Chapter 2907: Turning Point

Emery.

Deputy director of the Inspection Department.

He had worked for many years in the Western District Federation parliament and was highly trusted. A few years ago, he was transferred to the Inspection Department and appointed as the deputy director. It was rumored that he was ready to take over as the official minister at any time.

Gisele had met Emery several times and didn’t like him.

Gisele was the first to speak, "We’re in a state of emergency. If you want to talk to me about Fang Heng, I suggest you don’t waste your time."

"Heh..."

Emery let out a chuckle, waved his hand to signal his inspection team to back away, then looked into the distance and slowly said, "What if I wanted to talk to you about the Seed of Ouroboros?"

"Sorry, I’m not interested."

Emery ignored the captain’s response and continued, "It’s true that the secret development of the Seed of Ouroboros was managed by the military department, but long before that, our Inspection Department had already gathered quite a bit of data. We just never received authorization from our superiors to conduct experiments on the Seed of Ouroboros."

Gisele had heard about this.

Reportedly, there had been conflicts between the military department and the Inspection Department over the rights to develop the Seed of Ouroboros. Eventually, the Central Federation Parliament decided to place the project under the military’s control.

"I’m busy. What exactly are you trying to say?"

"No need to be so hostile. We just want to cooperate. How about we share some of our data? We’ve gathered a lot of information over the years, both through official and unofficial channels, whether in the light or in the dark..."

Emery paused for a moment, then continued, "In exchange, we at the Inspection Department would like to participate in the military’s Seed of Ouroboros experiment."

Gisele was increasingly irritated.

After the military took over the Seed of Ouroboros project, all related materials were supposed to be turned over to them.

Yet Emery, clearly in possession of data, not only hadn’t handed it over but was now using it to barter for entry into the project.

Especially during such a critical time.

Humanity as a whole was facing extinction.

And still, people were playing political games!

This was exactly why the Federation had been declining—because of parasites like him!

Gisele’s expression turned cold, and he said in a deep voice, "You don’t need to tell me any of this. My authority only covers ship operations. Beyond that, I follow military orders."

"Captain Gisele, it seems you have a strong opinion about me."

Emery looked at the captain and continued, "Captain, please believe in our sincerity. Perhaps you’re unaware, but due to the earlier crystal worm theft incident, our department has already submitted a request to the Federation Parliament to conduct a full investigation into the Seed of Ouroboros."

"Even if you don’t allow it, we will enter the military jurisdiction through a Central Parliament decision and oversee the Seed of Ouroboros with official observers. I just thought it would be more beneficial to cooperate with you before exercising that authority."

"Hmph."

Gisele snorted coldly.

Indeed, he had heard whispers about this.

"Hahaha," Emery noticed the change in the captain’s expression and chuckled. He took two steps forward and said, "What if I told you I have the means to weaken the Seed of Ouroboros polymers?"

"Really?"

"I told you—we’ve gathered a lot of data on the Seed of Ouroboros. We even tried developing some potions. And it just so happens that some of these potions can affect the swarm—temporarily weakening them, for instance."

"Where are they?"

Emery flipped his wrist and took a silver potion case out of his backpack, opening it in front of the captain.

The case was full of various potions.

"These are the first batch of experimental products."

"You’re sure they work?"

"I swear on my life—they’re effective. But don’t rush. Let’s talk about the terms first, shall we?"

The captain’s face darkened.,"I told you, I have no authority over collaborations."

"No problem. I’m not asking for much. Just a promise. Once the threat is neutralized, allow us to take a small portion of the Seed of Ouroboros cocoons."

Gisele frowned deeply.

"My orders from the military are to use all means to gather the Seed of Ouroboros."

"Heh... and they also told you to ensure this mission is a complete success. Are you sure you can achieve that with your current strength? If you fail to defeat the Seed of Ouroboros polymers, forget the cocoons—you won’t even complete your mission. Besides, if neither of us talks, who would ever know?"

Gisele was silent and shook his head.

"You’ve got the wrong person. Everything you said today—I’ll report it to the military exactly as it happened."

Emery smiled slightly and turned his gaze to the frontlines. "Of course, that’s your right. But if you change your mind, you know where to find me. Though I suspect... You don’t have much time left."

On the frontlines, as three Seed of Ouroboros polymer entities joined the fray, the entire Federation team fell into deep trouble and began retreating.

The good news was that the ship still had plenty of materials and energy. The defensive barrier remained active and could hold out for quite a while.

Emery stood calmly to the side, smiling.

He could see it clearly.

The Federation wouldn’t last much longer.

Retreat?

Let’s see how far you can run! When the prism barrier shatters after all that effort, let’s see if you can hold back!

Hm?

Suddenly, Emery raised an eyebrow.

What was that?

Captain Gisele was also staring at the battlefield ahead, clearly surprised.

That was...

A mutant worm?

"Whoosh! Whoosh whoosh whoosh!!!"

Cracks split open across the ground.

A large number of Lickers surged up from the earth, rushing toward the insect swarm.

Emery stared at the Lickers emerging from the rifts, deep in thought.

Were those Fang Heng’s summoned creatures?

He had heard of them before arriving.

These special mutant worm bodies had great individual power.

But...

There weren’t enough of them.

Against a sea of mutant worms, five hundred Lickers couldn’t hold the line—they were instantly swallowed by the swarm and completely overwhelmed.

Although some were still alive and struggling to attack, the sheer density of enemies had significantly reduced their effectiveness.

"Whoosh! Whoosh whoosh whoosh!!!"

But the next moment, the ship’s left flank suddenly unleashed a barrage of fire, focusing on a single area.

The dense swarm of mutant worms was instantly cleared from that section.

Hm?

Emery frowned.

What did that mean?

"Ka, ka ka..."

At the front-right of the ship, where fire had concentrated earlier, more cracks split the ground.

More Lickers poured out, but this time, they didn’t attack.

Instead, they quickly grouped up, forming a defensive line.

The ship’s firepower focused on the area surrounding this line, keeping the swarm at bay long enough to prevent the Lickers from being overwhelmed.

Emery’s curiosity deepened. He couldn’t help but ask, "Captain, what is this?"
