Chapter 298: Chapter 240: Treasure-Grade Cultivation Technique, a Great Surge in Life Fire
Seeing He Chang’an’s eyes open, Xu Kai let out a sigh of relief, then waved his uninjured right hand in front of his face.
"Old He, how many is this?"
He Chang’an spat out a mouthful of bloody foam. "Cut the fucking crap. I’m not an idiot."
"Alright, looks like you’re fine!" Xu Kai was now completely at ease.
He Chang’an rolled over and sat up. He first glanced at the completely collapsed Jiaotai Hall beside them, then at the corpse Wu Liangchen had pulled out. A look of deep horror filled his face.
Then, he dropped to his knees and kowtowed several times to Wu Liangchen and Jiang Minghai.
"Thank you both for saving my life. I, He Chang’an, will engrave this kindness in my very soul. I am willing to serve you faithfully to repay this great debt."
Wu Liangchen smiled. "That won’t be necessary. Your injuries are quite severe. You should go back and rest for now."
He Chang’an tried to say something more, but Xu Kai forcibly dragged him away.
"Let’s go, let’s go! We need to find a place to tend to our wounds, quick! My arm is killing me!"
And so, He Chang’an and Xu Kai staggered off.
After they left, Wu Liangchen and Jiang Minghai glanced at each other, both seeing the strange look in the other’s eyes.
Jiang Minghai immediately sneered. "What a treacherous bastard. He was willing to put himself in mortal danger just for the sake of this act. He really spared no expense."
As it turned out, Jiang Minghai, with his vast experience in the martial world, had sensed something was amiss the moment they rescued He Chang’an.
The whole thing was just too coincidental.
How could it be that in such a massive explosion, this spot, by sheer coincidence, happened to be the only pocket of survival?
Furthermore, Jiang Minghai knew that his son-in-law and this He Chang’an had never gotten along. So why would He Chang’an save his son-in-law during a moment of crisis?
Don’t give me any nonsense about innate human goodness.
Old-timers like him didn’t believe in that sort of thing.
So, even without any concrete evidence, these points of suspicion were more than enough.
This wasn’t a formal investigation, after all. There was no need to adhere to rules of evidence.
Worried that Wu Liangchen’s lack of experience might lead him to be deceived, Jiang Minghai had discreetly warned him a moment ago. To his surprise, Wu Liangchen had also long since sensed something was wrong; he simply hadn’t said a word.
And He Chang’an’s behavior after waking up only served to confirm their suspicions.
His performance was just too much like an act.
From his disorientation upon waking to his terror upon seeing the ruins, it was all perfectly reasonable, utterly flawless.
But that, in itself, was his greatest flaw.
A normal person in this situation would be completely stunned, not nearly so clear-headed.
Wu Liangchen smiled as well. "He probably doesn’t realize he’s been exposed. So, for now, we’ll just watch. Then we’ll follow this thread and use him to find the rest of those East Sea spies who’ve snuck in."
"Haha, that’s exactly what I was thinking." As he spoke, Jiang Minghai clapped Wu Liangchen on the shoulder.
"My part here is done. I’ll head back first. Let me know if you need anything."
With that, Jiang Minghai leaped away.
Wu Liangchen, however, did not leave.
The Great Yan Imperial Palace was currently in a completely undefended state. The worldly treasures were one thing, but more importantly, the Martial God Temple still held a vast amount of cultivation resources. Wu Liangchen certainly wasn’t about to let those fall into someone else’s hands.
Fortunately, at that moment, the Ministry of Justice Office was the first to send men over.
The ones in the lead were a few familiar faces who had met Wu Liangchen before—subordinates of Xu Kai.
They had clearly heard the news and rushed over.
Upon seeing Wu Liangchen, the men immediately stood at attention. The one in the lead stepped forward and spoke with the utmost respect.
"Master Wu, all three hundred and sixteen constables from the Ministry of Justice Office are present and awaiting your command."
Wu Liangchen glanced at the men. Everywhere his gaze landed, the constables puffed out their chests and held their heads high, doing their utmost to project a spirited and capable appearance.
Seeing this, Wu Liangchen couldn’t help but smile and nod.
"Good. In that case, you will temporarily take charge of the palace’s security."
"Rest assured, Master Wu. We guarantee it will be airtight!" the leader immediately replied with a solemn expression.
While not a formal army, these constables were no ordinary men; they were all skilled fighters. Temporarily taking over the palace’s defense would be no problem for them.
Wu Liangchen first returned to the Martial God Temple. After packing up some of the most important and rare medicinal herbs and pills, he finally left the Imperial Palace.
And only after his figure had completely disappeared over the ornate rooftops, did a man appear in a large tree outside the palace—the same man who had been with Yan Jun.
But he no longer possessed his former debonair charm. His left arm was gone from the elbow down, and his once-handsome face was now covered in scars—a shocking sight.
He gazed in the direction Wu Liangchen had departed, his expression complex.
There was the bitterness of unfulfilled ambition and the sorrow of a long-held plan defeated by fate. But more than anything, there was despair.
The despair of facing an unbeatable foe.
Just then, another figure appeared on a branch behind him.
"You have failed," a cool female voice drifted over.
The man didn’t turn his head. He was silent for a long moment before sighing. "Yes. I have failed."
"I warned you not to be so fixated, but you refused to listen," the middle-aged woman said.
"’Not to be so fixated...’" the man murmured to himself, then gave a sudden, sorrowful laugh.
"Easy for you to say. But could I really stand by and watch the life’s work of generations be destroyed in my hands?"
