Chapter 439: As Expected of Me
At first, there was no change in Venti.
But before long, the peaceful expression on his face gradually disappeared, and even his steady breathing fell silent.
Boom!
A tremendous surge of Anemo energy erupted outward.
Mixed within the wind was another strange and mysterious power.
That power spread throughout Angel’s Share, diffusing into the very air.
"Cough... cough..."
The pungent smell was exactly the same as the odor produced when Silver had first failed to brew the potion back in the cave.
Did that mean the potion had no effect on Barbatos?
That made sense. After all, he was a god. To truly affect someone on that level, you’d probably need an alchemist on Rhinedottir’s level.
Oh well.
It would be better to use the potion on ordinary people instead.
Shaking his head in disappointment, Bai Luo stood up, intending to leave.
After unlocking the door, however, he hesitated for a moment before walking back to Venti’s bedside.
If he wanted Lumine to mistake him for Aether, then she absolutely couldn’t come into contact with the Anemo Archon.
And judging by Bai Luo’s estimate, Venti would probably wake up before long.
If that guy decided to interfere while he was busy deceiving Lumine...
"Don’t blame me for being ruthless, Barbatos. We’re close friends, after all."
With his great sword in one hand and a Sunsettia in the other, Bai Luo decided to give Venti the full treatment.
Until he’d had his fun, the Anemo Archon could continue sleeping peacefully.
. . .
Feeling refreshed, Bai Luo stepped out of the staff quarters, casually closing the door behind him.
But the moment he emerged, he realized something was wrong.
The tavern was filled with cats of every imaginable color.
Some lay sprawled drunkenly across the tables as though they’d overdosed on catnip, others stared blankly at their reflections in glasses of wine, seemingly unable to accept their new appearances.
"...Wait a second. Could it be...?"
Recalling the mysterious power that had spread alongside the Anemo energy earlier, Bai Luo immediately understood what had happened.
In other words, Silver’s potion truly had no effect on Catbatos.
However, Catbatos couldn’t completely digest the potion’s power, either.
So the Anemo energy within his body instinctively expelled the foreign force that would have caused side effects.
But Silver’s alchemical skill far surpassed that of ordinary alchemists.
As a result, even after being forced out of Venti’s body, the potion’s power didn’t dissipate on its own.
Instead, carried by the wind, it continued spreading outward until everyone inside Angel’s Share—and even the people nearby—had been transformed into cats.
Should he say, "As expected of Barbatos?"
Or perhaps...
"As expected of Silver?"
Hmm...
After thinking it over for a moment, Bai Luo reached a conclusion.
As expected of me!
After all, who else would ever think to force-feed this kind of potion to the Anemo Archon?
Without him, who would ever have discovered something like this?
"Meow! Meow!"
Seeing that Bai Luo had somehow remained human, many of the transformed patrons gathered around him.
They didn’t attack him.
Instead, they circled around him, meowing incessantly.
Some wanted to know how he’d managed to stay human.
Others seemed to suspect that he might be the culprit behind everything.
Bai Luo merely glanced at them before quietly concealing his presence.
The next instant, he vanished from the tavern, leaving behind nothing but a bewildered crowd of cats, all staring at one another, unsure what to do.
. . .
Outside the entrance of the Cathedral of Favonius.
Watching the heavy doors slowly close, Lumine wore a complicated expression.
After Amber’s introduction, she had successfully met the highest-ranking authority in the city—the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius.
The conversation had gone smoothly.
At the very least, Lumine had come away with a favorable impression of her.
However, when she asked about that Fatui Harbinger, the Acting Grand Master had clearly been unwilling to discuss the topic any further.
"Y-You’re really going to look for that guy?"
Floating beside Lumine, Paimon looked visibly nervous.
Which was understandable.
She, too, had suffered at Bai Luo’s hands.
The roasted pig incident had involved more Sunsettias than anything else he’d ever done.
Even the gods Bai Luo had encountered had never received treatment quite like that.
Paimon’s fear of Bai Luo had already sunk deep into her bones.
"There are things I have to find out."
Lumine hadn’t told Paimon about her private conversation with Bai Luo.
Until she confirmed that he truly was her brother, she had no intention of telling anyone else.
"But he’s one of the Fatui! A Harbinger, no less!"
"I wasn’t even afraid of a god."
Lumine brushed aside the strands of hair blown across her face by the wind as she gazed at the statue of the Anemo Archon standing in the center of the plaza.
"So why would I be afraid of a Fatui Harbinger?"
As long as she could find her brother again, there was nothing she feared.
"Th-Then... all right. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. That man is really terrifying."
Seeing that Lumine had already made up her mind, Paimon could only give in and accompany her in search of the mysterious Fatui Harbinger.
Even so, she couldn’t help reminding Lumine once again just how frightening Bai Luo was.
"Come to think of it, where are the Fatui staying in the city?"
Stopping at the edge of the plaza, Lumine looked out over the whole of Mondstadt and asked.
Compared to the game, the city here was much larger. She only vaguely remembered the direction of the building where Bai Luo had been staying.
"I’ve heard they’re all at the Goth Grand Hotel. Why don’t we check there?"
Under normal circumstances, Paimon would have been thrilled to visit such a luxurious hotel.
But now, her face was filled with reluctance.
"Don’t worry. I’ll protect you."
"Th-Then... it’s a promise, okay?"
With Paimon leading the way, the two headed toward the Goth Grand Hotel together.
Ever since the Fatui’s operation in Mondstadt had succeeded, Anastasia had withdrawn the guards stationed in the square outside the hotel.
After all, in the eyes of many citizens, the Fatui were now the great heroes who had saved Mondstadt.
Driving ordinary people away at a time like this would only leave the people of Mondstadt with a bad impression.
That said, the hotel’s own security remained just as strict as ever.
"Please don’t come any closer. If you need something, you can tell me."
Perhaps because his chair-chewing incident had somehow been appreciated, Luke had ultimately managed to keep his job guarding the entrance.
Of course, the chair he’d chewed to pieces was still being deducted from his salary.
"Um... we’re looking for someone. Your Harbinger—the Ausbilder."
Looking at the Fatui guard, who didn’t seem particularly bright, the mouth of the thing floating beside Lumine—Paimon—spoke first.
The only response she received was Luke’s silence.
Why is it always people looking for Lord Harbinger?!
What am I supposed to do this time? Let them in?
But what if they’re just ordinary people? If I casually lets them inside, I’m done for.
On the other hand... if they really do know Lord Harbinger... then I’ll end up embarrassing myself again.
"Hey! Can’t you understand us? We’re looking for your Harbinger!"
Seeing that Luke hadn’t answered, Paimon repeated herself.
This time, however, Luke didn’t remain silent.
After carefully weighing his options, he came up with what he considered the perfect answer.
"My Lord Harbinger... isn’t here."
