Jet remained beside the bed for several seconds, staring at the final notification hovering before him.

The pain from the advancement had already begun fading into a deep soreness across his back and shoulders, but the names floating in crimson light made it difficult to care.

Asura Arms. Asura Mask. Weapon Master. His Divine Rune had spent weeks giving him nothing beyond Asura Physique, and now a single stage advancement had expanded his arsenal all at once. Rather than activate anything blindly, Jet dismissed the individual notifications and called up the complete Rune interface.

[Eight-Armed Asura]

[Rank: SSS]

[Status: Active]

[Rune Stage: Awakened]

[Synchronization: 5.00%]

[Bound Authorities: War | Combat | Slaughter]

[Abilities:]

[Asura Physique — Stage II]

[Asura Arms — Stage I]

[Asura Mask — Stage I]

[Innate Trait: Weapon Master]

Five percent. Jet lingered on the number. The pile of dead Cores beside him made the cost painfully obvious. An enormous quantity of essence had raised the Eight-Armed Asura by only four percentage points, and that had merely carried it from Dormant into Awakened. Whatever thresholds waited beyond this stage would not become cheaper.

He had expected an SSS-Rank Divine Rune to be resource hungry, but seeing the exchange directly was different. Fortunately, tonight’s result was worth considerably more than a percentage increase. Jet selected Asura Physique first.

[Asura Physique — Stage II]

[The Vessel possesses the developing physique of an Asura.]

[Stage II Effect: Retained Adaptation.]

[Repeated exposure to physical, environmental and combat stresses may produce permanent adaptive improvements within the limits of the Vessel’s current development.]

[Adaptation efficiency is influenced by repetition, severity, recovery and Vessel compatibility.]

[Warning: Adaptation does not grant immediate immunity. Damage exceeding the Vessel’s survivable limits remains fatal.]

Jet read the description twice. Stage I had already allowed his body to adjust during prolonged combat. Movements became more efficient, reactions sharpened and his body learned how to function under mounting pressure.

The crucial word now was permanent. If he repeatedly subjected himself to a particular category of stress and survived it, some of those adaptations could remain instead of disappearing once the battle ended.

That was terrifying when measured across years rather than days. Repeated blunt-force battles could gradually harden his body against impact. High-speed opponents could force improvements in reaction and movement efficiency. Mana strain could condition pathways that repeatedly endured it.

Weapon training could carve efficient movements deeper into his physical instincts. None of it meant someone could stab him tonight until knives stopped working, and his 1-Star foundation still imposed a ceiling on what his body could become. Trying to adapt to something overwhelmingly beyond him would simply leave a corpse that had learned nothing.

Jet closed the description and selected the next ability.

[Asura Arms — Stage I]

[Manifest two additional Asura Arms from the Vessel.]

[The manifested limbs are physical Mana constructs connected directly to the Vessel’s sensory and motor functions.]

[Asura Arms may grasp, strike, defend, manipulate physical objects and wield weapons.]

[Current Manifestation: 2 Additional Arms.]

[Warning: Independent multi-limb coordination requires training. Excessive manifestation duration increases Mana consumption and neurological strain.]

Jet’s attention immediately sharpened. He stood and moved away from the bed, making sure there was enough space between himself, the wall and every expensive object in the room. He wasn’t going to discover a new ability by punching through the hotel’s furniture.

After taking a breath, he focused on the unfamiliar sensation sitting beneath the Asura tattoo and willed the ability to activate.

Heat gathered across his upper back.

Crimson-black Mana spilled from beneath his shirt and climbed over his shoulders before bending backward. Jet felt pressure near his shoulder blades, followed by the deeply unnatural sensation of limbs existing where no human limbs should exist.

Mana condensed rapidly until two muscular arms emerged behind him, positioned slightly above and behind his natural pair. Their surface wasn’t flesh. Dark crimson energy formed dense musculature and articulated fingers, while faint black markings ran along them like extensions of the tattoo beneath his clothes.

Jet stared over his shoulder.

He could feel every finger.

That was the disturbing part.

He thought about closing the left hand, and five spectral fingers curled into a fist. He opened it again, rotated the wrist, then tried the right. Both responded without noticeable delay. When he reached toward the desk, one manifested arm followed his intention and wrapped its fingers around an empty glass.

Jet lifted it carefully. The glass rose.

"Damn."

He tried moving his natural right hand while rotating both manifested wrists in opposite directions. The first attempt immediately exposed the limitation. One Asura Arm hesitated while the other mirrored part of a movement he hadn’t intended.

Jet frowned and tried again, concentrating harder. Better, but still clumsy. Having four arms wasn’t the same thing as knowing how to use four arms. His brain could control them, yet coordinating four independent limbs simultaneously would require practice.

That made the final progression obvious. Two additional arms gave him four. Another stage could bring six. Eventually, the name Eight-Armed Asura would stop being symbolic.

