Morning arrived quietly at the eastern observation station, but nobody treated the day as ordinary. The previous night’s response had changed the nature of the expedition. What had begun as an investigation into unexplained fluctuations had become something far more specific: there was a buried structure beneath the forest, something alive was connected to it, and the structure had reacted specifically to the presence of Azrael and Seraphina.

The camp was already active when the twins emerged from their tents. Researchers moved between monitoring formations while instructors checked the protective barriers surrounding the station. Marcus was helping carry equipment, although his expression suggested that he considered the task beneath him.

"I thought expeditions were supposed to involve fighting monsters," he complained.

Ryan carried another box beside him. "You said yesterday that you wanted a peaceful expedition."

"I said I wanted a peaceful expedition after we found something dangerous."

"You can’t change the conditions afterward."

Marcus sighed. "You’re becoming very annoying."

"I’ve always been annoying."

Caelan laughed as he walked past them. "At least he’s honest."

Near the center of the camp, Orion gathered the expedition members around a large table. Several maps and sheets of measurements had been placed across its surface, showing the area beneath the eastern forest.

"We’re not going to force the structure open," Orion said. "Our objective today is to understand what surrounds it and determine whether there is any safe way to investigate the interior."

Azrael studied the map carefully. The researchers had marked the location where the buried structure had been discovered, along with the unusual root network surrounding it.

"The roots form several layers around the structure."

The researcher standing beside him nodded. "We’ve confirmed that. Their density increases as they approach the center, but that’s not the strangest part."

He pointed toward several readings.

"They’re carrying energy."

Seraphina leaned closer. "From the structure?"

"We believe so."

She examined the numbers for a moment before asking, "And the life signatures?"

"They’re returning."

Everyone looked up.

"The wildlife?"

"Some of it. We detected small animals near the outer edge of the forest early this morning. Nothing has approached the center yet, but the displacement is reversing."

Seraphina smiled faintly. "Then whatever happened last night didn’t harm the ecosystem."

"That is what we’re hoping," Orion replied. "But we still don’t know why the forest reacted in the first place."

Azrael looked at the map again.

"Then we’ll find out by following the roots."

Orion nodded. "Carefully."

The expedition moved into the forest shortly afterward. This time, the researchers carried equipment specifically designed to map the underground structure without disturbing it. The instructors established protective formations around the group while Marcus, Ryan, Caelan, Lyanna, Sophia, and Elena helped mark their route so nobody would become separated.

The deeper they traveled, the more obvious the changes in the vegetation became. The unnatural circular growth from the previous day extended much farther than they had initially realized. Trees near the outer perimeter were beginning to regain signs of ordinary life, while the plants closer to the buried structure remained strangely uniform.

Birds had begun returning to the outer portions of the forest, and occasionally the group could hear the rustling of small animals moving through the undergrowth. The change was subtle, but Seraphina noticed every bit of it.

"The forest is recovering faster than I expected."

Sophia looked toward a branch where a small bird had landed. "That’s a good thing, isn’t it?"

"It is."

Seraphina smiled as the bird flew away. "Whatever is beneath us, it doesn’t appear to be poisoning the environment."

Azrael glanced toward the ground. "It may be doing the opposite."

Seraphina looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"I don’t know yet."

That answer was enough to make her curious.

After another few minutes, Azrael stopped beside one of the larger roots extending from a nearby tree.

"This one wasn’t here yesterday."

Caelan looked at it. "How can you tell?"

"The resonance."

Azrael placed his hand against the root, and a faint vibration traveled through his palm. The sensation was subtle, almost impossible to notice without his perception.

"It grew overnight."

Seraphina touched the same root and closed her eyes. A moment later, her expression changed.

"It’s alive."

Marcus crouched nearby. "It’s a root. Of course it’s alive."

Seraphina shook her head. "That’s not what I mean."

She opened her eyes and looked toward the others. "This root is carrying energy from the structure into the forest."

The researcher immediately checked his equipment.

"She’s right."

The device displayed a faint but consistent energy current traveling through the root.

Azrael followed its direction with his perception.

"The structure isn’t only gathering energy anymore."

Seraphina looked at him.

"It’s distributing it."

The discovery changed the group’s understanding of what they were observing. The buried structure wasn’t simply a source of strange fluctuations. It appeared to be connected to the surrounding ecosystem, drawing in scattered energy and then returning some of it through the enormous root network.

The researchers began mapping the flow.

For the next several hours, the expedition moved carefully through the forest, documenting each major root and the direction of the energy passing through it. The work was slow, but it produced something valuable: a map of the underground structure.

Marcus and Ryan soon found themselves carrying measuring equipment from one location to another while Elena supervised their route.

Marcus looked at the device in his hands. "Why are we doing all the difficult work?"

Elena didn’t even look at him. "Because you’re strong enough to carry it."

"That’s terrible reasoning."

"It’s effective reasoning."

