Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System
Chapter 128 – The Choice of the Heart
Chapter 128: Chapter 128 – The Choice of the Heart
The moment Azrael and Seraphina placed their hands against the two outer rings, the entire chamber came alive. Golden light spread from Seraphina’s position while black energy flowed from Azrael, and both streams traveled around the enormous crystal before meeting at the colorless symbol suspended between them.
The reaction was immediate.
The Heart of the Mountain released a powerful pulse that shook the entire underground city. Dust fell from the ceiling, and several of the surrounding structures groaned under the pressure.
Caelan planted his spear into the ground to steady himself.
"Is this supposed to happen?"
Azrael didn’t answer immediately. He was concentrating on the resonance passing through his body.
"No."
Seraphina looked toward the central crystal. "But it isn’t failing anymore."
She was right.
The cracks that had appeared across the six rings were slowly disappearing. The unstable energy inside the crystal had begun settling into a steady cycle, with golden and black currents moving around each other instead of colliding.
Azrael could feel the difference.
"Don’t force it."
Seraphina nodded. "I’m not."
They adjusted their energy together.
Instead of pushing power into the Heart, they allowed it to draw only what it needed. The distinction was subtle, but it changed everything. The more they tried to control the process, the more unstable it became. When they stopped forcing their will upon it, the Heart began correcting itself.
The colorless symbol brightened.
A third stream of energy emerged.
It wasn’t golden.
It wasn’t black.
It carried no obvious elemental quality at all.
Yet both twins could feel it.
Choice.
The third energy passed between them, connecting Genesis and Oblivion without allowing either to dominate.
Seraphina smiled slightly.
"It’s working."
Azrael nodded.
Then the chamber shook again.
This time, the disturbance came from somewhere much deeper.
A deep rumble traveled through the stone beneath their feet.
The Heart of the Mountain suddenly released another pulse, but instead of spreading outward, the energy traveled downward.
Azrael’s expression changed.
"Something is beneath us."
Caelan looked toward the floor.
"Another chamber?"
"More than that."
Azrael removed his hand from the ring.
The moment he did, the balance weakened.
Seraphina immediately understood.
"Whatever is below us is connected to the Heart."
Azrael returned his hand to the ring.
"We finish stabilizing it first."
They continued.
Above them, the Waiting City began changing.
The people who had been frozen for days, months, and in some cases years, suddenly felt the strange pressure inside their minds disappear.
One by one, they began moving normally again.
Some cried.
Others embraced family members.
A few simply sat on the ground, overwhelmed by the realization that they were finally free.
The academy scouts gathered near the entrance, helping those who were injured or confused.
The middle-aged merchant who had spoken to the group earlier looked toward the central building.
"What’s happening?"
A scout pointed toward the ceiling.
"The energy is disappearing."
The merchant stared upward.
For the first time since arriving in the mountains, sunlight began entering the underground city through cracks that had opened in the cavern ceiling.
The Waiting City was no longer waiting.
Deep beneath the settlement, the six rings finally stopped.
The Heart of the Mountain became completely still.
Then the crystal cracked.
Caelan immediately raised his spear.
"Everyone back!"
Azrael and Seraphina stepped away as a thin fracture appeared across the surface.
The crack spread from the top to the bottom.
For a moment, everyone expected the crystal to explode.
It didn’t.
Instead, the outer shell slowly separated.
A smaller crystal floated out from within.
It was colorless.
The same colorless energy associated with Choice surrounded it.
Seraphina stared.
"It’s another memory crystal."
Azrael nodded.
The crystal moved toward them and stopped between the twins.
A faint image appeared inside.
This time, there was no battlefield.
No ancient city.
No custodians.
It showed a quiet room.
A young woman stood beside a table covered with maps and strange crystals.
The twins recognized her immediately.
Their mother.
Seraphina’s breath caught.
Azrael remained completely still.
They had seen her before in the Tower’s memories, but this image was different.
There was no distortion.
No concealment.
She appeared younger than the woman they remembered from the visions in the Sea of Creation, but her presence was unmistakable.
She placed a small crystal onto the table.
A voice came from somewhere outside the room.
