Chapter 116: Roll system

“And here I thought I was supposed to be the healer,” Mel said in a teasing tone before raising her own hand to Black Dragoon and saying, “Healing Spirit,” twice, which fully restored Black Dragoon's health.

John smirked while answering, “I never said my class was only a tank.”

“You're far more interesting than I was expecting, Vincarna,” Emberslag said with a smile before looking around the group and asking. "Everyone ok with the roll system?"

"Yup," Shelur replied while Mel and Black Dragoon nodded.

John, however, wore a confused expression before asking, “Roll system?”

“Seriously?” Shelur asked in surprise. “I know they treated you like shit, but didn’t they teach you anything about Genesis?”

“It was more like I didn’t bother to pay attention,” John explained. “Because of my situation back then, I never planned to even enter Genesis. It’s only recently that I have been trying to catch up on what I missed, but well, you know, eleven years of knowledge is not something I can read up on in a little over a week.”

“Shit, sorry,” Shelur replied with an apologetic look. “I meant no offence.”

“It’s cool,” John replied before staring at Mel and saying. “You're not the first to ask me that.”

Mel, however, pretended not to notice the stare and instead asked Shelur, “I don’t remember you being this polite to us earlier. What changed?”

“Hmph,” Shelur pouted while turning her head away before she said. “I learnt about his past and therefore don't believe he's like other humans. You, on the other hand, I'm still not sure about, though I suppose you can't be all bad if Vincarna trusts you after what he's been through.”

“Aww, Shelur, that was almost a compliment.” Emberslag teased before turning to John to explain. "There are two main loot distribution systems that parties can choose from in Genesis, the first being the roll system we will use. When we check the body, every party member will see what is available in that enemy's loot table. The rank of the enemy determines how much loot there is to dish out to the party and what rank the loot is.

For each item, you have the option to roll or pass. If you select roll, you will compete against other party members who also selected roll, and the highest number out of one hundred is the winner. If no one selected roll, then the loot gets randomly assigned to a party member.

If you select pass, however, you are declaring your disinterest in that item, and so if there is a roll, you will no longer be part of it. If everyone selects pass, then the loot gets randomly assigned to a party member. Are you following?”

"I am," John said with a nod, to which Emberslag smiled and continued.

"The other loot option is called leaders' choice. This is normally what guilds use in higher-level end dungeons and raids; it basically means the party leader gets to determine who gets what loot."

John frowned before asking in an uncertain tone, "Couldn't the party leader decide to keep everything for themselves?"

"They could, and according to Sarah, it happens a lot if the loot is really good, or there is a super top-quality item and the leader's greed gets the better of them. Normally, if that happens, the leader will get a bad rep, though, and the party will fall apart." Mel replied before Emberslag could say anything.

Only guilds like Natures Guardian's Followers, which you we met when we went to help Alea, are made up of players who follow one person and are not affected by the leader keeping everything."

Upon hearing Mel’s explanation, Black Dragoon showed a look of disgust while asking, “Ugh, you’ve met that guy, huh?”

“Who?” Shelur asked in confusion.

“He’s basically Alea’s version of Yagnar,” Emberslag replied, causing Shelur to mirror Black Dragoon's look of disgust.

“Those with him at the time seemed to have decent enough gear though,” John said thoughtfully.

“True, but he also said that they were his party, so he probably prioritises them over the other guild members, and don’t forget the rumour that Alea told us about him,” Mel replied before continuing. “While players get their first-level skills free for their class, second-level skills cost at least one gold each, and that's only for the basic ones; and as the skill level increases, so too does the cost. A player like Natures Guardian, who does not like to share except with his closest people, would not give his lower-level followers much."

"I guess elves aren’t that much different from humans in that regard; they just follow him because of his father's position in elf society?" John replied as he was reminded of how the bullies back in school used to follow Dean Thomas around.

"Pretty much every race has situations like that, even my own," Black Dragoon answered. "Everyone wants to be better off; even the elves, who are known as the most diplomatic and neutral of the races, have different tiers of society, such as the common, the wealthy, the powerful, so on and so forth, and it's only natural for people to want to move up and live a more comfortable life. I expect most of the members of Natures Guardian's Followers think this is the best way to improve their lot in life."

"Anyway, enough of this topic; it's time for loot," Emberslag announced before she bent down and touched Hedgal’s corpse, since he was closest to them.

[Available loot from Hedgal:]

[Hook Dagger]

[Rank: Uncommon (Green)]

[Main Hand Dagger]

[P ATP: 25]

[STR: 3]

[Requires Level: 15]

[Bandit Clinch]

[Rank: Uncommon (Green)]

[Leather]

[Waist]

[DEF: 4]

[SPI: 5]

[Requires Level: 15]

[Quest Item: Bandit Insignia automatically awarded]

[Quest Update]

[Bandit Insignias: 1/25]

"Only two items?" John asked in surprise

"Yeah, that's pretty standard for normal rank enemies," Emberslag replied before asking. "I'm guessing you never killed an NPC before?"

John shook his head before indicating Mel and himself while saying, "Only a sorcerer called Eler Cahro, but we got transported immediately after and didn’t get a chance to loot the corpse.”

"Ah, that explains it,” Emberslag said while nodding in understanding. “The way NPC kill loot works is different to player kill loot. When you kill a player you attacked first, the system automatically selects the loot you will receive; however, when you kill a player who attacked you first, you can select any one item from their loot table. This loot table normally includes everything they're carrying except money, which you automatically take ten percent off, soulbound items, miscellaneous items such as gathering and crafting tools and quest items."

“Yeah, I already figured most of that out, though I didn’t know you got ten percent of their money,” John replied before Emberslag continued. "NPCs are different; to stop the Genesis economy from being flooded with gear and loot, the number of item choices available is determined by the rank of the npc like I mentioned before.

Normal-rank NPCs like these four will normally only give us one or two items to roll or pass on, as well as any quest items, such as the insignia we automatically got."

"Okay, so basically I select either roll or pass on these two items, right?" John asked,

"Yup, though thinking about it, what armour can your class even equip?”

“Err, I have no idea,” John replied.

“Considering it's called Warden, and you can tank, I’m guessing you can probably wear everything, including mail armour like my dragoon class,” Black Dragoon stated.

“Makes sense,” John replied before looking at the other three and asking, “What armour can your classes wear?”

“Leather,” Mel replied.

“Cloth,” Shelur answered.

“Leather, though at higher levels I can learn a passive that allows me to wear mail,” Emberslag explained before continuing. “I suggest you roll on everything you need and pass on that which you don’t need.”

Black Dragoon smiled before suggesting, “Try and win the dagger so that you can swap out that staff when you hit level fifteen.”

“Good luck with that; I’m aiming for it,” Mel said with a smirk as John selected to roll for both items.

"Five and Seven?" John asked with a crooked smile while the women chuckled, and Shelur teasingly asked. “What kind of luck do you have?”

"Don't stress; these things happen. Let's check the next corpse." Emberslag said before moving over to the next closest corpse belonging to Folwin and touching it.
