‘To Reap.’ Sylas said calmly.
Control could mean a lot of things.
Sylas swiped his scythe through the air. The wind almost screeched in separating as though the whines and tears of billions were streaking across it.
Control could mean sitting at the peak and looking down on everything there was. But even that could come in differing flavors. It was possible to sit on such a throne by an iron fist alone, or maybe to sit upon it through the force of one’s intelligence, or one’s wealth, or one’s charisma.
This was one path that could separate into many, a continuous stream of possibilities down just a single setting.
But there were other forms of it.
When Sylas first stepped into this new world, that was all he wanted. Control. He had never defined it himself, but back on Earth, he had thought himself to have firmly grasped it.
He had never felt insecure on Earth, never like he was in any danger, never like there was a single thing he could ever want that was truly out of his reach.
So, back on Earth, the only improvement he sought was self improvement. How to run a mile just a little bit faster, how to dial in his sleep just a little bit better, how to eat just a little bit healthier.
When he felt like the entire world was already in his palms, the only thing left to do was focus on himself. That was all he had ever cared about… But this world, this world was very different.
That ceiling even he didn’t know if he could ever breach was constantly looming over him.
Then there was the Knight behind Champion Will, the Monkey King behind the Pride of Virtue, even the World Serpent Gentrixaul who he could only linger in the belly of a creature so large even the orbit of the system’s Hibernation Realm deemed it no different from a world of its own.
Had his future self even been able to defeat the Monkey King? Sylas, quite frankly, didn’t know. He hadn’t needed to defeat the Monkey King, he only needed to distract him just long enough that his connection to the future would be severed and he could eke out a victory in the present.
There were so many powerful individuals, so many tall mountains to climb, so many challenges to clear, that Sylas didn’t know if even he would be capable of reaching those heights.
What he was lacking right now was exactly what he had had such an abundance of back on Earth.
Control.
Any day could mean his death, and even if it wasn’t death, it could mean humiliation, a stain on his Pride, his heart. It could mean the loss of a loved one or the severing of a dream.
Any one of those things was unacceptable to him.
What he sought the most was the regaining of that Control, but not the sort of control that necessitated he sit atop a throne looking down on everyone… He wanted a level of Control that came from no one but himself, a Control that told him that he could handle any situation, at any time, regardless of the circumstances.
‘A Control that Harvests when its crops are ripe and not a moment before, a Reaper who claims a life well lived or ill-received, a blade that acts by a Will that supersedes all.’
Chi. Chi. Chi.
Sylas’ gliding blade caused sparks to flare on a far off horizon. And as space, and then time, and then even the void itself was split in two, a familiar crimson lightning appeared dancing across its surface, causing the Grim Blade to crack continuously.
Sylas stopped. ‘Not yet, it seems. But one day. For now, it will be enough.’
In Sylas’ Comprehension slot, something new was silently born.

Sylas had only barely looked when he felt another shift within him.
[Madness (Legendary (E))] – Progenitor
[The Madness consumes you, but does not control you. Instead, it becomes your tool to both control yourself and others. You, while steeped in Madness, maintain your wits about you. Your enemies, though, are not so lucky] [+5000% Charisma]
[+5000% Will]
[Arcane Madness Will]
It seemed that there was no better way to comprehend yourself than to grasp your Dao.
If Sylas kept his Dao in sharp focus… there shouldn’t be a need to reform his Madness Comprehension at every tier.
If he could progress to the next tiers without the system, that is… The question was, if he was no longer an Overlord, and would no longer have the system’s help in progressing… Then how would he progress his Classes?
‘By taking what’s mine.’
Sylas walked forward and crouched in front of Nosphaleen. She was still heavily injured, and though the Hibernation Realm was helping, it would still take her some time.
Still, Sylas could tell she had broken free of something.
She, too, seemed to have grasped a Dao.
Sylas reached a hand forward.
Nosphaleen was a bit startled by Sylas’ gesture, though maybe just as startled by the fact he wasn’t wearing any clothes. Having your body completely dissolved by corrosive blood wasn’t exactly the best situation for either your flesh or clothing.
“You wanted to go out, right?” Sylas asked.
Nosphaleen blinked but nodded.
“Let’s go, then.”
Nosphaleen wasn’t sure, or maybe she didn’t dare to be sure… but she could have sworn she saw just the slightest quirk of Sylas’ lip.
Was that… a smile?
Her heart threatened to beat right out of her chest. But before she could understand, a surging of energy rushed into her.
She barely registered the fact that this had to be excess energy from the death of the Hydra. She wanted to ask Sylas why he was giving her such a valuable thing, but he was already taking a step forward, spatial runes flickering around him as a new set of clothing took shape.
In a flash, he had stepped outside of his Hibernation Realm.
Instantly a pair of yellow slit eyes snapped open as a lurking A-tier beast lunged.
