Chapter 666 666: Everyone’s Plans Are Thrown Into Chaos
After a brief moment of thought, Harbor quickly came up with a new plan.
He no longer tried to completely control the Gem of Light.
He pulled his hand away from it, and in the next instant, the Blade of Life appeared in his grip.
The moment Charles saw this, Harbor suddenly rushed forward with ghost-like speed. The green glow of the Blade of Life slashed straight toward Charles’ throat.
Startled, Charles quickly raised his black gold long knife to block.
Once again, the Blade of Life and the black gold long knife collided.
Both weapons carried immense power, yet neither was able to destroy the other.
Charles seized this chance to pull back and create distance from Harbor. He needed a moment to adjust, because the situation had changed completely. He realized now that Harbor’s main target had shifted—Harbor was no longer focused on the fortress, but on killing him.
Standing behind the Twin-Winged Savage Gold-Eater Beast, Charles looked surprised.
“You’re not planning to destroy Withered Tree Fortress anymore?”
Harbor let out a cold laugh.
“Destroying Withered Tree Fortress was always just a way to kill you. Since you’ve already ruined my plan, even if I destroy the fortress, it won’t serve its purpose anymore.
So of course I’ll skip all the meaningless steps and go straight to my true goal. Die, Charles!”
The moment his words fell, a dazzling orb of light suddenly shot out from behind him.
It was the Angel of Light, now empowered by the Gem of Light’s strength.
The Angel’s radiant power had grown so overwhelming that even without taking on its angelic form, it was enough to drive away every trace of darkness around it.
The shadows that once hid mousie vanished, leaving it fully exposed.
Charles had originally planned to use mousie for a sneak attack on Harbor. But now that it was revealed, he had no choice but to let it unleash its Dark Demigod form and clash head-on with the Angel of Light.
Light and darkness collided once again as the two god-tier mystical beasts battled fiercely.
The deepest structures of Withered Tree Fortress were torn apart by the impact.
Even though Harbor had abandoned destroying the fortress as his main objective, the fortress itself was already badly shaken.
The walls on all four sides of Withered Tree Fortress began to crack and crumble.
The badly wounded General Sost had managed to recover a little of his strength during that short break.
He knew that no matter what, he had to stand up and protect Withered Tree Fortress. Enduring the sharp pain in his body, he gathered the few remaining elite soldiers of the Serpent Empire inside the fortress.
“We cannot let Withered Tree Fortress be destroyed! True, we can’t interfere in the battle between Charles and that powerful human Beast Master. But we can still fight against the soldiers of the Stellar Empire.”
With those words, he led the elites up onto the walls.
By now, the fighting on the walls had reached its fiercest point. With the crown prince himself joining the battlefield, the Stellar soldiers were completely fired up.
As chunks of stone peeled away from the fortress walls, the soldiers of the Stellar Empire grew even more excited. Everyone was certain that Withered Tree Fortress was about to fall.
Even the reckless crown prince, standing boldly in the middle of the battlefield, believed the same. His eyes shone with excitement as he stared at the fortress walls, now fragile and crumbling.
“I’m about to win! Once I take Withered Tree Fortress, I can swallow the Serpent Empire whole! Then no one will stop me from becoming the next emperor of Stellar.
And I’ll finally have the chance to kill Charles with my own hands. Without Withered Tree Fortress and the Serpent Empire behind him, he’ll be completely alone. By then, I can have my men wear him down with wave after wave until he dies.”
The crown prince was convinced the battle’s outcome was already decided. That was why he spoke his plans aloud, right there in front of everyone.
But almost no one was paying attention. The soldiers around him were far too focused on the fight.
Only Connell, standing some distance away, caught his words.
Right now, Connell was overwhelmed with anxiety.
He had already made a deal with Charles: if Charles could take down Harbor, the strongest Beast Master from Ancient Academy in the Atacama Desert, Connell would immediately turn on the Stellar Empire and strike them when they least expected it.
That was the only way to deal a crushing blow to Stellar.
