Global PvP Tower: I Can Infinitely Merge My Units
Chapter 130: Rematch (1)
They sailed north the next time the tide allowed it, and nobody on either ship said very much on the way.
Logan spent the crossing not sharpening anything, because there was nothing left to sharpen. Alice spent it sitting on the rail with the Skyrend Sinew Bowstring across her knees, not drawing it.
The island came up over the horizon exactly where Vaerith Solmane had said it would.
It was exactly what Nyriel had always said it was.
Bare rock. Maybe six hundred meters across, flat and grey, with a shallow rise in the middle and nothing growing on any of it.
No walls. No structures. No units.
```
[ Northern island. No signatures detected. ]
```
"It is still saying empty," Alice said.
"It is right." Logan stepped off the ship onto stone that had never been built on. "There is nothing here."
Except that there were two people standing on the rise, and had been since before the ship came over the horizon, and the constellation above the mast was not registering either of them.
---
Logan brought everything.
Thirty-seven Mythic-plus combat units came off the ships behind him and spread across the rock in a line four hundred meters wide. Billy went up. Solveig took the right. Sonic did not bother landing at all.
Xairon came ashore with three siege pieces it had built during the crossing and set them without being told where.
Against that, Vaerith Solmane had a sword and Ilyra Tanthess had a folding stool.
She had actually brought a stool. She unfolded it, sat down on it, and put her hands in her lap.
"Thirty-seven," Vaerith called across the rock. "I told her forty."
"Thirty-seven," Ilyra agreed. "You owe me nothing. I said between thirty-five and forty."
"That is not a prediction, that is a range."
"All predictions are ranges. You simply prefer the ones that sound like sentences."
---
"Nyriel cannot see you," Logan said.
"Nyriel can see me perfectly." Ilyra did not look up. "It measures energy output against a detection floor. I know where the floor is and I stay under it. That is the entire trick and it is not a very good one."
"You have been doing that all match."
"I have been doing that since the first hour of the first match I ever played." She finally raised her eyes. "Scanners do not find people. They find people who are not paying attention."
’She is not hiding.’ Logan felt something cold settle. ’She is being quiet on purpose, without stopping, for an entire match. That is not a skill. That is a discipline.’
"You brought no units," Alice said.
"We have no units." Vaerith drew and the sound of it carried. "We never took any. Tower Points went into gear and consumables and nothing else. Ilyra worked out early that an army is a liability against us."
"A liability."
"More inputs," Ilyra said. "That is all an army is. And inputs are what I am for."
---
Logan sent them anyway, because the alternative was taking her word for it.
Thirty-seven Mythic-plus units crossed four hundred meters of open rock in under eight seconds, and Billy came down from above at the same moment, and Solveig hit the rise from the right with gold burning at the edges of his armor.
Nothing landed.
Not one strike. Not a graze.
Vaerith Solmane moved through it the way a man walks through a doorway, and every movement he made was small.
He did not parry anything. He did not block anything. He was simply never quite where the strike was going, and never more than a handspan out of the way.
Ilyra had not stood up.
She was talking, quietly and continuously, and Logan realized after about four seconds that she was not talking to Vaerith at all. She was counting. Numbers and angles in a low even stream that never stopped.
’She is reading thirty-seven units in real time and feeding him the answer.’ The understanding arrived whole and unwelcome. ’Not the threat. The minimum. The smallest movement that makes each strike miss.’
Solveig’s blade passed eleven centimeters from Vaerith’s ribs.
Eleven centimeters. The same margin she had used on Alice’s arrow at the tree.
---
"Pull them back," Alice said into the sigil.
"Not yet."
"Logan, they are not going to land anything. They are going to tire out and then he is going to start killing them."
"I know." Logan was watching the numbers, not the units. "Give me four more seconds. I want to see what she cannot do."
Ilyra Tanthess handled thirty-seven Mythic-plus units, a Void Harbinger dropping from two hundred meters, and a Vorpal Lord for thirty full seconds without her voice changing pitch once.
Then Sonic came in.
