Chapter 857 - 857: Blood Of Barbarian
Over the past three years, the inheritance cave had tested Ma Li with trial after trial. She'd been buried alive in shifting sand, her lungs burning as she suffocated slowly.
She had been impaled on blades taller than a person that somehow didn't kill but left her suspended in a state between life and death.
She'd fought in illusory barriers against spirit beasts while poisoned, injured, and even half-dead from exhaustion.
Each trial was designed to break the spirit of the contender. To make them crawl between life and death. To prove to themselves that they were not just another Barbarian or human trying to eye the inheritance of the Barbarian Queen.
Others may have cracked from trying to reach the expectations of the first barbarian queen.
But Ma Li never broke. Because she didn't want to break.
Every trial was a new experience. A new sense of pleasure she had not tasted before, and now she could savor it all. No, she wanted to have it all.
'She's perfect,' the Barbarian Queen's soul fragment thought with something approaching maternal pride. 'Absolutely perfect.'
Ma Li had been on the cross for six hours; The cross that could leave not only Golden Core Realm experts but even Soul Formation realm powerhouses lifeless.
And she was still laughing.
The soul fragment made a decision. 'She is the one; there is no need for further testing.'
The chains binding Ma Li suddenly released. Her body slowly rose from the wooden platform and rose into the air.
And the hell below slowly vanished, snapping Ma Li out of her daze.
'Ah, that's the spot…' while she was enjoying the pleasure with her eyes closed, she suddenly felt emptiness around herself and frowned. "Wait! Don't go just yet. where—"
She looked around and realized that there was nothing around her anymore; the four torments she had been enjoying so much had vanished.
"Nooooo!!!"
"Calm down, you unruly disciple." The voice trickled in her ears, making her stop throwing tantrums for a second. "Though I can understand why you feel that way."
"Disciple?" Ma Li looked around but found no one.
"Now that you have passed my inheritance trials, you are more than worthy to become one." The voice continued. "Now for your reward."
Ma Li's vision swam as space twisted around her.
When it settled, she found herself standing in the very first chamber she walked into upon entering the temple.
The temple itself was not that big, not when compared to the spaces she had been to during the trials. The space inside the room was smaller than any other room she had been to.
The walls were carved with scenes that made her earlier trials look tame, depictions of the Barbarian Queen in her prime, engaging in battles so brutal they bordered on obscene, her arms dangling in the air when her shoulders were several feet away.
The images of her celebrating victories with excesses that would make demons blush. An orgy of several people, men and women, humans, barbarians, and even nonhumans. She would devour them whole, but her face could not show the ecstasy it showed in battles.
And in the center of the chamber, illuminated by torchlight that seemed to burn with blood-red flames, was a pool.
A sense of a thick reservoir of blood.
The blood was so mysterious and concentrated that it seemed to pulse with its own heartbeat. The surface didn't ripple like liquid should.
Ma Li approached the pool slowly, her body still trembling from the aftermath of the cross. Her skin was raw, her flesh scorched; you could see pulsing veins throbbing in places.
She should have been barely able to stand. But she'd never felt more alive.
"Where is this? Who are you?"
As she neared the pool, the voice of the Barbarian Queen rang in her head once more.
"This is your reward, and as for who I am… you should know."
"Aren't you supposed to be dead? It has been thousands of years since you were last seen." Before reaching the trial location, Ma Li found everything she could about the barbarian queen to get a deeper understanding of her nature and trials.
As she walked forward, a set of characters appeared before her.
"Hmph! Legends never die." The barbarian queen declared with a haughty snort. "I am beyond time and beyond death. though I am but a wisp of soul essence, my main body has already ascended the mortal plane while leaving me here to search for an inheritor worthy of her."
Ma Li smiled hearing her words while reading the words before her.
'ABSORB THE BLOOD OF BARBARIANS AND BECOME ONE WITH YOUR TRUE NATURE.'
Ma Li frowned. 'Why the Barbarian blood though?'
Then, as if answering to her thoughts, the words changed.
'ONLY WITH THE BLOOD OF BARBARIANS CAN YOU PROPERLY ENJOY ALL THE PLEASURES OF THE MORTAL REALM.'
More text appeared, flowing like a river of fire.
'THE HUMAN BODY IS NOT CAPABLE OF CONTAINING WHAT YOU TRULY ARE. IT IS TOO FRAGILE. TOO CONSTRICTING.'
Ma Li stared at the words, finally understanding a little. Even though the thought of changing her bloodline made her feel a little odd.
'BUT THE BARBARIAN BLOODLINE... THAT IS DIFFERENT. WE ARE BUILT FOR EXCESS. FOR EXTREMES. FOR EXPERIENCING EVERYTHING THIS WORLD OFFERS WITHOUT RESTRAINT OR FEAR.'
But thinking about the bodies of the barbarians that were supposed to even withstand the onslaught of a spirit beast with no armor, her legs tingled and her eyes drooped. A light damp appeared on the cloth on the small shorts left on her body after her clothes had burned away.
The final line appeared, larger than the rest, burning brighter:
'SHED YOUR HUMAN WEAKNESS. EMBRACE YOUR BARBARIAN STRENGTH. BECOME WHAT YOU CAN BE AND EXPERIENCE ALL THE PLEASURE THERE IS TO EXPLORE IN THE WORLD.'
Ma Li looked from the text to the pool of blood. "You already had me sold on the second-to-last line."
Then, without any hesitation or horror, Ma Li jumped into the pool of blood while screaming.
"Finally," Her voice hoarse from screaming. "Finally, someone who gets it."
"Wait, do you even know how to absorb the blood?" The helpless voice of the queen came a beat later, but Ma Li had already thrown her clothes in the air and jumped into the pool.
The blood around her surged with power and suddenly attacked her from all sides.
Seeing this, a long sigh echoed in the silent chambers, and then the barbarian queen finally made a move.