"You cannot keep doing this."
Their mother looked toward the doorway.
"I know."
"If they discover what you’ve done, they’ll come after you."
"I know."
"Then why continue?"
She looked down at the crystal.
"Because they deserve the chance to choose for themselves."
The image shifted.
Two small lights appeared inside the crystal.
One golden.
One black.
Seraphina moved closer.
"Our souls..."
Azrael said nothing.
Their mother continued speaking.
"They believe Genesis and Oblivion must remain separated because they cannot imagine what happens if the two forces are given freedom."
She paused.
"They are wrong."
Another figure entered the room.
Only a silhouette was visible.
"Then you intend to send them away."
"Yes."
"Into the mortal worlds?"
"Yes."
"They may never find their way back."
Their mother looked at the two lights.
"Then they will find their own way."
Seraphina’s eyes began watering.
"She knew."
Azrael looked at her.
"She knew we’d be separated."
The memory continued.
Their mother reached toward the two lights.
"I cannot choose their future for them."
Her voice became softer.
"I can only give them the opportunity to choose it themselves."
The image began fading.
Before it disappeared, she placed her hand against the crystal.
"One day, when they are ready, they’ll understand why I let them go."
The memory ended.
The chamber returned to silence.
Seraphina wiped the corner of her eye.
"So she didn’t abandon us."
Azrael looked at the empty space where the memory had been.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"She sent us away because she believed we needed to choose our own lives."
Seraphina smiled through her tears.
"That sounds like her."
Azrael nodded.
For the first time in a long while, the question that had followed them since childhood felt slightly different.
It was no longer simply Why did she leave us?
Now they had a better question.
What was she trying to protect us from?
The colorless crystal suddenly moved.
It flew toward the center of the chamber and dissolved into the Heart of the Mountain.
A final pulse passed through the underground structure.
The three pillars above changed immediately.
Their energy stabilized completely.
The barrier surrounding the Waiting City disappeared.
The people were free.
A System notification appeared before the twins.
[Azrael’s System]
Resonance Event Completed.
Understanding Deepened: Oblivion
Aetherion Resonance: +2%
Another notification appeared.
[Seraphina’s System]
Resonance Event Completed.
Understanding Deepened: Genesis
Genesis Bloom Understanding: +3%
Neither twin received a new skill.
Neither cared.
The memory had been worth far more than another ability.
Seraphina looked at Azrael.
"We need to return to the academy."
He nodded.
"But we’re not finished."
She looked toward the floor.
The disturbance beneath the Heart had not disappeared.
Azrael could still sense it.
Something was buried far beneath the mountain.
Something that the people who built the Waiting City had deliberately sealed.
Caelan approached.
"Did you find the source of the problem?"
Azrael looked at him.
"We stabilized the Heart, but there’s something deeper."
"Something dangerous?"
Azrael considered the question.
"I don’t know."
Seraphina stepped beside him.
"And that’s exactly why we shouldn’t rush into it."
Caelan nodded.
The decision was made.
They would return to the academy, report everything they had discovered, and prepare properly before investigating whatever remained beneath the mountain.
The group began making their way back toward the surface.
When they reached the Waiting City, the scene had completely changed.
People were helping one another gather belongings. Merchants were checking their caravans, scouts were organizing the injured, and those who had been trapped for years were finally seeing the open world again.
The middle-aged merchant approached the twins.
"I don’t know who you are or why this place responded to you."
He looked toward the central structure.
"But whatever you did, you saved all of us."
Seraphina smiled.
"We’re glad you’re safe."
The merchant bowed his head.
"We owe you our lives."
Azrael shook his head.
"You owe us nothing."
He glanced at the people around them.
"You survived because you kept waiting for a way out."
The merchant smiled.
"Perhaps."
As the group prepared to leave, Seraphina looked back at the underground city one last time.
The Waiting City had been created to preserve a possibility.
Now that possibility had been given back to the people who had been trapped there.
And somewhere beneath the mountain, another secret remained buried.
But they would face it when they were ready.
For now, they had something they had been missing for a long time.
A little more of the truth about their mother.
And a reason to keep moving forward.
