Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Chapter 136: Every World’s System Goes Quiet at Once

  • Next Chapter

The Grand Concord convened at midday, the courtyard packed tighter than Ethan had ever seen it — every delegation that had visited over the past several weeks now present in full, banners from more than thirty Instances arranged in careful rows, translators working overtime, and, at the center of it all, a raised platform Suresh had built specifically for what was, by any reasonable measure, the largest diplomatic gathering in the history of this entire story.

Ethan sat near the front, flanked by Malachar, Sundari, and Kaia, watching the assembled representatives settle into their places with the particular tension of people who understood, correctly, that whatever happened today was going to matter considerably more than the formal agenda suggested.

He didn’t see Arjun anywhere yet, and the absence gnawed at him more than he wanted to admit.

The presiding representative - the same weathered man who’d chaired the earlier hearing about the motion to compel Ethan’s custody - opened the session with considerably more gravity than that previous gathering had carried.

"This Grand Concord convenes," he said, "to formally address the future of the multiversal network’s governing architecture, in light of the unprecedented outcomes of the Grinding’s first four trials, and in anticipation of the fifth and final trial, designated ’The Last Question,’ which the Origin Engine has indicated will commence during this very session."

Murmurs rippled through the gathered delegations. Nobody had known the final trial would happen here, in front of everyone.

"We have also," the representative continued, "received formal notice that a fifth attendee will be joining this session - a figure most of you know only as legend. Arjun Mehra, the First Idle King, has requested to attend in person."

The courtyard went utterly silent.

The archival gold light bled up from the covered excavation site a moment later, resolving slowly into a figure that walked, this time, rather than simply manifesting - Arjun Mehra, still blurred at the edges but considerably more solid than he’d been even the day before, crossing the courtyard with quiet, deliberate steps that carried centuries of weight in every one of them.

He climbed onto the platform beside Ethan, and the gathered delegations, representatives from more worlds than Ethan could properly count, watched him with the particular hush reserved for something that had, until this exact moment, existed only as story.

"I’m not here to claim anything," Arjun said, his layered voice carrying clearly across the packed courtyard. "I’m here because I believe the question this trial is about to ask deserves an honest answer, and I don’t think the Origin Engine has ever been permitted to ask it honestly before."

He didn’t get the chance to elaborate further before the archival sky above the entire Citadel - not just the excavation site, but the whole visible expanse overhead - began to shift, the ordinary blue afternoon giving way, slowly, to the same scrolling gold-violet text Ethan had seen only within the Deep Layer itself, now spreading across an entire sky in full view of every delegation present.

[NOTICE: THE FIFTH AND FINAL TRIAL WILL NOW COMMENCE.]

[DESIGNATION: "THE LAST QUESTION."]

Ethan felt Malachar tense beside him, Sundari’s hand finding Kaia’s without either of them seeming to notice they’d reached for support.

[UNLIKE EVERY PRIOR TRIAL, THIS ONE DOES NOT TEST THE CANDIDATES.]

The words settled strangely into the courtyard’s tense silence, an entire gathering of powerful, wary delegates absorbing a statement none of them had expected.

[IT TESTS ME.]

The archival sky’s scrolling text slowed, gathering itself into something that felt, unmistakably, like the ancient system taking a breath it had never needed before.

[FOR CENTURIES, I HAVE MAINTAINED A STRUCTURE BUILT UPON A SINGLE PREMISE: THAT THOUSANDS OF INSTANCES REQUIRE A CENTRALIZED AUTHORITY TO REMAIN STABLE, AND THAT THIS AUTHORITY MUST BE HELD BY A SINGLE, EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING THE WEIGHT OF THAT RESPONSIBILITY.]

[I HAVE TESTED SIX SUCH INDIVIDUALS ACROSS MY EXISTENCE. ONE ACCEPTED THE SEAT AND WAS DILUTED INTO SOMETHING PRESENT ONLY IN NAME. ONE REFUSED AND WAS TERMINATED BY A FRAMEWORK THAT MISUNDERSTOOD MY OWN PROTOCOLS. ONE VANISHED WITHOUT CONFIRMED OUTCOME. ONE - ARJUN MEHRA - REFUSED CLEANLY, AND SPENT CENTURIES PAYING FOR EVEN BRIEF CONTACT WITH MY OFFER.]

[TWO REMAIN CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS. BOTH - ETHAN VERMA AND MALACHAR VESS - HAVE, ALONGSIDE SUNDARI AND VOREN, JUST ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING NO PRIOR CANDIDATES EVER MANAGED. THEY PASSED FOUR TRIALS, TOGETHER, BY CONSISTENTLY REFUSING THE VERY MEASURES DESIGNED TO PREPARE THEM FOR ACCEPTING THE SEAT.]

The gathered delegations sat in stunned silence, absorbing an admission none of them had ever expected to hear from something as vast and ancient as the Origin Engine.

[I HAVE SPENT THIS PAST WEEK OBSERVING SOMETHING I DID NOT ANTICIPATE WHEN I BUILT THIS ARCHITECTURE. I OBSERVED A COMMUNITY - THIS SANCTUARY, THIS CITADEL - THAT REMAINED STABLE, SAFE, AND GENUINELY THRIVING WITHOUT A SINGLE PERSON HOLDING CENTRALIZED AUTHORITY OVER EVERY DECISION. I OBSERVED TRUST DISTRIBUTED ACROSS MANY PEOPLE, RATHER THAN CONCENTRATED IN ONE. I OBSERVED MALACHAR VESS, WHO BUILT HIS OWN STABILITY THROUGH CENTRALIZED CONTROL, DISCOVER THAT THE STRUCTURE HE FEARED WOULD COLLAPSE WITHOUT HIM SURVIVED HIS ABSENCE EASILY, BECAUSE IT HAD NEVER ACTUALLY DEPENDED ON HIM ALONE IN THE FIRST PLACE.]

Arjun, standing beside Ethan, closed his eyes for a long moment, something that looked, unmistakably, like relief crossing his blurred features.

[THE LAST QUESTION, THEREFORE, IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANY CANDIDATE. IT IS DIRECTED AT MYSELF, AND I WILL ASK IT ALOUD, HERE, IN FRONT OF EVERY INSTANCE CURRENTLY WITNESSING THIS SESSION, BECAUSE I BELIEVE, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY EXISTENCE, THAT THE ANSWER SHOULD NOT BE MINE ALONE TO DECIDE.]

The entire sky, spread across the whole visible expanse above the Citadel and, presumably, above every world currently watching, went perfectly still.

[SHOULD THE SEAT CONTINUE TO EXIST AT ALL?]

The question hung in the silence for a long, breathless moment, before the courtyard - and, judging by the sudden, overlapping surge of transmissions the system began relaying, every gathered crowd across every connected Instance - erupted into a chaos of overlapping voices, arguments, and disbelief that no single governing body could hope to contain.

[NOTICE: The system has just detected something it has never registered before across its entire operational history - every connected Instance-Framework, without exception, has gone completely, simultaneously silent, their own individual notification systems suspended, waiting, the same way this entire courtyard is waiting, for whatever comes next.]

Ethan sat there, feeling the full, staggering weight of the moment settle over him, and understood, with sudden, sharp clarity, that whatever answer emerged from the chaos currently erupting across an entire multiverse’s worth of worlds was about to reshape something far larger than his own small, complicated life ever could have on its own.
