Chapter 657 657: Julian’s Burning Hatred
The Chrono Rabbit took the initiative to ask Charles to form a contract, which naturally made Charles overjoyed.
“Since you’re the one asking, then let’s sign the contract right now!” Charles said with a smile.
For Charles, signing the contract at this moment carried a certain risk. When a Beast Master forms a contract with a mystical beast, the Beast Master is at their most vulnerable. If an enemy attacked during that process, the Beast Master could suffer a serious injury—one that normal healing methods would be very hard to fix quickly.
But Charles didn’t have time to worry about that. The Chrono Rabbit, though not of the highest quality among mystical beasts, had an extremely rare attribute. Time-type mystical beasts were nearly impossible to find. And once a Beast Master formed a contract with one, they would gain a heightened sensitivity to concepts related to time itself.
A transparent glow quickly appeared between Charles and the Chrono Rabbit. The light connected them, and the contract bound their souls together.
At the same moment their contract was formed, Julian inside Gold Fortress also sensed it. After all, he had once been the Chrono Rabbit’s master. When Charles destroyed the bond between him and the rabbit, Julian felt it.
Back then, he hadn’t cared much. He thought Charles was only doing it to get rid of the rabbit completely.
But when he realized Charles had actually signed a contract with the Chrono Rabbit, his emotions exploded into violent rage.
“That damned rabbit! It actually betrayed me! And Charles—he stole my mystical beast! I’ll make him pay for this!”
Julian’s fury boiled over, and he smashed every piece of furniture in his room.
The noise quickly drew out the other members of the Ancient Academy who lived nearby. They gathered to watch, whispering to each other.
Everyone was guessing why Julian was so furious, but none of them dared to ask. Their strength was far below Julian’s, and all of them had been under his command before.
While the group stood frozen, unsure what to do, Maxwell walked straight over.
“What’s going on here? Why are you all just standing around?”
“Sir, this room belongs to Julian. Just now, for some unknown reason, he started smashing all the furniture inside. We were all too afraid to ask him why,” one of the Ancient Academy Beast Masters explained quietly to Maxwell.
Maxwell nodded.
“Don’t just stand around here. The attack on Withered Tree Fortress is about to begin, and you all need to get ready as soon as possible. Go make your preparations—I’ll handle things here.”
After sending the crowd away, Maxwell opened Julian’s door.
The sight that greeted him was a wrecked room. All the furniture had been smashed to pieces, and Julian was crouched in the deepest corner, his body trembling.
“What happened that made you lose control like this? In my impression, you’ve always been a very calm person.”
Maxwell leaned against the doorframe and asked coldly.
His relationship with Julian was never very good. The only reason he came here at all was to keep the situation from escalating. After all, they were living very close to the Stellar Empire’s camp.
Julian didn’t answer. He kept his back to Maxwell, though the trembling stopped. Instead, he began to take long, deep breaths.
“If you don’t want to tell me, fine. I’ll just report this to Senior.”
Maxwell turned to leave as he said this.
“Wait!” Julian’s stiff voice finally came from inside the room.
“So, you’re finally willing to talk to me?”
“I won’t tell you anything. But you said you’d go see Senior—let’s go together.”
Julian brushed past him as he spoke.
Watching Julian’s back, Maxwell spat on the ground.
“Acting all high and mighty… I’ve seen you fawning in front of Senior before. Yet with us, you always put on this cold facade.”
Despite all his resentment toward Julian, Maxwell still followed through on what he had said. Together, the two of them went to find Harbor.
At that moment, Harbor was studying a map. When Maxwell and Julian entered the room, he immediately rolled the map up and put it aside.
“How odd. Why are the two of you coming to me together?” Harbor asked with interest.
He was well aware of the bad blood between Maxwell and Julian. In the past, the two of them refused to cooperate, even ignoring each other when he assigned tasks. For them to arrive together now, there had to be a special reason.
