Chapter 82: Sword Art: Severance Of Heaven
"The sword art I have called Severance of Heaven." Rishin sat with his own blade across his knees for the first time since Logan had arrived, a plain, unadorned thing that looked like it had seen centuries of use. "Its whole philosophy comes down to one idea. Everything that exists is connected. The sword exists to decide what remains connected."
"A sword doesn’t just cut flesh." He held up one finger, then another, counting them off slow. "It cuts momentum. Balance. Distance. Weapons. Spells. Formations. Intentions. Given enough mastery and achieving a higher realm, it eventually cuts concepts themselves."
"Every time you face an opponent, ask yourself one question first. What is holding them together? Then cut that."
Logan turned the words over in his own head, feeling the shape of something enormous sitting underneath such a simple sentence.
"If this sword is about severing everything, and I have Omni-Penetration, then if I can perceive the connection, then I should be able to penetrate through them right?"
Elder Rishin shook his head. "True, but wrong. Don’t get confused. Penetration is different than severance. However, you are right that they can complement each other. Your class will greatly compliment this sword art, so let’s begin."
"First technique. Severed Step." Rishin rose, blade still loose in one hand. "A cut aimed at an opponent’s footing. Not their leg. Their footing. The connection between them and their next move. Between them, and the ground. Between them, and whatever they use for their footing."
He moved, and Logan’s own stance simply stopped working, both feet suddenly disconnected from whatever balance they’d been standing on a half second earlier, dropping him hard onto the stone without a single visible strike ever actually reaching him.
Logan spent the next several hours trying to find that same cut, now that he could actually perceive the Intent riding underneath every one of Rishin’s movements. His first dozen attempts did nothing at all, blade cutting empty air with no more effect than any ordinary swing. The thirteenth caught something, barely, a faint shudder running through Rishin’s own stance for less than a heartbeat before it settled again.
"There." Rishin’s tone didn’t change, but he said it anyway. "That’s the shape of it. Keep going."
It came slow, clumsy, nothing close to what he’d just witnessed. But slow was still forward.
"Second technique. Broken Chain." Rishin’s own blade flicked once, and the weapon Logan hadn’t even realized he’d drawn again went spinning out of his own grip before he registered losing it. "This one targets the bond between weapon and wielder instead. Disarming, in its purest form."
Logan tried it back on him a dozen times over and never once managed to loosen so much as a finger on Rishin’s own grip. Each failure taught him something about the shape of the technique anyway, even if his body still refused to reproduce it properly.
By the time the second day’s light started fading, Logan had managed one clean execution of Severed Step, and nothing yet resembling Broken Chain beyond understanding what it was supposed to feel like.
"Adequate." Rishin said it without much inflection either way. "Tomorrow, the harder ones."
---
The third day started the same way the others had, except this time Rishin didn’t bother easing into it.
"Third technique. Heaven-Splitting Line." He raised his blade, and a wave of pure cutting force tore free of it in a long, flat arc, crossing thirty meters of open air before it struck a boulder sitting at the pond’s far edge and split it clean in two. "A long-range wave, built to cut through magical barriers and defensive formations both. Distance means nothing to it."
"Fourth technique. Thread of Fate." Rishin’s tone shifted just slightly, something almost like genuine respect for the technique itself creeping in. "The hardest of the four before the last. You identify your opponent’s next movement before it happens, and you cut the exact point where their intention becomes action."
Logan’s own understanding of Sword Intent, still barely a day old, strained just trying to hold the idea properly in his head. Reading an intention was one thing. Cutting the exact moment it turned real was something else entirely.
"And the fifth." Rishin’s voice dropped, quiet in a way that made the whole clearing feel like it was listening. "Severance of Heaven. The technique this whole art is named for."
"A single cut. For one instant, everything along that line stops being connected at all. Armor, separated from flesh. Magic, separated from the one casting it. Weapon, separated from the hand holding it. Attack, separated from its own momentum." He paused. "Given enough mastery, even space itself can be severed."
Logan didn’t say anything for a long moment. There wasn’t really anything to say to something like that.
"You won’t master this one. Not in three days. Not in three years, most likely." Rishin said it without any cruelty in it at all, just fact. "But you’ll understand the shape of it. That’s enough, for now. The rest is yours to earn on your own time."
The rest of the third day passed in the same grinding rhythm as the two before it, Logan throwing himself at every technique Rishin had shown him, failing more than he succeeded, refusing to stop anyway.
He tried Heaven-Splitting Line a dozen times and managed only a thin ripple of force each time, nothing close to the boulder-splitting wave Rishin had summoned so easily. He tried Thread of Fate and found himself half a beat too slow every single attempt, always reacting to a movement that had already finished instead of catching it at the moment it began. Even Severed Step, the one technique he’d actually landed the day before, slipped away from him twice under the added weight of trying to hold four separate ideas in his head at once.
Rishin corrected him through all of it in the same flat, unhurried voice, never once raising it, never once softening it either.
When the last light finally faded off the mountain, Rishin looked him over once, something unreadable settling behind his usual calm.
"Severed Step, you can use, if imperfectly. Broken Chain, you understand well enough to attempt. The rest will take you months, at least. Maybe longer." He rose to his feet. "But you awakened Sword Intent in under a day, and you haven’t stopped moving in three, even after your own body gave out on you once already."
"That’s not talent." Rishin’s eyes settled on him, steady. "That’s something rarer. You’ll have my sword art in full. Sit down, I’ll relay it fully to you."
Logan’s chest tightened, three days of pain and exhaustion suddenly worth every second of it with pride and relief tangled together.
"Thank you." It came out rougher than he meant it to. "I won’t waste it."
