Chapter 130: Chapter 130 – A Quiet Day

The academy had returned to normal by the following morning.

At least, that was what it looked like from the outside.

Students filled the training grounds, instructors resumed their lessons, and merchants moved through the academy district as they always did. The northern expedition had already become the subject of countless rumors, but nobody outside the expedition knew the full story.

Azrael and Seraphina were perfectly content to leave it that way.

They had barely finished breakfast when Marcus dropped into the seat beside them.

"So, what are we doing today?"

Ryan sat across from him. "Sleeping."

Marcus ignored him.

"I’m serious. We’ve spent weeks dealing with ruins, monsters, underground cities, and whatever else keeps following these two around."

He pointed toward Azrael and Seraphina.

"Today should be peaceful."

Seraphina smiled. "I agree."

Azrael nodded. "Training."

Marcus stared at him.

"That’s not peaceful."

"It is for me."

Ryan sighed. "I knew it."

Caelan joined them a moment later, followed by Lyanna, Sophia, and Elena. They had barely settled down before Marcus repeated his complaint.

"We need an actual day off."

Lyanna crossed her arms. "You spent half the journey home talking about how much you missed training."

"That was before I remembered how exhausting training is."

Sophia laughed. "You really are impossible."

Their conversation continued for several minutes until Caelan finally looked toward Azrael.

"Are you planning to investigate the northern mountain again?"

"Not yet."

Caelan seemed relieved.

"Good. Orion made it clear that the academy will handle the next expedition."

Azrael nodded. "We’ll wait."

Seraphina glanced at him.

"You sound almost disappointed."

"I’m not."

"You are."

Azrael looked at her.

"I simply want to understand what we felt beneath the Heart."

Seraphina smiled. "And you will. Eventually."

He didn’t argue.

For once, they had agreed to leave a question unanswered.

Later that morning, Azrael entered the training grounds alone.

He hadn’t forgotten Marcus’s demand for a peaceful day. He simply had a different definition of peace.

The training area was mostly empty. A few students practiced nearby, but none approached him after recognizing Astraeus at his side.

Azrael drew the sword and moved through several forms of the Astraeus Sword Art.

His movements were controlled and economical. He wasn’t trying to increase his strength. Instead, he focused on the feeling beneath each motion.

The sword had resonance.

The ground had resonance.

Even the air carried a subtle rhythm.

His old master’s words returned to him.

The weapon is an extension of understanding.

Azrael slowed.

He had spent a long time thinking about Oblivion as an opposing force to Genesis.

But that wasn’t what the Heart had shown him.

Creation and ending were not enemies.

They were parts of a greater cycle.

Choice was what allowed someone to determine how those forces should be used.

He lowered Astraeus.

"Then Oblivion isn’t simply destruction."

A quiet voice answered from behind him.

"You’re finally figuring that out?"

Azrael turned.

Seraphina stood several meters away, carrying her staff.

He raised an eyebrow.

"How long have you been there?"

"Long enough."

"You could have said something."

"You looked busy."

She walked toward him.

"Besides, I wanted to see whether you’d eventually reach the same conclusion without me explaining it."

Azrael gave her a look.

"You sound like our old master."

Seraphina smiled.

"I’ll take that as a compliment."

She stopped beside him and looked at Astraeus.

"You’re treating the sword differently."

"I am."

"Why?"

Azrael considered the question.

"Because I’m beginning to understand what it means to end something."

Seraphina’s expression softened.

"Something doesn’t always need to be destroyed because it’s broken."

Azrael nodded.

"Sometimes it has simply reached the end of what it was meant to become."

"And sometimes it needs to be healed."

"Exactly."

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The two paths were different, but neither needed to dominate the other.

That was something they had understood only recently.

A commotion suddenly came from the far side of the training grounds.

Azrael and Seraphina turned.

A group of younger students had gathered around a training formation. One of the formation stones had cracked, causing several energy patterns to flicker dangerously.

An instructor hurried toward them.

"Everyone move back!"

The formation released a burst of unstable energy.

Several students stumbled away.

Seraphina immediately raised her staff.

"Genesis Bloom."

Golden light spread across the ground.

