Chapter 455: Teacher Tony Bai
Snip. Snip.
The rhythmic sound of scissors opening and closing echoed through the cave without end.
A cat lay quietly on the operating table, while Bai Luo had even gently pulled its tongue out of its mouth to keep it out of the way.
Sharaf, curled up in his little nest nearby, looked somewhat aggrieved. But as the saying went: Man is the vicious dog, I am but the cat. There was little he could do except accept his fate.
More than that, though, what truly concerned him was the fiery red cat that had taken over his usual spot. Just where had it come from?
Bai Luo hadn’t explained the red cat’s origins to either Sharaf or Silver.
At that moment, Bai Luo stood behind Silver, carefully snipping away at his hair with steady strokes.
So Bai Luo even knew how to cut hair?
Well, that wasn’t particularly surprising.
As an assassin, Bai Luo’s specialty wasn’t simply rushing in and killing someone with a knife.
Sometimes, he would disguise himself as all sorts of different people to get close to his target and earn their trust. Once he had squeezed every last piece of information out of them, then he would choose the perfect moment to eliminate them.
That was also one of the reasons his acting skills were so exceptional.
After all, he had plenty of experience.
Silver didn’t say much about Bai Luo’s actions.
Every so often, he simply reached out to catch the strands of hair drifting down, as though lost in thought.
"It really brings back memories," Bai Luo remarked as he combed through Silver’s hair.
"Memories of what?" Silver responded to his comment.
"Nothing much. I just used to cut someone else’s hair too," Bai Luo answered casually.
After becoming a Harbinger, he had rarely used any of the practical skills he’d picked up outside of assassination.
The last time he had cut someone’s hair was probably when he’d met little Collei.
Unlike Silver, however, she had been anything but cooperative. Just trimming her dirty, tangled long hair had taken Bai Luo an incredible amount of effort.
"Someone else?"
Silver sounded curious. Whenever Bai Luo spoke of this person, there was an odd expression on his face.
The unconscious smile tugging at the corners of his lips was the same one he wore whenever he introduced Sharaf to his finest alchemical creations.
"Yeah. A girl," Bai Luo replied offhandedly.
He didn’t notice that after hearing those words, Silver’s expression became thoughtful.
"All right. What do you think of this length?"
After giving Silver’s hair a few final passes with the comb, Bai Luo held up a mirror for him.
Silver’s hair hadn’t been especially long to begin with. Bai Luo had simply trimmed it from waist-length down to about the middle of his back.
"It’s fine."
Silver wasn’t particularly concerned about such things.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have waited until Bai Luo arrived before finally getting his hair cut.
He seemed to be pondering something else entirely.
"Oh, right. There’s still one thing missing."
As if suddenly remembering something, Bai Luo walked over to the corner where Silver kept various odds and ends and began rummaging through them.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t find what he was looking for.
"Silver, are these the only hair ties you have?"
Holding up a crude leather band, Bai Luo asked.
"Yeah."
Silver was a practical person.
The leather band might have been plain, but it was durable and perfect for tying things together.
"I see..."
Bai Luo looked a little disappointed.
He set the leather band down and continued searching.
Eventually, he found a pale purple cord with a faint pink tint.
Silver had probably brought it back with a shipment of supplies from the Fatui.
After using it, he had simply tossed it into a corner.
Walking back over, Bai Luo skillfully gathered Silver’s slightly fluffy hair behind his head and used the cord as a makeshift hair tie to bind it into a ponytail.
"There. This way it won’t get in the way of your experiments, and it still looks good. Not bad."
Bai Luo gave Silver’s head an affectionate rub, clearly satisfied with his handiwork.
As for Silver himself, he remained expressionless, seemingly unconcerned by the whole affair.
"Later on, I’ll find a proper hair tie for you. For now, you’ll just have to make do with this."
After tidying Silver’s hair and brushing the loose clippings from his shoulders, Bai Luo casually took out his erhu.
"...?"
The moment Silver saw the instrument in Bai Luo’s hands, the normally expressionless man suddenly looked rather uneasy.
His gaze began to dart about nervously.
"What are you doing?"
It was the first time Silver had voluntarily spoken since Bai Luo arrived.
It was obvious just how flustered he was.
"I’m going to blow the loose hair off you."
This world didn’t have hair dryers. After washing or cutting someone’s hair, more skilled barbers would usually use the power of the Anemo element to dry the hair and blow away any loose strands.
Bai Luo did possess the Anemo Archon’s blessing, but to manipulate the wind, he had to play the erhu in his hands.
"I’ll just wash it off."
For the first time ever, the usually obedient Silver resisted.
Bai Luo couldn’t help looking a little disappointed.
This kid just doesn’t appreciate art.
"By the way, did you make that?"
Bai Luo glanced toward the other "Silver," who was hiding deep inside the cave, too afraid to come out.
He was referring to the duplicate created by exploiting the Whopperflower’s mimicry.
Although it was something of a clever shortcut, being able to research Whopperflowers to this extent was impressive in its own right.
"Yes."
The inspiration for the permanent cat-transformation potion had come from that very Whopperflower.
If injecting Durin’s blood into a Whopperflower could produce such remarkable results, then what would happen if he mixed both his own blood and Durin’s blood into a potion?
The experiment proved that Gold’s legacy was not something he could safely delve into yet.
Until he completely uncovered the secrets hidden within both his own blood and Durin’s, he had no intention of attempting another experiment like that.
"So... in the future, do you think you’ll create more beings like that? I don’t mean simply enhancing a Whopperflower’s ability to imitate others. I mean creating genuine life."
"..."
Genuine life...
After hearing Bai Luo’s question, Silver instinctively looked toward the pile of books Bai Luo had brought back for him.
From studying those books, he had concluded that aside from Gold, only their author—Albedo—possessed the ability to create true living beings.
Although the lifeforms Albedo created using the Art of Khemia were somewhat inferior to Gold’s creations...
He undeniably possessed that technology.
More importantly, Silver had realized that among the books Bai Luo had brought back, one particularly important volume was missing.
Unlike the instructional texts Albedo had given to his students, this missing book was likely a gift that Gold had personally bestowed upon the Chalk Prince—something that Silver, the "White Silver," had never had the opportunity to glimpse.
It was also a piece of knowledge he could never hope to reconstruct through his own learning alone.
