Ren Yuanyang nodded slightly. "That’s a good idea. Jiamei, figure out a way to test it on James and his men."
"Yes!" Lu Jiamei replied.
Meanwhile, James was having his second meal at Peach Blossom Base.
He froze when he saw the large tub of white rice, the aromatic vegetables, and the shredded potatoes.
"Is this really for us?" James asked, finding it hard to believe.
"Of course. We’ve had a few meals already, and they’ve all been like this. There’s no meat, but I’m sure they used lard in these vegetables. Otherwise, they wouldn’t smell this good!" Des remarked.
James glanced at him. "I thought you couldn’t stand Chinese food."
"At a time like this, we’re lucky to have food at all. We’re in no position to be picky." Des shrugged, stepping forward to pile a mountain of rice onto his plate.
"We can take this much?" James asked, surprised yet again.
"This whole tub is for us. Take as much as you want, as long as you don’t waste it," Des explained. "Of course, you have to think about the other guys, too. Don’t eat it all yourself!"
James rolled his eyes. No one could finish a whole tub by themself, not even if they ate until they burst.
After filling his plate, he sat down next to Des and asked in a low voice, "The conditions here are so good. Why were you still thinking about rebelling?"
Des paused for a moment. "That’s exactly why I wanted to rebel! You can hear the wind and the waves outside, can’t you?"
James paused, then nodded.
"Judging by the sound of the wind and waves, we’re probably in a sea with force-six winds. To have this much food in a region like this... it’s a perfect natural base!" Des murmured. "If we could actually take this place, we wouldn’t have to go back to Xi’an Base and be enforcers for Bao Mu!"
James finally understood Des’s line of thinking.
"Unfortunately, they’re too strong. That dream of yours isn’t going to happen," James said, shaking his head helplessly.
"It’s a good thing you showed up in time to stop me. Otherwise, I would’ve been signing my own death warrant!" Des said with some relief, then continued, "It’s not a total loss, though. Since they’re so strong, we’ll just be their underlings. At worst, they’ll be like Bao Mu. It can’t get any worse than that, anyway!"
James nodded in complete agreement.
Even though they were Evolvers, they had no loyalty to Bao Mu or Xi’an Base. This was mainly because they had also been forced to participate in experiments. They had personally witnessed their comrades die screaming in agony!
They had gone through the same torment themselves, only surviving by a stroke of luck.
They wanted to defect from Xi’an Base but had never found the chance. Every time they went out on a mission, Bao Mu would send some of his trusted followers with them.
On top of that, defecting from Xi’an Base would mean having to worry about supplies, so they could only swallow their pride and remain under Bao Mu’s thumb.
Being captured by Peach Blossom Base was the perfect opportunity for them to break away from Xi’an Base!
"I get the feeling the leader here is completely different from Bao Mu," James said after swallowing a mouthful of rice.
"Yeah, Bao Mu would never treat prisoners this well!" Des nodded in agreement. "I used to think Dragon Country was a land of devils, but now I realize that was all just propaganda from our media back home!"
James nodded. "I hope we can earn the leadership’s trust soon."
Des shook his head helplessly. "That’s probably going to be difficult. We’re foreigners, after all. It’ll be hard for them to ever trust us completely."
"Yeah..." James sighed.
After lunch, Lu Jiamei went straight to the cabin on the supply ship where the Evolvers were being held.