Instead of destroying the unstable energy, she redirected it into the surrounding formation. The damaged stone stopped vibrating.

Azrael stepped forward and placed his hand against the formation.

He felt its resonance.

"Don’t repair the stone."

Seraphina looked at him.

"It’s carrying too much energy."

"Right."

Azrael guided the excess energy toward the cracked section.

The fracture widened.

Then the stone finally broke apart.

The formation immediately stabilized.

The students stared.

One of them looked confused.

"But the stone broke."

The instructor examined the formation.

"He’s right. The stone was causing the instability."

Seraphina smiled.

"Sometimes fixing something means removing what can no longer support it."

Azrael glanced at her.

"That sounded deliberate."

"It was."

The younger students slowly dispersed as the instructor began replacing the damaged formation stone.

Marcus’s voice suddenly came from behind them.

"I leave you alone for one morning and somehow you two are already breaking academy property."

Azrael looked over.

"We didn’t break it."

Marcus pointed at the shattered stone.

"That looks broken."

"It was already damaged."

Ryan appeared beside him.

"Technically, Azrael finished breaking it."

Seraphina laughed.

Marcus shook his head.

"I knew today wouldn’t be peaceful."

By afternoon, the academy had received the first official report from the northern expedition.

The rescued scouts had been transported to the medical wing, while the surviving civilians were being assisted by the academy and nearby settlements.

Orion had also ordered the northern region placed under temporary observation.

No students were permitted to travel there without authorization.

The decision caused disappointment among several students who had hoped to explore the newly discovered ruins.

Azrael wasn’t among them.

He had already seen enough to know that curiosity without preparation could become dangerous.

That evening, the twins walked through the academy gardens.

Seraphina carried two cups of tea.

She handed one to Azrael.

"You’ve been quiet again."

"I’m thinking."

"About the mountain?"

"No."

She looked surprised.

"Then what?"

Azrael took a sip.

"About Mom."

Seraphina’s expression softened.

"Me too."

They continued walking beneath the trees.

"I keep thinking about what she said," Seraphina admitted. "She wanted us to choose our own lives."

Azrael nodded.

"Which means she probably expected us to become strong."

"Probably."

"But not for her."

Seraphina smiled.

"Exactly."

They reached a small stone bridge overlooking a pond.

Seraphina rested her arms against the railing.

"I used to think finding our mother was the most important thing."

Azrael looked at her.

"Isn’t it?"

"It still matters."

She watched the water below.

"But I don’t think I want to spend the rest of our lives chasing her."

Azrael remained silent.

Seraphina turned toward him.

"I want to find her because she’s our mother. Not because we need her to tell us who we’re supposed to become."

A faint smile appeared on Azrael’s face.

"I agree."

She looked pleased.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Then we’re making progress."

"We’ve been making progress."

"Don’t ruin the moment."

Azrael actually laughed.

It was brief, but genuine.

Seraphina smiled.

"See? You can relax."

"I was already relaxed."

"Of course you were."

That night, Azrael sat alone near the academy’s outer wall.

The moonlight reflected across Astraeus as he rested the sword beside him.

He wasn’t training.

He wasn’t searching for answers.

He was simply listening.

The academy had its own rhythm.

Students moving through the halls.

Instructors speaking in distant classrooms.

Wind passing through the trees.

The faint resonance of countless lives existing together.

For the first time, Azrael understood why his old master had insisted that resonance was not about overpowering something.

It was about listening.

His awareness slowly expanded.

He sensed the academy.

Then the land beyond it.

The mountains.

The distant cities.

The countless lives spread across the world.

And beneath all of it...

A faint disturbance.

Azrael’s eyes opened.

He focused.

The sensation was almost impossible to detect.

It wasn’t coming from the northern mountains.

It was much farther away.

A subtle pulse passed through the world’s energy and disappeared before he could trace it.

Azrael stood.

Astraeus remained at his side.

He didn’t immediately investigate.

Instead, he looked toward the academy lights.

Seraphina was still inside.

Their companions were there.

Their home was there.

Whatever the disturbance was, it could wait until morning.

Azrael turned away from the darkness beyond the wall.

For now, he chose not to chase another mystery.

Tomorrow would be soon enough.
