Chapter 1047: Chapter 44: I Only Want My Brother

Go Biqing couldn’t imagine where the young Gwen learned these words, so he asked, "Where did you hear about a sister-in-law, who told you? Looks like I need to talk to your mom about this."

"Please don’t, brother, my good brother, I saw it on TV. If you tell mom, she’ll hit my palms again, and it really hurts," Gwen pleaded.

"I’ll let it slide this time, but no more watching those random TV shows. Otherwise, be careful that brother won’t be nice to you in the future. Nobody likes naughty kids," Go Biqing said seriously.

Now that Gwen no longer had a father, she only had her brother and mother, so they meant the most to her. Hearing Go Biqing’s stern words, she nodded immediately without a hint of hesitation.

"And, don’t say those things in front of outsiders, alright? This way, that sister will be laughed at, and your brother too. You don’t want your brother to be mocked, do you?" Go Biqing felt his earlier words might have been too harsh, so he crouched down and spoke gently.

Gwen nodded somewhat understandingly, and Go Biqing didn’t say much more, knowing she couldn’t fully grasp it anyway.

The siblings continued to stroll and chat, resting on a bench when tired. Seeing his sister sweat made Go Biqing feel uncomfortable. Back when they had money, they stayed in air-conditioned rooms and had a car, it was great then. Now watching his sister endure alongside him, Go Biqing noticed she didn’t mind at all; she was just happy to be with her brother.

"It’s getting late, almost five o’clock. We should head home. I’ll call your mom to pick you up. I don’t feel comfortable letting you go home alone," Go Biqing told Gwen.

Gwen obviously didn’t feel like going home so soon. Now, Sun Yan, like Go Biqing’s father before, was very busy with work, rarely having time to spend with Gwen. Going back to a home with only a nanny seemed less joyful to Gwen than being in her brother’s small apartment. A child’s thoughts are often that simple.

After the call, the two of them walked slowly toward the school gate, waiting briefly before seeing Sun Yan come to pick up Gwen in her car.

Not until Gwen got in the car did Go Biqing feel completely relieved, even reminding her not to run off like this anymore.

Without thinking much, Go Biqing went straight home. Today, he specifically bought a newspaper to look for a job. His current predicament forced him to act quickly; otherwise, he might starve at home, which was not the outcome Go Biqing wanted.

Back at home, Gwen had just entered her room when Sun Yan called her out. Seeing Sun Yan frowning, Gwen felt a slight shiver in her heart.

"Come here, who gave you the guts to run off to see your brother without telling anyone at home?" Sun Yan said sternly.

Gwen no longer had the excitement and cuteness from the afternoon with her brother, instead, she looked weakly at her mother, not daring to say a word.

Suddenly, Sun Yan said, "In the future, don’t run off to your brother’s place. Just stay home obediently; we have everything at home—drinks, snacks, TV. There’s not even a fan at his place."

Hearing her mother’s tone wasn’t good, Gwen, usually quiet, felt an inexplicable unhappiness surge when she heard her mother forbid her from going to her brother’s home. To her, playing with her brother and being close to him was perfectly normal, but her mother opposed it for no reason, so how could she be willing?

"No, he’s my brother. I don’t want drinks, snacks; I don’t want anything, just my brother," Gwen said stubbornly.

Sun Yan was surprised by Gwen’s direct defiance, a first. Angry, she took out a ruler and said, "Talking back now, huh? Put your hand out, open it."

Despite expressing her stance, Gwen still obeyed Sun Yan’s words, extending her hand. After Sun Yan fiercely hit it several times, she asked, "Will you go find your brother again, tell me."

In Gwen’s eyes, she hadn’t done anything wrong. Naturally upset by the beating, she didn’t want to give in, especially for her brother whom she adored. She immediately said, "No, I’m going to see him. He’s my brother."

Sun Yan couldn’t believe that her reliable ruler, which always scared Gwen, was ineffective even after several strikes. Furious, she struck Gwen’s palm again until it reddened, then asked, "Well? Still going?"

Gwen was tough, but the pain was beyond what a child could bear, tears streaming down her face.

"No, I’m going to see him. I’m going to see him. I hate you," Gwen shouted at her mother for the first time.

She then ran to her room, threw herself on the bed, and cried loudly.

At this moment, Sun Yan looked at the ruler in her hand, feeling indescribable emotions, and suddenly tears started flowing.

Thinking of her unmarried pregnancy, the judgment from others, her persistence in raising Gwen—who could she share her stress and hardships with?

Earlier, Go Biqing had suggested that Gwen could live at his home, but his father refused. If his daughter lived at home, what would that say about the mother living outside? Go Biqing also strongly opposed Sun Yan living with them.

Today, Sun Yan’s severe punishment of Gwen might well reflect her resentment for Go Biqing’s past hurtful behavior. She was only human; despite her many attempts to mend fences with Go Biqing, she’d only received sarcasm and coldness, even being verbally abused—how could she not harbor some bitterness inside?

After crying, Sun Yan sat dazed on the sofa; past issues now seemed trivial. As she gradually calmed down, she felt remorse for her actions toward her daughter. Despite Go Biqing’s cold demeanor toward her, he’s always been wonderful to Gwen, even willing to get her the stars. Moreover, their previous conflicts had been due to the marriage dispute involving Go Biqing’s father, who had since passed away, leaving no reason for continued animosity. Sun Yan didn’t want their relationship too strained, as it would be tough for Gwen caught in between. Sun Yan also harbored a secret unmentioned to Go Biqing, which had subtly eased their relationship over the past six months.
