Chapter 152: Chapter 152 - The Seven Path

The academy returned to its usual rhythm after the discovery beneath the oldest training hall. Orion had ordered the sealed chamber left untouched, and for several days, nobody was permitted to enter the underground section without his approval. To most students, nothing had changed. Classes continued, training grounds remained busy from sunrise until evening, and the researchers went about their work as though another ancient mystery had not just been uncovered beneath their feet.

For Azrael and Seraphina, however, those days became an opportunity to focus on something they had neglected for too long: improving their actual combat abilities.

They spent the first morning on the eastern training field, where several reinforced targets had been arranged across the grass. Azrael stood with Astraeus resting against his shoulder while Seraphina faced him with her staff in hand.

Marcus, Ryan, and Elena watched from the edge of the field.

Ryan folded his arms. "So what’s today’s lesson?"

Azrael glanced at Seraphina. "No special abilities."

Seraphina nodded. "No Oblivion, no Genesis techniques beyond the minimum needed to keep the training field intact."

Marcus stared at them. "You’re telling me you two are actually going to fight normally?"

"That’s the idea," Seraphina replied.

Elena smiled faintly. "Then this might actually be interesting."

Azrael lowered Astraeus and settled into a relaxed stance. Without Resonance Sight, he could no longer anticipate every movement by reading the subtle changes around Seraphina. Without Oblivion, he could not simply end an attack by cutting through its underlying structure.

Seraphina faced the same limitation. Genesis could no longer compensate for every mistake, and she could not simply overwhelm an opponent by flooding the battlefield with life energy.

They had to rely on their bodies, their weapons, their instincts, and everything they had learned through experience.

Seraphina moved first.

Her staff swept toward Azrael’s shoulder, and he blocked it with Astraeus. The impact pushed him half a step backward. He immediately rotated his sword and attempted a counterattack, but Seraphina twisted away and struck toward his ribs.

Azrael caught the staff with the flat of his blade.

Their weapons locked.

Seraphina smiled. "You’re thinking too much."

"So are you."

She laughed and suddenly released the pressure.

Azrael nearly stumbled forward before realizing the movement had been intentional. Seraphina used the opening to sweep his legs.

He jumped over the attack and landed several meters away.

Marcus whistled. "They’re getting harder to follow."

Elena nodded. "Because neither of them is relying on their strongest abilities."

The spar continued for nearly an hour.

Neither twin gained a decisive advantage.

Azrael’s swordsmanship had become more efficient after his training beyond the Thirteenth Gate, but Seraphina’s adaptability allowed her to change rhythm whenever he became comfortable with her movements. At the same time, Azrael had learned to stop depending on prediction. Instead of trying to know what she would do, he responded to what was actually happening.

Eventually, both stopped.

Their breathing was heavier, and sweat covered their clothes, but neither had suffered more than a few minor bruises.

Seraphina lowered her staff. "Draw?"

Azrael nodded. "Draw."

Marcus immediately raised both hands. "Finally. A battle between you two that doesn’t destroy half the academy."

Ryan laughed. "Give them time."

Azrael sheathed Astraeus. "The point wasn’t winning."

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Then what was the point?"

"Finding out what remains when our strongest abilities aren’t available."

Seraphina looked at him and nodded. "And I think we found something important."

She glanced toward the distant training targets.

"We’re stronger than we were before, even without Genesis or Oblivion."

That realization was simple, but it mattered.

Their abilities had grown powerful enough that it would have been easy to let them become the foundation of everything they did. Yet strength built entirely around one overwhelming power could become a weakness if that power was unavailable, restrained, or simply inappropriate for the situation.

The twins had begun learning how to fight without depending on the very abilities that made them exceptional.

That was progress.

Later that afternoon, Orion summoned the twins to the academy’s research wing.

Several ancient documents had been spread across a large wooden table. Unlike the previous records they had found beneath the eastern village, these documents were much older and considerably more damaged. Some were written in languages nobody at the academy could identify.

Orion stood beside the table with a serious expression.

"We found something."

Azrael looked at the documents. "About the chamber?"

"Not directly."