Maxwell spoke first.
“Senior, I originally came to discuss the details of the attack we’ll be launching in a few days. But on my way, I saw a crowd gathered outside Julian’s room. He seemed to be smashing his furniture. I asked him why, but he gave me no answer. When I suggested that you might want to ask him yourself, he decided to come along with me.”
Harbor nodded after listening.
“And the real reason? You should be able to tell me, right?” he asked, turning to Julian.
Julian’s handsome face twisted with rage. He didn’t even bother arguing with Maxwell anymore. He went straight to the point.
“Senior! I want your permission to go after Charles during the battle. I’ll stop at nothing to kill him!”
Harbor paused to think over those words.
Maxwell, however, didn’t think that far. He laughed outright.
“You still want to challenge Charles? You’d be lucky to finish the tasks Senior already gave you. Leave killing Charles to him—don’t overestimate yourself.”
But the moment Maxwell finished speaking, he regretted it. He suddenly noticed the cold look Harbor was giving him. Maxwell quickly shut his mouth and lowered his head.
After a moment of silence, Harbor asked Julian,
“Why? What happened? We already had our battle plans set, didn’t we?”
“Charles stole my mystical beast! The Chrono Rabbit was my strongest beast. He destroyed my contract with it—and then signed a new one with it himself. As a Beast Master, I’ve suffered unbearable humiliation! Only killing Charles can wash away this shame. Please, Senior, give me this chance.”
Julian spoke with fiery passion, almost trembling with anger.
Harbor listened and silently nodded. As a Beast Master himself, he knew how deeply humiliating such a thing was.
Even Maxwell, who had always been at odds with Julian, looked shocked. Normally, once a contract was formed between a Beast Master and a mystical beast, it lasted a lifetime.
In the Ancient Academy, stealing another’s mystical beast wasn’t unheard of, but for the one who lost it, there was usually only one fate—death. What reason would a Beast Master have to keep living if he couldn’t even protect his own beast?
That was how cruel the Ancient Academy was.
But if a mystical beast belonging to an Ancient Academy Beast Master was taken away by an outsider, that was another matter entirely. Even if that Beast Master was branded a failure inside the Academy, to the outside world he still carried the Academy’s honor.
“You really do deserve revenge. And yes, I should give you that chance,” Harbor said seriously.
He knew he couldn’t stop Julian. If he denied him the right to seek revenge, Julian’s will would be crushed completely.
Even though Harbor didn’t think much of Julian’s strength, the truth was that out in the Atacama Desert, Julian was still an important figure to him. He needed Julian to play a role in the battles ahead.
Hearing Harbor’s words, Julian grew excited.
“Thank you so much! I will not fail! I won’t waste this chance!”
Harbor shook his head.
“Don’t get too excited just yet. I should give you the chance, yes—but only after you finish the task I’ve given you. First, you must enter Withered Tree Fortress and activate the summoning scroll. After that, you’ll be free to challenge Charles. If necessary, I’ll even provide you with support.”
Harbor made this point very clear. He had no intention of letting Julian’s desire for revenge disrupt the careful plans he had already laid out.
Julian replied firmly,
“You have my word. Only after I complete the mission you gave me will I go after Charles. I will never ruin the plan we’ve already made!”
“Good. Then all you need to do now is prepare for battle. Everything else doesn’t concern you.”
With that, Harbor dismissed Julian.
After Julian left, Maxwell hesitated for a moment before asking,
“Do you really think he has any chance of getting revenge on Charles?”
Hearing this, Harbor chuckled.
“What a foolish question. If he alone could take revenge on Charles, would I need to make such a detailed plan in the first place? I’m only giving him the chance. If he fails, that’s his problem. Dean Everett won’t tolerate failure—and neither will I.”
Maxwell lowered his head even further at those words. A cold worry settled over him. If he failed in the battles to come, he knew his own fate would be just as tragic.