He came in from four kilometers up with Skyrend Current stacked the entire descent, and for the first time the stream of numbers coming off the stool stuttered.
Vaerith moved nineteen centimeters instead of eleven.
Logan saw it.
"There," he said. "Pull them back."
---
The units disengaged and Vaerith let them go, which told Logan something else he filed away.
"Nineteen centimeters," Logan called across the rock.
Ilyra’s head came up.
"Yes," she said.
"Why?"
"Because he is faster than my sampling rate." She said it without any defensiveness, the way somebody reports the weather.
"I do not see everything. I see everything I have time to measure. Your storm unit arrives faster than I can measure him, so I give Vaerith a wider margin and accept the inefficiency."
"You just told me your weakness."
"I told you a limit. They are different things." Ilyra folded her hands again. "Knowing the limit does not get you past it. Your storm unit is one object. I can afford a wider margin for one object."
’And Alice’s arrows are one object at a time as well.’ Logan turned that over. ’Unless they are not.’
---
Vaerith had waited through the whole exchange without moving off the rise.
"Are we finished with the preliminaries?" he asked.
"Almost."
"Take your time. I meant what I wrote." He rolled his shoulders once. "I would rather you had no reason afterward to think you were tired."
"Afterward."
"Afterward." Vaerith smiled. "One of us is going to be standing here in a while and it is going to matter which. I have no interest in it mattering less because you were carrying an injury."
Logan looked at a man with no units and no territory anywhere on the board, carrying nineteen Warlord badges in his pocket.
’He has spent this entire match preparing for a fight he could have avoided at any point.’
"Why," Logan said.
Vaerith considered the question long enough that it was clear he was answering it honestly.
"Because the Tower takes everything else," he said. "The gear stays behind. The territory stays behind. The points convert into a number somebody looks at once. The only thing that leaves a match intact is what you were when you were in it."
He raised the sword.
"And I would like to find out what I am."
---
Logan drew.
```
[ Reaper’s Stride: 400 stacks. ]
```
He did not push it. The plan required him not to.
Vaerith came off the rise and the two of them met in the middle of six hundred meters of bare rock, and the first exchange told Logan everything he had already expected.
The man was good. Not extraordinary. Better than the tree, because at the tree he had been curious and here he was not.
```
[ Attack: -3% ]
[ Speed: -3% ]
```
It started immediately and it did not stop.
’Do not fight it.’ Logan blocked and gave ground and blocked again. ’Every instinct says break contact and reset the timer. That is the trap. That is what he wants, because breaking contact is how you spend a fight doing nothing.’
```
[ Attack: -8% ]
[ Speed: -8% ]
```
So he stayed in it. He stayed in it and did not push his stacks and did not touch Grimbound Threshold and let Vaerith Solmane grind him down exactly the way Vaerith Solmane intended.
Because the whole point was that Attrition Sovereign could only reduce one person.
And it was not reducing Alice.
---
Four hundred meters back, Alice had been drawing since the units disengaged.
```
[ Starfall Cadence: 310 stacks. ]
```
She had not fired one arrow yet. She had been building on the training dummies Xairon threw up for her, because Cadence did not care what she hit, only that she hit it.
Ilyra Tanthess was sitting on a stool with her hands folded, feeding her partner a stream of numbers, holding thirty-seven units and a Void Harbinger and a Vorpal Lord in her head at once.
One object at a time, she had said. She could afford a wider margin for one object.
```
[ Starfall Cadence: 480 stacks. ]
```
’So do not send one.’
Alice raised the Skyrend Sinew Bowstring, and Velocity came up around the first shaft, and she did not aim at Ilyra Tanthess at all.
She aimed at eleven different points around her and fired all of them inside a second and a half.
The stream of numbers stopped.
For the first time since the ship had come over the horizon, Ilyra Tanthess stood up off the stool.
She got clear of nine.
```
[ Damage dealt: 44,200. ]
[ Ilyra Tanthess: 71% HP ]
```
"Vaerith," she said, and her voice was not level anymore. "She is faster than my sampling rate too."
