God of Adaptation
Chapter 135: Meeting the Constable
Tukutuk— Tukutuk—
A white luxurious carriage bearing the emblem of the Gladius Family moved leisurely.
It was currently heading on the tallest building in all of the Corelli Fortress: the abode of the constable of the fortress.
"Are you okay, Brother?"
Pandora asked, only to be met with Regus’s silence.
Seeing this, she leaned back and sighed.
Killian also had a frown on his face as he witnessed this, "Just what happened to him..."
He remembered that since they left the Alchemy Hall, Regis had become quiet as if there was too much on his mind.
His unresponsiveness also worried him and Pandora to a certain extent since he doesn’t seem to hear them.
"It’s going to be a problem if the constable takes offense because of this..."
Hearing Killian’s mutter, Pandora tilted her head and asked, "Why is that so?"
"Well, I haven’t really directly interacted with the constable. So like you two, I don’t really know how he is in person."
Killian’s expression took a turn for the worse when he spoke again after a moment, "However, my dad had always complained when he had a meeting with a constable..."
At this moment, Regis seemed to have a little bit of reaction.
"Brother? Are you okay now?" Pandora had a worried expression on her face as she tried waving her hand in front of his eyes.
Killian also took this opportunity to grab his shoulders and shake him up. "Regis? Regis? Regis!!!"
"I’m sorry, I’m thinking about something..."
To their surprise, Regis seemed to snap out of his hour-long daze as he looked at them.
"It’s obvious, what the hell happened to you back there?"
Killian asked as he looked Regis in the eye.
"Well, I don’t really know how to explain it through words, but..."
Regis sighed as he massaged his forehead before speaking, "Let’s just say that what Sir Wagner told us made me a little nervous..."
"Oh? The one about the findings they got through the chimera corpse?"
Killian said as he looked at him with wide eyes.
Regis nodded, "Yes..."
Pandora kept silent and just listened attentively while looking at him with a worried face.
Regis noticed this and chuckled, "Why do you look like you’re holding in a fart? You can relax now, I just got a little carried away earlier."
"Wha–" Pandora utterly felt shocked as she heard his words.
"Hahahaha!!!"
Meanwhile, Killian had a fit of laughter to the point that his eyes became teary.
"Tsk."
However, a glare from Pandora was all it took for him to abruptly stop laughing.
"Ehem. Ehem. Where were we?"
A serious expression appeared on Killian’s face as he spoke, "As I have said earlier, my dad had told me stories about how unreasonable the constable was..."
Seeing him smoothly move on like he wasn’t dying out of laughter earlier, Regis couldn’t help but let out a chuckle.
"Hmph."
Noticing Pandora’s pout from the corner of his eye, Regis’s chuckle turned into an awkward laugh as he scratched his cheek.
’I was only trying to loosen the mood... Did I go overboard?"
Since he heard about the situation from the Alchemy Hall President, he couldn’t help but think of various possibilities.
However, the thing that made him the most worried was his origin itself.
The earliest memory he could remember was when he was stealing moldy bread from a certain stall.
Therefore, he couldn’t help but feel some bad premonition due to the accuracy of the findings to his gift of Perfect Adaptation.
It didn’t take long before they arrived in front of the largest building in the whole fortress.
A few minutes after they got off the carriage, a guard immediately came up and respectfully escorted them inside the building.
What greeted Regis, Pandora, and Killian’s sight was a massive hall with a red carpet on the center which led up to a throne.
Sitting on the throne was a fat man with an unkempt beard, wearing a dark red cloak with white fur.
Although he didn’t have a crown on his head, the badge on the uniform he was wearing was a testament of his position as a commander of the army.
In the Acheron Kingdom, the people who led the fortresses did not need to be part of a noble family.
Instead, they needed to acquire achievements in commanding and leading the army of the kingdom through wars.
This was also the reason why Count Orpheus still needed to stealthily go on with his plan.
