Going Ghost! (Young Justice)
Chapter 260 - 260: The Conclusion (1)
[Third Person Pov]
Danny and Ember sat in relative silence for several long seconds, both of them fidgeting with their fingers and avoiding direct eye contact. The quiet stretched until, almost at the same moment, they both decided to break it.
"I'm sorry—"
They spoke over each other, then immediately stumbled into awkward half-apologies before falling quiet again.
Ember was the first to recover. She shot him a dissatisfied look and grumbled, "Again—why are *you* the one apologizing? I'm the one who messed up. You have every right to be mad at me."
"You're right," Danny admitted. "I probably do. But being angry or upset doesn't give me an excuse to talk to you the way I did. I said things I didn't mean, and for that… I'm sorry." The shame in his expression was plain.
Ember's glare sharpened. "You're honestly pissing me off."
Danny blinked, bewildered. "Huh? What did I do? All I did was apologize."
"Exactly. That's the problem." She crossed her arms and slumped deeper into the couch. "It's irritating as hell listening to you apologize when *I'm* the one in the wrong. I was the one who didn't tell you the truth. I kept things from you. I deserve every name in the book for that. It would only be what I had coming."
Danny was quiet for a moment. Then he looked away, scratching the side of his cheek.
"If I'm being honest," he said slowly, "after I had time to think about it… I'm actually more flattered than upset. Yeah, your reasons for not telling me could be considered selfish. But that's only because you wanted to keep my attention for yourself."
"Stop. Stop. Oh my god—!!" Ember groaned, practically curling in on herself from embarrassment. "You're killing me here. You're making me sound desperate. I'm already mortified as it is!"
Danny chuckled as she tried to disappear behind the nearest couch cushion. "Relax. I'm not trying to embarrass you. I'm just saying I understand where you were coming from. If I had been in your position and been given the same chance… I don't think I would have chosen differently."
Ember slowly peeked out again, clutching a couch pillow tightly against her chest. She remained curled against the armrest, watching him with uncertain eyes.
"…Really?"
Danny nodded. "We're all willing to do stupid, crazy things for the people we care about. There's no controlling that. Look at what Sam did—it was dumb, no question. But in her own way, it was still an act of love."
Ember hugged the pillow closer and turned her face away, staring blankly into the middle distance.
Danny's voice softened.
"And… it worked. Because in the end, I did fall in love with you."
Ember's eyes widened. Clarity snapped back into them as she slowly turned to look at him, surprise written across her face.
"What did you just say?" she asked, as if she wasn't sure she had heard him correctly.
Now it was Danny's turn to look embarrassed. He rubbed the back of his neck, gaze dropping.
"I mean… is it really that surprising after how much time we spent together? It feels pretty natural to me."
Ember's expression shifted, suddenly wary. "You're not just pulling my leg, are you? Because if this is some kind of payback for what I did… that would be extremely cruel."
Danny looked genuinely offended. "Do you seriously think I would do something like that? Come on." His eyes drifted away from hers. "That's why it hurt so much when I found out you knew and kept it from me. That's why I said what I did. I felt betrayed by a girl I loved."
Color rose in Ember's cheeks. Danny shifted uncomfortably on the couch, clearly feeling the weight of what he had just admitted.
"…Okay," he muttered under his breath, a matching flush creeping across his own face. "This is more embarrassing than I thought."
Danny and Ember sat in the quiet for a few more seconds, both of them still processing the weight of what had just been said. Ember was the first to break the silence, pulling the pillow closer to her face so it half-hid the grin spreading across her mouth.
"So… my feelings are being reciprocated?" she asked, voice carefully controlled.
Inside her mind, a tiny version of herself was already punching the air and screaming in pure triumph.
She cleared her throat, shifted into a more composed position on the couch, and looked at him shyly. "Ahem. Then… what about Sam?"
Danny's discomfort returned immediately. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped tightly together.
"My feelings for Sam haven't changed," he admitted. "In fact… that's another reason I came here."
Ember stared at him in confusion. She sat back against the armrest with her knees drawn up, watching him expectantly.
Danny took a breath and began to explain everything—the same truths he had laid out for Sam and Tucker. He didn't hold anything back. Piece by piece, he laid out his conflicting feelings, the choice he believed was the only fair one, and the decision that none of them would get what they wanted.
It was raw and unguarded, a heart-to-heart that belonged only to the two of them.
By the time he finished, Ember's eyes were shining with unshed tears. She wiped them away quickly before Danny could fully notice.
Then her expression twisted.
"You really, *really* piss me off—do you know that?!" she burst out, frustration cracking through her voice.
Danny's gaze dropped to the floor, shame settling over him. "I'm sorry—"
"That isn't what I'm talking about!" Ember shouted. Her hair flared upward with the force of her emotions. "Okay—maybe that's part of it. How are you finally going to confess to me and then turn around and say we can't be together?! But that wasn't even what I meant!"
"Then what—?" Danny started, turning toward her in confusion.
He never got the chance to finish.
Ember launched herself at him, tackling him flat onto the couch. She landed astride him and started raining frustrated punches down against his arms and chest while he tried to shield himself.
"You. Stupid. Asshole!" she growled, voice rough with emotion.
"Hey—come on, stop it, please—" Danny caught her wrists before her fists could reach his face. "Ember!"
She finally relented. Her hands twisted into the fabric of his shirt instead, gripping tightly. Her head hung low, loose hair falling forward and hiding most of her expression. When she spoke again, her voice was hoarse.
"You bastard… you keep underestimating and downplaying my feelings for you."
Her body trembled slightly as she forced the words out through gritted teeth.
"Just who do you think you are, huh? You think that just because you tell me we can't be together, I'm going to roll over and accept it?"
She pressed one hand firmly over his heart.
"I keep telling you I don't mind waiting. I think we've already established that my feelings aren't so flimsy that I'll just go along with whatever you decide."
She leaned down until her hair curtained around them both. Her eyes burned with the same fierce fire as her hair as she jabbed a finger against his chest.
"You told me you loved me, yeah? That means I already have a place in your heart. Which means I've already made progress. You think I'm just going to stop after coming this far?"
Before he could answer, Ember grabbed his face and kissed him—firm, deliberate, and full of conviction. Danny's eyes flew wide open in pure surprise.
When she pulled back, one hand remained on his chest while the other covered her mouth. She licked her lips once, looking thoroughly satisfied.
"I already decided you're going to be mine," she declared, voice steady and adamant. "I won't stop until I have the entirety of your heart… even if I have to keep playing unfair. Are we clear?"
It wasn't a request.
It wasn't even a promise.
It was a declaration of war.
Danny lay beneath her with the back of one hand pressed over his mouth, part of his hair fallen across his face. He turned his head away, clearly flustered, a deep flush rising across his cheeks.
Ember sat up a little straighter, chest rising with a smug huff. In her mind, the outcome was already decided. Everyone else was simply taking longer to accept it.
