Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System
Chapter 141 – The Road of Resonance
Chapter 141: Chapter 141 – The Road of Resonance
Morning came quietly to the small settlement beyond the eastern forest. The villagers had already gathered around the old well by the time Orion and the researchers arrived, keeping a respectful distance from the stone rim while the instruments placed around it continued recording the strange fluctuations beneath the ground. Nothing had happened during the night. The well had glowed faintly for several hours, but the light had never risen beyond the mouth, and the water remained clear and cool.
Orion studied the readings while one of the researchers adjusted a crystal sensor.
"The pattern hasn’t changed," the researcher said. "The energy still moves eastward."
"How far?" Orion asked.
"We’re not certain yet. The signal becomes weaker whenever it leaves the immediate area, but the direction is consistent."
Azrael stood several meters away with Seraphina. He wasn’t looking at the well anymore. His attention was fixed on the hills beyond the village.
"It’s not weaker," he said.
The researcher looked over. "What?"
Azrael pointed toward the horizon. "The resonance is spreading. The instruments are measuring the concentration around the well, but the actual pulse continues much farther."
Seraphina closed her eyes and allowed her perception to extend through the surrounding life. The village was peaceful. Birds had returned to the nearby trees, insects moved through the grass, and the crops surrounding the settlement were beginning to recover from the strange disturbance of the previous days.
Then she felt it.
"There are roots beneath the hills," she said. "A lot of them."
Lyanna immediately approached.
"Roots?"
"Not normal ones." Seraphina opened her eyes. "They’re connected to the same network we’ve been following since the forest."
The researchers quickly gathered around them.
Orion considered the information for several seconds before looking toward the villagers.
"We’ll need to examine the eastern hills."
The village elder stepped forward hesitantly.
"Those hills have always been avoided."
Marcus glanced at him. "Because of monsters?"
The elder shook his head.
"Because nothing grows there."
Ryan frowned. "That’s somehow worse."
A few villagers laughed nervously.
The elder continued, "The soil is fertile everywhere else, but the eastern hills have been barren for generations. My grandfather told me that even wild grass refuses to grow there."
Azrael’s expression became thoughtful.
"That may have changed."
The expedition left the village shortly after sunrise.
This time, Orion kept the group smaller. Several researchers remained behind to monitor the well, while Azrael, Seraphina, Marcus, Ryan, Caelan, Lyanna, Sophia, Elena, and a handful of instructors followed the eastern trail.
The hills were only a few kilometers away, yet the environment changed noticeably as they approached.
The grass became shorter.
Trees became increasingly sparse.
Eventually, even the birds disappeared.
Marcus looked around.
"I think I preferred the forest."
Ryan nodded. "At least the forest had trees."
"That’s usually how forests work."
"I was making a point."
"You were complaining."
"I can do both."
Caelan shook his head as the two continued arguing behind him.
Lyanna, however, wasn’t listening.
She had crouched beside the trail and touched the soil.
"There’s something strange here."
Seraphina walked over.
"What do you feel?"
"Nothing."
Lyanna looked genuinely confused.
"That’s the problem."
She brushed the soil between her fingers.
"There should be some form of life here. Even barren land has microorganisms, insects, roots, something. But this place feels like the land is waiting."
Azrael looked toward the hills.
"Waiting for what?"
Lyanna slowly stood.
"I don’t know."
A faint pulse moved beneath their feet.
This time, everyone felt it.
The ground didn’t shake. There was no explosion or surge of energy. Instead, the sensation was almost like a heartbeat traveling through the earth.
Once.
Then silence.
Seraphina looked toward the eastern hills.
"It responded when we arrived."
Orion’s expression hardened slightly.
"Stay together."
They continued.
The first unusual structure appeared halfway up the largest hill.
It was barely visible beneath layers of dirt and stone. Only a small section of smooth black material protruded from the ground, forming a curved surface that disappeared beneath the hillside.
One of the researchers immediately approached with a detection crystal.
"This material matches the structure beneath the forest."
Orion nodded.
"How deep?"
The researcher activated another instrument.