Killian had also filled Regis and Pandora up with the information along with his stories regarding the constable.
"Constable Gerold, the young adventurers who greatly contributed to the research of the Temple of Light and the Alchemy Hall.
"Hmmm?"
The fat man lazily raised his head and squinted his eyes as he looked at the three children before him.
"Oh! It’s you!! I really wanted to thank you because of how you became the cause of the breakthrough in the research of the Alchemy Hall and the Temple of Light!"
Regis couldn’t help but frown as he sensed something amiss in the constable’s tone.
’It’s like he’s reading from a script...’
His eyes wandered over some of the officials who were standing at the side.
Some of them were wearing armors while some were only wearing uniforms with badges that was proof of them being of a commander position in the army.
Among them, an elderly man with snake-like eyes and glasses seemed a little suspicious as Regis observed them.
’Well, I don’t mean to discriminate because of his looks, but... he really does seem suspicious.’
Killian was the one to take a step forward and respond as he bowed gracefully, "It is to our utmost pleasure that we were able to be of help to the fortress as a whole."
"Oho?" Constable Gerold’s eyebrows rose in intrigue as he heard the boy’s eloquent words.
He clumsily straightened his sitting posture before speaking, "Well, what do you want as a reward? I hope I can at least aid your growth."
Knowing that it would be more efficient if Killian was the one to converse with the constable, Regis kept silent and bowed his head silently.
’Since Killian is a noble, he must have more knowledge in conversing with other nobles...’
Killian instantly understood the meaning behind Regis’s simple gesture as he raised his head and spoke, "Just the mere fact that you have called us here and graced us with your presence is a precious reward in itself."
"We also believe that the Adventurer Guild’s reward is already sufficient for all of us. That is why we have no desire as we are already satisfied with what the fortress graced us with."
He did not stutter even once as he bulshitted his way into making Constable Gerold’s lips curl into a slight smile.
’What the hell!?’
Meanwhile, Regis and Pandora couldn’t help but curse internally as they witnessed Killian’s eloquent speech.
Fortunately, both of their heads were lowered, making it so that no one could see the shock that filled their eyes.
"I can see that the future of the Acheron Kingdom is indeed bright!"
Constable Gerold clapped his hands twice before chuckling, "You three are really outstanding adventurers! Still, this is more of a reason to reward you– think of it as an investment from the fortress."
"Oh, before I forget, may I ask for your names? I can’t believe that it took me this long to ask for it, please pardon me..."
He had an apologetic expression on his face as he posed a question.
Killian smiled, "Then, let me have the pleasure of introducing ourselves to Your Honor. My name is Killian Gladius, the successor and the sole descendant of the Gladius Family."
He then pointed to his left where a black haired girl could be seen, "On my left is my friend, Pandora, who recently came to the fortress with her brother. She is an outstanding mage."
"Finally, to my right: the leader of our party." Killian’s voice deepened a little as he pointed his hand towards Regis.
"This is Regis, the brother of Pandora. He is an outstanding swordsman, even better than me."
"Oho?" The interest in Constable Gerold’s eyes deepened, "For you, a member of the Gladius Family who prided themselves in their swordsmanship, to praise another swordsman outside of your lineage..."
Killian’s smile also widened, "Well, if it weren’t for that fact, I would have been the leader of our party instead of him, Your Honor."
"Hahaha! Interesting!!" Constable Gerold laughed, seemingly amused by Killian’s words.
Meanwhile, Regis and Pandora could not quite put their fingers on what Killian was planning as of this moment.
’Wait... Is he really bragging?’ Pandora thought as she prevented herself from shouting at him.
Regis glanced at Killian, ’He must be planning something for sure... Though I don’t know what it is so I’ll just ask him later...’
At this moment, Constable Gerold recovered his calm as he clapped once, "Haha, what an amusing lad... Well, I believe that I have the most suitable rewards for the three of you."
As his clap sounded, three knights holding something in each of their hands entered the hall.
