God of Adaptation

Chapter 123: Pondering

  • Next Chapter

In a luxurious bedroom...

Regis laid silently in the bed as his eyes wandered around.

’This place is really nice...’

He thought as he remembered how Killian just told them to choose their own bedrooms.

When he and Pandora visited the rooms earlier, they were both shocked at the grandness of every room in the mansion.

What’s more, Killian also didn’t seem to care whatever they chose.

After he moved to the bedroom of the late count, he told them to do whatever they wanted.

Thus, after some thinking, they chose the two bedrooms that were relatively near Killian’s.

’To think that there really is a house like this...’ Regis couldn’t help but feel surreal at his current situation.

As someone who was born and grew up from the slums, this was not something he could even dream about.

The pungent smell, the garbage that littered the streets and the loud alleys that were filled with people who had no hope in life.

Those were the things that he had lived with in all ten years of his life.

Now met with the luxury living environment also known as the Gladius Mansion, he couldn’t help but feel touched.

Although he had also visited the Orpheus Mansion, he didn’t have the time to "feel" the luxury since he was sent straight into the dungeon.

It was only now that he could appreciate the luxury of living in a mansion.

’Hmm, to think that I would go straight from living in the slums to living in a mansion, I still can’t quite believe it.’

Regis let out a soft chuckle as he thought about how drastic the change in his living environment was.

As his eyes darted around the room, he began to appreciate its beauty.

The room had a big window that overlooked the beautiful garden at the backyard, the moonlight also softly casted its illumination through the glass panes of the window.

The floral curtains were neatly tied on both of the sides, emitting an aura of elegance.

Large cabinets, study tables with drawers, lamps, writing tools and even a notebook, a shelf that was filled with books, a chandelier that could provide bright illumination, a high quality carpet that was soft to walk on...

Everything seemed to already be in the room, making Regis feel surreal all over again.

’Even these clothes are smooth and shiny...’

Looking at the pajamas that Killian had introduced to them, he felt even more comfortable as he caressed it.

"Haa... I can’t believe that clothes like this exist in this world..." Regis sighed as he stared at the white ceiling above.

However, his thoughts suddenly took a turn as he remembered what happened back in their fight against the possessed Harold.

He sat back up as he began to ponder, "I wonder what happened to my gift..."

Regis couldn’t really point the problem out since it was the first time that it happened.

’I knew that something was off since the color of my gift didn’t match the colors of gifts that I have known so far...’

As he continued pondering, he was beginning to think that maybe his unique gift really wasn’t that good.

"Just what the hell happened... Oh, now that I remember, I also haven’t heard from Vanessa since the establishment of the contract..."

Regis initially found it weird since he clearly indicated that he would share the nutrients of his body that she needed.

When he stated that, he was expecting to feel some weakness.

After all, he would be sharing the nutrients of his body which would inevitably lead to him giving up some of the strength he had.

Other than that, the clause that ’he would provide the needed nutrients’ would mean that he would also share some of the strength of his soul.

Although Regis didn’t even know how to manipulate his soul, the soul contract would be the one to take care of that.

Pat—

Dropping his upper body back into the soft bed, he began to toss around.

He was racking his brain seriously while at the same time, enjoying the softness of the bed and the blanket.

Still, no matter how hard he tossed around in the last hour, he couldn’t tell what the problem in his Perfect Adaptation was.

"Why did it not activate..."

"Why hasn’t Vanessa contacted me yet...?"

The two problems alternated in his mind, as if wanting to drive him crazy.

Just as he was about to give up, something suddenly happened which made his eyes go wide in extreme shock.

"W-What— H-How— W-Why!?"

Regis stuttered as he sat back up again, he couldn’t believe it.

A familiar feeling that he had been waiting for since the battle had just assaulted his body.

However, his expression soon became strange, "Why did my Perfect Adaptation activate now of all times?"

That’s right. What he felt was the feeling of his gift’s activation.

Unbeknownst to him, it didn’t end there.

WUNG—

A soft hum could be heard as his body suddenly emitted a glow.

Following this, a special feeling once again spread out through his whole being and made him feel refreshed.

A refreshing feeling that seemed to have stemmed from deep within his soul.

"What the hell happened?"

Regis muttered beneath his breath as he looked at his glowing hands.

’I can feel it...’

Currently, he felt as if he had become aware of everything in his surroundings.

It was as if everything had suddenly become "clearer" in his perspective, like his peripheral vision suddenly expanded to the back of his head.

He couldn’t quite describe it, but he felt like his "instinct" had become stronger.

At this moment, his curiosity got the best of him as he hurriedly meditated in order to sense his body.

’I need to learn what caused this...!’

Regis thought as he closed his eyes and began to scan his insides.

’Wait... is what I’m feeling true?’

Right now, he felt as if his organs had become even more active. His heart seemed to beat harder, while his blood flow looked to be faster.

He couldn’t quite explain it, but he could "feel" that his body had improved drastically.

’Okay...’

Regis sighed as he entered his consciousness.

Tap— Tap—

’Huh?’

The sound of him stepping over shallow waters echoed softly.

Opening his eyes, Regis felt shocked.

"What the hell..."

What greeted his sight was a bright blue sky with three suns.

There were also clouds that seemed to be moving slightly every second, showcasing the lifelikeness that should have only been seen in the outside world.

The ground seemed to be an endless ocean that stretched over to the horizon, reflecting the sky above not unlike a mirror.

What’s stranger was the fact that when Regis stepped on the "ocean" he felt that it was hard just like the ground.

"Why did my consciousness become like this...?" Regis muttered to himself with a blank expression.

If not for the fact that he could feel the familiarity of this place, he would not even believe that he was in his own consciousness.

From what he remembered, the last time he entered his consciousness was when he formed the contract with Vanessa.

At this moment, a thought struck him, ’Could it be that...’

Then, his consciousness, which had just been a blank space where he could see his gifts and the souls of the other demonic children, had suddenly become like this...

... he used the word "this" since he didn’t know how to describe the "world" he was in right now.

"Finally, you have paid us a visit..."

Regis suddenly heard a familiar voice, prompting him to turn his head.

"Wait... Vanessa?"

What greeted his sight was Vanessa who seemed healthier than ever.

"Yes..."

Vanessa affirmed, though she also had a complicated expression on her face.

"What happened here?" Regis asked, which made Vanessa chuckle softly, "Straight to the point, huh?"

"Come on, I really have a lot of things going on in my mind right now so can you please kindly cooperate..."

"Hmmm..." Vanessa began to ponder for a moment as she saw his serious face.

"To be frank, I don’t know."

"What?"

Regis felt dumbfounded at her answer.

"What do you mean?"

"It’s just what I said. In fact, I should be the one to ask you about what happened."

Vanessa pointed above, "I want to know what’s up with those gifts of yours."

"Ehh?" Regis was confused.

Seeing his reaction, she sighed, "Before everything became like this, one of your gifts suddenly emitted a bright light and made the space crack."

"What!?" Not believing what he heard, Regis gasped audibly.

Vanessa then started to narrate to him what happened from the start when his gift of Perfect Adaptation suddenly wreaked havoc all over his consciousness.

Regis began to listen carefully, focusing all of his attention towards her.

As she finished speaking, his expression had now become like that of someone who just learned how to turn a pebble into gold.

"Wait..."

’Does this mean that the reason why my Perfect Adaptation didn’t work was because it was working!?’

Regis felt dizzy at the conclusion he just came up with.