Orion pointed toward a circular diagram.

Seven lines extended from the outer edge toward a small empty circle at the center.

"This symbol appeared in three separate records."

Seraphina studied it carefully. "The Convergence."

Orion nodded. "Exactly."

One of the researchers turned another page.

"There’s something else."

The next illustration showed seven large structures positioned around a central point. Unlike the eastern network, the drawing did not depict roads or underground channels. Each structure appeared to have its own independent pathway.

Azrael studied the arrangement.

"They weren’t connected."

"That’s what we believe," Orion said. "At least, not directly."

Seraphina pointed to the center. "And this?"

"We don’t know."

Azrael remained silent for several seconds.

The center wasn’t marked with Genesis, Oblivion, or any recognizable energy signature. It was simply empty.

That emptiness bothered him more than a symbol would have.

Not because it felt dangerous.

Because it looked deliberate.

One of the researchers carefully opened another fragment.

Only a few words remained intact.

Seven preserve the pathways.

The next line had been almost completely destroyed.

Then another sentence appeared beneath it.

The center preserves...

The rest was missing.

Seraphina frowned. "Choice."

Orion looked at her.

"You think that’s what it says?"

"No. I think that’s what we’ve already learned."

Azrael nodded. "The center isn’t another power. It’s the reason the seven paths exist."

Orion considered the statement before closing the document.

"We don’t have enough information to prove that."

"Then we shouldn’t force an answer," Seraphina said.

The researcher looked surprised. "You’re not curious?"

Seraphina smiled. "Of course I am."

Azrael glanced at her.

"But curiosity doesn’t mean we have to touch everything we discover."

Orion gave a quiet approving laugh.

"That is probably the most sensible thing either of you has said about an ancient artifact."

Marcus, who had somehow followed them into the research wing despite not being invited, leaned against the doorway.

"I heard that."

Orion sighed. "You weren’t invited."

"I know."

Ryan appeared behind him. "He said there might be food."

"There isn’t," Orion replied.

Ryan immediately disappeared.

Elena walked past him. "Cowards."

The tension in the room eased, and even Azrael smiled.

For all the ancient records and hidden structures they had encountered, moments like this reminded them why they were still living ordinary lives between their extraordinary discoveries.

They were students.

They had friends.

They had people who would complain when they disappeared for too long.

And that mattered.

That evening, Azrael and Seraphina returned to the garden behind the academy.

The sky was clear, and the last sunlight rested across the trees. Seraphina sat beneath one of the larger branches while Azrael practiced slow sword movements nearby.

There was no combat target.

No opponent.

He simply repeated the same motion until it became natural.

Seraphina watched him for a while.

"You’ve changed your swordsmanship."

Azrael stopped.

"How?"

"You don’t force the movement anymore."

He looked at Astraeus.

"Maybe I finally understand what Master meant."

Seraphina smiled. "The stone was never the lesson."

"Exactly."

He resumed his practice.

This time, there was no resonance flowing through the blade and no Oblivion gathering around it. Just a swordsman and his weapon.

Seraphina closed her eyes and placed one hand against the grass.

A faint golden light spread beneath her palm, but she didn’t force anything to grow. She simply felt the plants beneath the soil, sensing which roots were healthy, which were struggling, and which had naturally reached their end.

She withdrew her hand without changing them.

Azrael glanced over.

"You didn’t heal them."

"No."

"Why?"

Seraphina opened her eyes.

"Because they didn’t need me to."

Azrael smiled.

They had both spent so much time learning how to use their powers that it had taken them a while to understand when not to use them.

Their strength was no longer measured only by what they could destroy or create.

Sometimes it was measured by what they could leave untouched.

The evening passed quietly.

Eventually, Seraphina stood and brushed the dirt from her clothes.

"Tomorrow?"

Azrael sheathed Astraeus.

"Tomorrow."

They walked back toward the academy together.

Neither knew what the Seven Thrones truly were, what the Convergence had been created for, or why the ancient paths had once separated Genesis and Oblivion.

For once, they were content to let those questions remain unanswered.

They had abilities to master, people to protect, and a life to live before the next answer found them.
