Global Awakening: Apocalypse Ender's Chronicle
Chapter 1293: Against the Demons
"Nice!"
Reese’s smile widened slightly when he sensed the demons moving through the darkness.
"They know we’re here."
The Super Soldiers immediately became alert.
They had already been briefed about the dangers of dealing with demons, but hearing Reese say that the enemies had noticed their presence still made them instinctively worry as they held their weapons.
Wade slowly raised his rifle and looked toward the dark passage ahead.
For a few moments, nothing happened.
Then they heard something... It was the faint scraping sound that came from somewhere deep within the underground tunnels. Then, it was followed by a growl that could be heard through the stone walls.
Just like that, more growls followed as they started getting closer.
Wade’s took a deep breath as he also started sensing their presence...
"How many?"
"Dozens."
Reese’s answer was calm.
"They’re coming."
As soon as he finished speaking, several black figures suddenly rushed out of the darkness.
The demons moved far faster than the Super Soldiers had expected. Their bodies were terrifying due to the demonic corruption.
They had sharp claws extending from their hands and patches of dark scales covering their skin. Their eyes glowed with a red light as they charged toward the group.
It was a familiar sight for them at this point...
"Open fire!"
Just like that, Wade pulled the trigger.
The sound of automatic gunfire immediately filled the underground passage.
The other Supersoldiers followed his lead, unleashing a storm of bullets toward the approaching demons. Of course, their weapons had been specifically for this mission, and the ammunition they carried was not ordinary.
The first wave of demons was struck before they could reach the group.
Rooaar!
Several bullets tore through their bodies, but the creatures did not immediately fall. Their wounds began to close at an alarming speed, and one of the demons continued charging despite having half of its shoulder blown apart.
The Supersoldiers’ expressions changed.
"They’re regenerating!"
"Switch ammunition!"
Wade shouted.
They immediately changed their magazines.
The next volley of bullets produced a completely different reaction.
The moment the blessed ammunition pierced the demons’ flesh, white sparks spread from the wounds. Black smoke rose from their bodies as the demonic corruption was burned away, slowing their regeneration.
Reese nodded when he saw this.
"Good. Keep them suppressed."
He reached behind his back and pulled out a weapon that looked like a crossbow, although it was considerably more sophisticated than any ordinary crossbow...
Several silver bolts were attached to its side, and all of them were covered with tiny inscriptions.
Reese calmly loaded one of them.
A demon suddenly broke through the gunfire.
It leaped toward him with its claws extended, expecting to tear him apart before he could react.
However, Reese simply pulled the trigger.
The silver bolt flew through the air and struck the demon directly in the chest.
Thud!
The creature was thrown backward.
Before it could recover, strange glowing lines spread from the bolt and formed a complex seal across its body.
"Demon Seal."
The demon’s movements immediately became sluggish.
Reese rushed forward.
His weapon changed in his hand as he drew a short silver blade from his belt. The weapon was covered in runes designed specifically to disrupt demonic energy.
Just like that, with a swing of his blade, it cut through the demon’s neck.
The creature’s head fell to the ground, and its body immediately began to dissolve into black smoke.
Reese didn’t even stop.
"Demonbane Strike."
Purified energy exploded from his blade as he attacked the demons...
The demon’s body that got hit first violently shook as the energy spread through its corrupted flesh, and a moment later, its entire torso was torn apart from within.
Thud!
Reese pulled his weapon free and immediately turned his attention toward the rest of the battlefield.
The Supersoldiers were doing surprisingly well.
Their weapons weren’t as specialized as his, but they had an enormous advantage in firepower. The demons could survive ordinary bullets, but the combination of blessed ammunition and concentrated automatic fire was slowly wearing them down.
Then, one of the demons suddenly opened its mouth.
A dark mist poured from between its teeth.
"Don’t breathe that!" Reese shouted.
The warning came just in time.
The black mist rapidly spread through the tunnel, covering the battlefield.
The Supersoldiers immediately held their breath and pulled back, but the mist was already beginning to seep around their protective equipment.
Reese reached into his belt and pulled out a small metallic cylinder.
He crushed it in his hand and a brilliant white light erupted from the device.
The dark mist hissed as it came into contact with the light, rapidly dissolving until nothing remained.
"Demonic Poison," Reese explained while watching the darkness carefully. "It attacks the nervous system and can paralyze you before you even realize you’ve been poisoned."
One of the Supersoldiers glanced at the device in Reese’s hand.
"Can you make more of those?"
Reese smiled.
"If I could, I wouldn’t have to carry only three."
The soldier immediately looked disappointed.
Before anyone could say anything else, Reese suddenly moved.
He grabbed Wade by the shoulder and pulled him backward.
A claw swept through the space where Wade’s head had been a moment earlier.
Wade’s eyes widened. The demon had somehow appeared behind them without making a sound.
"Thanks."
"Don’t thank me yet. That’s a Shadow Demon..."
Reese raised his crossbow.
He could sense the creature even though it was partially hidden by the darkness.
His Hunter’s Instinct allowed him to see through the demon’s attempt to conceal itself.
Then, he fired. The silver bolt struck the creature’s leg, and another seal appeared. The demon stumbled, and just like that, the terrifying Shadow Demon that could normally annihilate a whole town was easily killed!
The Super Soldiers didn’t even realize just how strong that Demon was, as they easily shot it down with their guns!
Indeed, a concentrated burst of blessed ammunition tore through the demon’s chest, and the creature finally collapsed.
Wade looked at Reese...
He had no idea how strong that Demon was, but it was definitely pretty strong if Reese was quite concerned about it.
"That ability of yours is really useful."
"It keeps me alive."
Reese calmly reloaded his crossbow.
Nonetheless, the battle was far from over!
