Chapter 1040 - 37: Visiting Grandmother Kang
Chapter 1040: Chapter 37: Visiting Grandmother Kang
Pei Pei accompanied Kang Sir to visit Grandma Kang.
Once they entered the Kang Family mansion, Grandma Kang, supported by her caregiver, was taking a walk in the garden.
Nobody knew which servant had set her off, but Grandma Kang was in the middle of a temper tantrum.
The servant tried to soothe her, "Madam, getting so worked up isn’t good for your health. If Young Master finds out... he’ll feel terrible."
"Hmph!"
Grandma Kang snorted, "Feel terrible my ass! If he really cared, he wouldn’t be out fooling around, driving such a perfectly good girl away!"
The Kang Family was a well-known clan in the Holy City.
In fact, part of the reason Kang Sir and Pei Pei got together was because of Grandma Kang.
Who didn’t know that Grandma Kang had been a famed opera performer in her youth?
So in the Kang Family, anyone who casually tossed around the word "actress" as an insult was basically asking for trouble.
Grandma Kang was genuinely pleased with Pei Pei. What was wrong with being a young leading lady on stage? A girl who could stay clean in this line of work—that was truly remarkable.
Purity without temptations, versus purity kept after facing countless temptations—which one has more value?
Only someone Grandma Kang’s age, who’d weathered so many storms, could truly understand that.
The servant coaxed her, "Madam, please calm down..."
"That brat." Grandma Kang just couldn’t calm down; she muttered even more, "He might as well not come back to see me at all!"
Just as she said that, Kang Sir and Pei Pei came over.
Kang Sir glanced at Pei Pei. "I’m counting on you. Grandma’s mouth... hasn’t stopped talking about you."
"..." Pei Pei pressed her lips together and smiled. "Okay."
"Grandma!"
Kang Sir called out loudly, grinning as he pulled Pei Pei over.
Hearing his voice, Grandma Kang lifted her head. When she saw Kang Sir, she was clearly displeased. "You little—"
But then she saw Pei Pei.
Her expression changed in an instant, turning into delighted surprise.
"Oh my, who’s this? Which family’s young lady, looking so fresh and pretty?"
"Hehe." Pei Pei giggled, walked over, squatted down beside Grandma Kang, and took her hand. "Grandma, long time no see."
"Mm..."
Grandma Kang deliberately put on a stern face. "You little girl, why have you taken so long to come visit me?"
"I..." Pei Pei smiled. "Haven’t I been busy lately? I can barely keep up with all the jobs lined up."
"Ai." Grandma Kang patted her hand lightly and sighed.
"You don’t have to hide it from me. I know... it’s this brat Sir who made you sad!"
As she spoke, she glared at Kang Sir. "You brat! With such a good girlfriend, why aren’t you satisfied?"
Kang Sir’s mouth twitched. "Yes, yes, Grandma, you’re right... anyway it’s all my fault."
"Do you really know you were wrong?" Grandma Kang frowned. "If you truly know you were wrong, then today, in front of Peipei, you tell her... from now on you won’t fool around anymore, you’ll only be devoted to her."
Pei Pei and Kang Sir both fell silent.
Grandma Kang grew unhappy, assuming the two of them still had issues.
Even if her grandson had brought Pei Pei back, what girl wouldn’t mind her boyfriend cheating?
"Brat, is it that you don’t want to make a statement, or that you can’t? Are you trying to piss me off to death?"
"No..."
Kang Sir hurriedly shook his head and looked at Pei Pei. "I’m willing. I’ll say it—"
His eyes burned, his attitude extremely serious, not joking in the slightest.
"Peipei." Kang Sir’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "I promise you, there will never be anyone else from now on... in this life, I’ll only be good to you. If I ever have anyone else again, may heaven punish me... with a lifetime of lonely—"
"Ah—"
Pei Pei was startled. She jumped up and quickly clapped a hand over his mouth.
He absolutely could not swear something like that.
Even though neither of them were superstitious, wasn’t there that saying about "what you say comes true"?
She had already wronged Kang Sir; how could she let him swear that kind of oath?
Kang Sir stared at her. "Peipei?"
"Uh..." Pei Pei gave an awkward smile. "I believe you, I believe you—that’s enough. No need to swear."
On the side, Grandma Kang watched and laughed. "Hahaha... that’s good, that’s good."
In high spirits, the old lady immediately called for the servants.
"Someone come, tell the kitchen to make two extra dishes... tonight, I want to have a good long chat with Peipei."
Pei Pei pressed her lips and smiled lightly. "Mm."
That evening, the dining room finally felt lively again.
Seeing his grandmother chatting and joking, Kang Sir felt much lighter at heart.
"Young Master."
The butler walked up behind Kang Sir. "At the door, Miss Pei Pei’s family has arrived."
"Hm?"
Kang Sir was a little surprised. "What family?"
"Well..." The butler lowered his voice even more. "It’s Miss Pei Pei’s younger brother."
Oh.
Kang Sir nodded, glanced at Pei Pei, who was keeping Grandma company, and more or less understood.
"I’ll go take a look. Don’t tell Pei Pei about this."
"Yes, sir."
Kang Sir rose, made an excuse about going to the bathroom, and went out.
By the side door, Pei Pei’s younger brother Pei Jun was standing there, chewing gum, looking all slouchy and careless.
Kang Sir looked at him and frowned despite himself.
They say even princes have three poor relatives, and Pei Pei’s brother... was truly headache-inducing. No matter how many times, no matter how much money, it was never enough. He was a bottomless pit, a complete vampire squeezing Pei Pei dry!
As the door opened, Pei Jun immediately sprang up. When he saw Kang Sir, his eyes lit up.
"President Kang."
Kang Sir’s mouth tugged into a slight smile. "Mm."
Pei Jun was embarrassed to speak too bluntly, craned his neck to glance inside. "Where’s my sister? I asked her agent, they said President Kang picked her up... so I figured my sis must be here. Well, President Kang, I hate to bother you, but I want to see my sister."
Tch...
Kang Sir let out a cold laugh and shook his head.
"Your sister’s not feeling too well. I don’t want her out in the wind. Whatever it is, telling me is the same thing."
The same?
Pei Jun instantly broke into a broad grin. "Exactly, exactly, what’s the relationship between President Kang and my sister, right? President Kang, when will I get to call you brother-in-law?"
Brother-in-law?
Kang Sir raised a brow and shook his head, too lazy to chatter with him. "Go on, how much do you need?"
"Ah?" The moment Pei Jun heard that, his grin widened. "You’re... way too straightforward!"
Kang Sir smiled, took out his checkbook. "Give me a number."
"Not much." Pei Jun stuck out his hand, showing two fingers.
Kang Sir slanted him a look, filled out the check, tore it off, and handed it over. "Take it. Your sister’s really tired lately. Don’t bother her if you don’t have to."
"Oh! Sure!"
Pei Jun took the check, beaming from ear to ear.
"Got it! Thanks, brother-in-law! You’re really good to my sister!"
Heh...
Kang Sir gave a small smile and turned back inside.
In the living room, Pei Pei was accompanying Grandma Kang as they watched opera DVDs.
Pei Pei sat quietly beside her, peeling apples for Grandma Kang to eat.
Watching this, Kang Sir felt a warm glow in his chest...
He didn’t want to pressure Pei Pei, but if things really didn’t work out between her and Lu Yuxuan, then Pei Pei would have to get married someday, wouldn’t she? Marrying him wasn’t exactly impossible.
