Chapter 208: Chapter 164: Experiment Successful, A Small Trial at the Base
"Yes, sir!" everyone replied, standing up excitedly.
Everyone waited with bated breath until the following evening.
Inside the Aircraft Carrier Base’s laboratory, the groans had all ceased. The vitals of every test subject now met the criteria for an Evolver!
"Captain, the experiment with the Evolution Potion from Peach Blossom Base was a success!" Zhao Jun reported to Wang Jun, his face alight with excitement.
Wang Jun nodded. He summoned Ji Yizhi and Long Zhan, and the three of them headed to the lab together.
Yamamoto Goro had fallen silent. When he saw Wang Jun and the other two, he began calculating the distance, preparing to make a move and take control of them.
If he could just get control of these three, he had a high chance of escaping unscathed.
Wang Jun and his companions soon reached the spot closest to him. Without a moment’s hesitation, Yamamoto Goro unleashed the Superpower he had just awakened but was not yet familiar with.
A bolt of lightning manifested in front of Yamamoto Goro and shot toward Wang Jun.
The lightning was so fast that the surrounding soldiers couldn’t react. The other Evolvers saw it, but they were too far away to intervene in time.
"Watch out, Captain!" the surrounding soldiers cried out in alarm.
Feeling his attack was about to succeed, Yamamoto Goro used his Superpower again, blasting apart the ropes that bound him.
Just then, a figure instantly appeared in front of Wang Jun, and a huge Wooden Shield materialized at the same time.
CRACK!
The Wooden Shield was instantly cracked by the lightning but didn’t completely shatter.
Yamamoto Goro had no time to be surprised by the other Evolver’s reaction speed. He charged forward.
"What are you waiting for? Attack now!" he yelled, charging toward Wang Jun’s group.
BANG!
The sound of a heavy sniper rifle cracked through the air. The Wooden Shield shattered, and a split second later, Yamamoto Goro’s head exploded in the same way.
His body’s momentum carried it forward several more meters before it collapsed onto the deck.
As for the other captives who had heeded Yamamoto Goro’s call, the moment they moved, they were riddled with holes by heavy machine-gun fire.
Only then did everyone realize that the person standing in front of Wang Jun was none other than Long Zhan.
The fact that Long Zhan was an Evolver had always been a closely guarded secret. Not even the other Evolvers in the Liaoyuan’s fleet knew.
They all stared in shock at the scene before them.
Long Zhan ignored their astonishment. He looked at the fifteen remaining captives and said coldly, "Cooperate with our experiment, or this will be your fate!"
Hearing the translator relay the message, the fifteen survivors nodded cautiously, afraid that any sudden movement would get them shot.
"Clean up these bodies and remove the grenades!" Wang Jun ordered.
The machine gunners had avoided hitting the grenades on the test subjects’ backs. The explosives were only a last resort, to be used if the situation became uncontrollable.
As for whether a machine gunner could hit a grenade and cause it to detonate—a common trope in movies—the real-world probability is so small as to be negligible.
A bullet would have to pierce the grenade’s casing and hit the small internal detonator just right to have any chance of setting it off.
Furthermore, the curved surface of a grenade makes it difficult to pierce cleanly.
In this case, the grenades were on the test subjects’ backs while the machine gunners fired from the front. After passing through the body, the bullets would have lost too much velocity to ever penetrate a grenade.
The area was quickly cleaned, and the fifteen survivors were placed under even stricter guard.
Fortunately, the fifteen survivors included members from all three test groups, so the lab could continue its observation and research.
"I owe you one for that. Otherwise, I might have been forced into an early retirement!" Wang Jun said with a laugh.
"We’re both still on the job. You want to clock out early? Not a chance!" Long Zhan retorted with a smirk.
"This kind of experiment is just too dangerous," Ji Yizhi said, frowning. "We can’t control what kind of Superpowers they awaken. We were lucky Old Long was so quick on the uptake this time. Otherwise, we’d have been in real trouble."
The other two nodded in solemn agreement.
"We should just execute them all and be done with it. Eliminate any future threats," Ji Yizhi suggested.
"We only have fifteen Evolver test subjects left. Between our three fleets, we have nearly thirty Evolvers—almost double their number. With our regular soldiers on top of that, the situation is still manageable. Let’s keep these fifteen for Zhao Jun and his team to study," Wang Jun said, shaking his head. "But you’re right, we definitely need to be more cautious with these experiments from now on."
Ji Yizhi gave a slight nod.
Just then, Zhao Jun walked over to report. "Captain, the fifteen survivors have all awakened common-type abilities. We’ve had them demonstrate their Superpowers. The only remaining risk is if one of them awakens two different types."
"A Dual-Type Evolver... that doesn’t seem impossible," Ji Yizhi cautioned. "You still need to be careful during your experiments."
"Yes, sir!" Zhao Jun acknowledged.
"Are their vitals all stable?" Wang Jun asked.
"Everything is normal," Zhao Jun confirmed with a nod. "The moment they become Evolvers, their physical conditioning improves dramatically! Based on the current vitals of all test subjects, we can already confirm that the Evolution Potion from Peach Blossom Base is a resounding success!"
"Good. Continue your observations," Wang Jun said, then left the lab with Ji Yizhi and Long Zhan.
Once they reached Wang Jun’s office, Long Zhan asked eagerly, "So, can we order more Evolution Potions from Peach Blossom Base now?"
Although he was already an Evolver, one man couldn’t make much of a difference. They needed more people to become Evolvers to form a true fighting force.