Ryan nodded. "I support her."

Marcus stared at him. "You’re carrying one too."

"Exactly. We’re sharing the suffering."

Lyanna laughed while Caelan continued marking their position on the map.

Despite the complaints, the group worked efficiently. The expedition wasn’t simply about the twins anymore. Everyone contributed to the investigation, and by midday, the researchers had gathered enough information to reconstruct the basic shape of what lay beneath the forest.

"It isn’t a single chamber," one of them said.

Orion leaned over the map. "What do you mean?"

"There are several sections beneath the central circle. We originally thought the structure was fifty meters wide, but that’s only the uppermost portion. There are passages extending much deeper."

Marcus stared at the map.

"So there is a way down."

"Possibly."

Azrael studied the underground measurements. Several of the passages seemed to converge toward the center, but the readings became increasingly unclear the deeper they went.

"Something is interfering with the instruments."

The researcher nodded. "The farther down we scan, the weaker the readings become."

Seraphina placed her hand over the map.

"I can feel something."

Everyone became quiet.

She concentrated for several seconds.

"Not clearly. It’s too deep."

Azrael looked at her.

"Alive?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

The group continued until Azrael suddenly stopped.

"There."

He pointed toward a narrow section beneath the root network.

The researchers adjusted their instruments.

A faint reading appeared.

"What is that?"

Azrael remained focused.

"An opening."

Orion immediately ordered the group toward the location.

They found it beneath an enormous tree whose roots had grown around a section of dark stone. Unlike the rest of the buried structure, this part had been exposed slightly by the movement of the roots.

There was no doorway.

No inscription.

Only a narrow circular depression in the stone.

Seraphina crouched beside it.

"This feels different."

Azrael nodded.

"Yes."

She placed her hand near the depression without touching it.

A gentle warmth spread through the air.

Then the stone responded.

A thin golden line appeared.

Azrael stepped closer, and a black line formed beside it.

For several seconds, the two energies remained separate.

Then a third, colorless line appeared between them.

The same three forces.

Genesis.

Oblivion.

Choice.

Nobody touched the stone.

Yet the depression slowly filled with light.

Orion raised one hand.

"Everyone step back."

The group obeyed immediately.

The light continued spreading across the stone, tracing a pattern that neither the researchers nor the instructors recognized. The golden, black, and colorless energies did not clash. Instead, they moved around one another in perfect balance.

Azrael watched carefully.

"It isn’t reacting to our power."

Seraphina nodded.

"It’s reacting to what we represent."

The distinction was important.

The structure wasn’t simply detecting energy. It was recognizing the relationship between the three forces.

A faint vibration traveled through the ground, and the enormous roots surrounding the area shifted aside by themselves.

A circular opening appeared.

Beneath it was a staircase.

Marcus stared down into the darkness.

"Well..."

Ryan immediately shook his head.

"No."

Marcus looked at him. "I didn’t even say anything."

"You were about to."

Caelan laughed.

Even Orion allowed himself a faint smile before his expression became serious again.

"We are not descending today."

Marcus’s shoulders dropped. "Why?"

"Because we still don’t know what is waiting below."

Orion looked toward Azrael and Seraphina. "And because the structure opened without us forcing it. That means we have time to prepare."

Azrael agreed.

"The master would say the same."

Seraphina smiled. "Listen before you act."

Azrael nodded.

"Exactly."

The researchers photographed the entrance and recorded its energy signature while the instructors established a protective formation around it. No one entered the staircase.

The decision frustrated Marcus, but even he understood the reasoning. Their previous expeditions had taught them that discovering an unknown structure and understanding it were two completely different things. They had no idea how deep the staircase went, what kind of environment existed below, or whether the living presence Seraphina had sensed was capable of communicating or defending itself.

Before they left, however, Seraphina looked down into the darkness.

She could feel the life signature again.

It was stronger here.

Whatever was alive beneath the forest was much closer now.

"Azrael."

He turned toward her.

"It’s still there."

"I know."

"Do you think it knows we’re here?"

Azrael looked into the darkness for several seconds.

"Yes."

Neither of them could explain why they were certain.

But they were.

As the group began returning toward the observation station, Azrael looked back one last time. The entrance remained open, but nothing emerged from the darkness. There was no threat, no attack, and no demand for them to enter.

That, more than anything, made the discovery difficult to understand.

It was almost as though whatever existed below was willing to wait.

The expedition returned to the station before sunset, carrying their maps and measurements with them. Orion immediately sent a report to the academy requesting additional researchers, stronger detection equipment, and specialists familiar with ancient structures.

The discovery would require a larger expedition.

For now, the staircase remained sealed behind them.

Yet as the group disappeared into the distance, a faint golden light appeared deep beneath the forest.

A second light emerged beside it, black and silent.

Between them, a colorless glow slowly formed.

Then all three faded together, leaving the buried structure once again in darkness.