"We can’t tell."
Azrael crouched beside the exposed surface without touching it.
His perception spread through the material.
He saw the same three forces he had encountered before.
Genesis.
Oblivion.
Choice.
But this time they weren’t arranged around a doorway.
They were moving.
The golden energy traveled through one section of the structure. Black energy moved through another. Between them ran the strange colorless presence that neither created nor destroyed anything.
All three flowed toward the same direction.
East.
Azrael slowly stood.
"This isn’t another chamber."
Seraphina looked at him.
"What is it?"
"A road."
The researchers stared at him.
"A road?"
Azrael nodded.
"Not one built for people. The structures, roots, wells, and everything we’ve found are connected. They’re carrying the resonance from one place to another."
Seraphina’s eyes widened slightly.
"So the forest wasn’t the destination."
"No."
Azrael looked toward the distant horizon.
"Neither was the village."
Orion immediately understood.
"The resonance has been traveling this entire time."
"And whatever it’s traveling toward..." Seraphina murmured, "...has been receiving it."
The researchers spent the next several hours mapping the exposed structure.
They discovered that it extended beneath the entire hill, then continued toward the east. The path wasn’t perfectly straight. It curved around mountains, passed beneath valleys, and occasionally disappeared completely before resurfacing several kilometers away.
It was enormous.
Far larger than anything they had initially imagined.
Caelan helped map the direction while Lyanna studied the strange absence of vegetation. Sophia and Elena searched the surrounding area for wildlife, discovering something unexpected: small animals were beginning to return to the barren hills.
A few birds landed on distant stones.
Tiny insects appeared between cracks in the soil.
Even a thin strand of green grass had begun growing beside the exposed structure.
Seraphina knelt beside it.
The grass was fragile, but alive.
She gently touched one blade.
Genesis energy flowed through her fingertips.
Instead of rapidly growing, the grass simply straightened.
Its color became slightly brighter.
Then the energy stopped.
Seraphina smiled.
"It doesn’t need me."
Azrael watched her.
"That’s the point."
She looked at him.
"The land is recovering on its own."
"Because something changed."
Seraphina looked across the barren hillside.
"Then maybe whatever is happening isn’t destroying this place."
Azrael nodded.
"It’s changing it."
By late afternoon, the researchers had enough information to report back to the academy.
Orion gathered everyone near the exposed structure.
"We’re not going farther today."
Marcus looked toward the horizon.
"But we finally know where the resonance is going."
"Knowing the direction isn’t the same as understanding what we’ll find," Orion replied. "We have enough evidence to justify a larger expedition. We don’t have enough evidence to justify walking into an unknown structure several kilometers underground."
Ryan raised a hand.
"I would like it officially recorded that I support the second option."
Elena laughed.
"You support staying alive."
"Exactly."
Orion ignored them and looked at Azrael and Seraphina.
"Anything else?"
Azrael remained silent for a moment.
Then he looked at the exposed black stone.
"The resonance isn’t calling us."
Seraphina nodded.
"It’s following its own path."
"And it’s changing everything it passes through."
Orion’s expression became thoughtful.
"Then we’ll follow it carefully."
He turned toward the village.
"Tomorrow, we’ll return to the academy with the data we’ve gathered. I’ll request a larger expedition and additional researchers. Until then, nobody touches this structure."
Everyone agreed.
As the group began descending the hill, Seraphina looked back one last time.
The barren land had not become fertile.
Not yet.
But beside the ancient black structure, a handful of tiny green shoots had appeared where nothing had grown for generations.
She smiled faintly.
"Azrael."
He stopped.
"What?"
She pointed toward the hill.
"Look."
Azrael followed her gaze.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then another pulse traveled beneath the earth.
This time, it carried no warning.
No question.
Only movement.
Far beyond the eastern hills, something had shifted.
And somewhere along the hidden road beneath the earth, another part of the ancient network had begun to respond.
The expedition turned back toward the village, carrying maps, measurements, and more questions than answers.
But for the first time since the resonance appeared, they finally understood one thing.
They weren’t following an awakening.
They were following a path.