But judging from how things looked now, Connell wasn’t confident Charles could defeat Harbor quickly. In fact, it even seemed like Charles was already being suppressed.
Connell was, after all, a relatively weak Beast Master himself. He couldn’t properly see the flow of the battle between Charles and Harbor, nor could he make an accurate judgment.
In this situation, his carefully laid plans had been thrown completely into chaos.
Meanwhile, beneath the walls, the fight between Azka and Aldany was also reaching its final stage.
At this point, Azka had already lost all of his mystical beasts.
Aldany had crushed them one by one, pressing forward step by step until nothing was left. Now Azka could only rely on what little strength remained in his own body to fight back.
Aldany, on the other hand, had barely been weakened. He could easily finish Azka off whenever he chose. Yet he wasn’t happy about it at all.
Because his plans had been thrown into chaos too.
According to his original plan, Aldany should have been the first to break through the walls of Withered Tree Fortress. If he had succeeded, the credit would have been undeniable. Even if the Stellar Empire’s crown prince had little trust in him, once the battle ended, the prince would have had no choice but to reward him.
In Aldany’s mind, the most likely reward was control of the Serpent Empire’s capital—Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis.
If he could take it, he would become the most powerful figure in the entire Atacama Desert. And once the Stellar army eventually withdrew—because it was impossible for them to stay in the desert forever—he could slowly tighten his grip on the whole region.
If everything went smoothly, Aldany believed that one day, he might even crown himself emperor of the Serpent Empire again.
But now, with Withered Tree Fortress collapsing on its own, all of those ambitions had crumbled into dust. His dreams were gone, and his mood soured.
For reasons he couldn’t even put into words, he slowed his assault on Azka. It was as if he were waiting—waiting for the battlefield to shift again.
Azka quickly sensed something was off. He realized Aldany wasn’t trying to kill him right away.
So he used the chance to steady himself, regaining a bit of balance. This time, he didn’t try to mock Aldany—he feared a single taunt might push his enemy into rage and bring about his instant death.
And so, their fight settled back into a tense stalemate.
Meanwhile, inside Withered Tree Fortress, Julian—having already completed his task—could also feel the fortress on the verge of collapse.
But he had no way to simply escape. His location was still in the fortress’s core zone, directly beneath its central spire. It wasn’t right next to where Harbor and Charles were fighting, but it was still the heart of the stronghold.
If he wanted to flee, he would have to break through wave after wave of Serpent soldiers.
And since the Serpent Empire was already at a disadvantage, every one of those soldiers was on high alert.
Julian didn’t believe he could escape so easily.
But he also knew that if he stayed here any longer, he would only be waiting for death.
After a moment of quick thought, he decided to ask Maxwell for help.
He pulled a scroll out of his pocket. The scroll was covered in complex symbols, and once activated, it would send a signal to Maxwell that he was in danger.
He had held off using it before because he wasn’t sure if Maxwell would even come to save him. After all, their relationship had never been very good.
But now, with death closing in, he had no choice but to change his plan.
“I hope you really will come for me,” he muttered under his breath.
Then, without hesitation, he activated the scroll.
The moment the scroll burned away completely, Maxwell instantly received Julian’s call for help.
A faint smile spread across Maxwell’s face.
“It seems Julian has already failed. He just sent me a distress signal,” he said slowly in front of the other members of Ancient Academy.
It was clear he was very pleased. He intended to use this moment to show everyone that he was stronger than Julian, to make them understand that aside from Harbor, he was the one with the most power.
“What do you all think? Should I save him? If I do, it will throw off our plan. Before leaving, our senior brother told me clearly that our job is to support the Stellar Empire’s attack.
If I leave to rescue Julian, I won’t be able to command you to work with the Stellar army. Yes, their offensive is going well, but there’s always a chance something unexpected could happen.”
His words made it sound like he was worried that going to Julian’s aid would ruin their plan.
But as soon as he finished speaking, many of the Ancient Academy members began urging him to save Julian.
It wasn’t because they cared about Julian personally—it was because they thought: if even Julian couldn’t count on being rescued in a desperate moment, then how could any of them expect help when their turn came?