Jet carefully returned the glass to the desk before dismissing the ability. Both arms dissolved into streams of crimson-black Mana that sank into his back. A mild pressure remained behind his eyes afterward, confirming the neurological strain mentioned in the description.

His attention moved to Weapon Master.

[Weapon Master — Innate Trait]

[War recognizes no single weapon.]

[The Vessel possesses extraordinary aptitude for learning, understanding and integrating weapons.]

[Greatly increases weapon comprehension, coordination and proficiency growth.]

[Compatible principles developed through one weapon may accelerate comprehension of another.]

[Weapon Master does not grant experience, technique or mastery that has not been earned.]

Jet smiled slowly.

That last sentence prevented the ability from becoming ridiculous in the wrong way. He couldn’t pick up a spear tomorrow and somehow possess thirty years of spear experience.

He would still need instruction, repetition, combat and thousands upon thousands of movements before knowledge became genuine skill. Weapon Master simply changed how quickly he could understand what he practiced and how efficiently those lessons accumulated.

Then Jet remembered the Asura tattoo.

Sword. Spear. Bow. Axe. Trident. Vajra.

Six weapons occupied six of the eight hands depicted across his back, while another wielded lightning and the final hand formed a mudra. Until now, Jet had treated those weapons primarily as part of the Rune’s mythological design, important to the Conceptual Weight that made the tattoo what it was.

Weapon Master and Asura Arms suggested something more deliberate. Perhaps the image wasn’t merely showing what the Eight-Armed Asura looked like.

Perhaps it was showing him what he could eventually become.

Jet resisted the temptation to spend another hour testing the manifested arms and selected the final ability.

[Asura Mask — Stage I]

[Manifest the War Mask of Asura.]

[Temporarily suppresses protective restraints imposed upon the Vessel’s physical and Mana output, allowing greater utilization of the Asura Physique.]

[Enhances available strength, acceleration, reflexive output, Mana throughput and combat performance according to the Vessel’s current capacity.]

[Warning: Asura Mask does not increase the Vessel’s safe physical limits.]

[Excessive output may result in muscular rupture, skeletal damage, internal bleeding, Mana pathway trauma, sensory overload and temporary loss of motor function.]

Jet’s earlier excitement cooled.

This wasn’t an ordinary enhancement.

The human body imposed restraints for a reason. Muscle, bone, joints, nerves and Mana pathways could only tolerate so much force before the same power meant to protect the body began destroying it. Asura Mask allowed him to loosen those restraints and demand more from the physique than it could safely produce.

In exchange, the bill arrived afterward.

Jet could already imagine situations where that trade would be worthwhile. A fraction more acceleration could mean avoiding a killing strike.

Greater Mana throughput could provide enough power to finish an opponent before they finished him. If the alternative was death, torn muscles and cracked bones became acceptable costs.

Using it casually would be idiotic.

There was an obvious interaction with Retained Adaptation. If Asura Physique could gradually preserve improvements developed through repeated stress, surviving controlled uses of Asura Mask might eventually condition his body to withstand greater output.

But controlled was the important word. Deliberately ripping his muscles apart every night in the hope that Asura Physique rebuilt him stronger wasn’t training. It was gambling with permanent injury.

Jet closed the description and returned to the complete panel.

Four entries now sat beneath a Rune that had once offered him only Asura Physique. He hadn’t even reached Manifested, Incarnated or Divine Manifestation. This was merely the Awakened Stage of one SSS-Rank Divine Rune.

One.

Jet’s gaze shifted toward the section of his Status containing the others.

[Rakshasa — SSS — SEALED]

[Yama — SSS — SEALED]

[Ouroboros — SSS — SEALED]

[Lucifer: The Morning Star — SSS — SEALED]

[Nine-Tailed Void Kitsune — SSS — SEALED]

[Samsara: The Eight-Spoked Dharma Wheel — SSS — SEALED]

[Ilios: The Undying Sun — SSS — SEALED]

[Thanatos — SSS — SEALED]

[Primal Yin-Yang — SSS — SEALED]

Nine.

Even after everything Asura had just revealed, nine more remained inaccessible within him. Jet had known since the Second Red Moon that surviving their simultaneous awakening had been a miracle.

What he still didn’t know was how he was supposed to release them. The System had sealed them because his body couldn’t sustain their combined existence, but it had never presented a path toward reversing that emergency measure.

A flicker crossed the panel.

Jet froze.

The sealed entry for Ilios had changed.

A thin white-gold flame appeared beside its name.

Before Jet could touch it, every other interface disappeared and the familiar crimson light of the Red Moon System expanded across his vision.

[Primary Divine Rune Development Threshold Achieved.]

[Vessel Stability Increased.]

[Secondary Divine Rune Release Eligibility Detected.]

Jet’s heartbeat accelerated as another notification appeared.

[Evaluating Sealed Divine Runes...]

The message remained for several seconds.

Then the crimson panel flashed white-gold.

[Next Eligible Divine Rune Identified.]

[ILIOS — THE UNDYING SUN]

[Release Conditions Available.]
