Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]
Chapter 104: what happened at the ball 1
Kai entered the ball with Neet at his arm and let the room read them as a couple.
The choice was deliberate. A masked guest arriving alone attracted too many easy approaches. A masked guest arriving with a composed partner already in place invited fewer interruptions. Neet matched his pace with formally and kept close enough that the image held. Kai did not correct it. For the opening of the night, the assumption worked in his favor.
The ball hall was not filled to the point of crushing, but there were more than enough people inside. Groups stood across the main floor in formal clusters. Masks turned as new arrivals passed. The upper galleries held watchers with wine glasses.
White was not the most common color in the room, so Kai felt attention settle on him before he and Neet had fully cleared the entrance line.
Neet leaned in slightly.
"Master, several eyes are already tracking you."
"I noticed," Kai said. "Keep walking."
They moved deeper into the hall at an unhurried pace. Servants crossed the edges of the floor with trays. Musicians blew at the far arch. The official program had not started yet, which left the room in that early state where people performed elegance while waiting for the real hierarchy to reveal itself. Kai used the time to study exits, platforms, and the denser pockets of influence forming near the front.
He had expected the capital to make a show of the twin royals’ return. He had not expected the pressure of the room to feel this concentrated.
They were halfway toward one of the side colonnades when a figure stepped into their path.
Kai stopped.
Even with formal attire and the posture of a high guest, the man was immediately familiar. Silver hair, A presence that cut through the hall without needing to announce itself.
The mask over his upper face did nothing to dull the effect.
Caelum Draven.
For a moment Kai considered the possibility that he was wrong. Then Caelum spoke and removed the need for doubt.
"Kai."
Neet’s arm tightened by a fraction.
Kai kept his voice low.
"Mr Draven!"
"You recognized me at once."
Caelum’s gaze remained fixed on him, steady and absolute.
"I would know you from afar."
The certainty in the line left little room for performance. Kai exhaled once through his nose and adjusted his stance under the attention around them.
"That is inconvenient."
"For you, perhaps," Caelum said. Then his eyes moved to Neet, and the temperature of the exchange changed. "And this is?"
"This is Neet," Kai answered. "My butler."
Caelum did not accept the description at face value. He studied Neet the way a swordsman studied a body that did not match its label. The pause lasted long enough to become intentional.
"A butler," Caelum repeated.
"Yes," Neet said.
Caelum’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"You are awfully strong for a butler."
Neet smiled without warmth.
"And you are awfully direct for a guest."
The tension landed between them at once. Neither moved, yet the space around the three of them grew tighter. Kai did not need appraisal to feel it. Caelum had already measured Neet as a threat. Neet had already decided Caelum was an interruption. If the wrong sentence followed, the ball’s polished surface would stop mattering.
Kai stepped in before either man could escalate.
"Not here."
Caelum looked back at him, and some of the severity eased without disappearing.
"You are right. This is not the place for poor manners."
Before another private conflict could form, the hall shifted under a rise of formal sound. Horns carried from the head of the chamber. Conversations thinned. Bodies turned toward the main stair and the upper entrance reserved for the hosts of the evening.
A herald’s voice filled the room.
"Presenting Their Highnesses, returned from pilgrimage and entering public duty before court and capital. Crown Prince Evander of the twin line, and Crown Princess Evelyne of the twin line."
The twin royals appeared under the formal light to immediate applause.
They were unmistakable once named. The same fair coloring. The same controlled elegance. The same carefully trained public grace. Evelyne lifted one hand in acknowledgment and smiled with practiced brightness. Evander stood beside her with a calmer expression and eyes that moved across the hall as if counting structure rather than enjoying spectacle.
Kai watched them from his place in the crowd and felt the System stir.
Then Evander’s attention crossed the room, passed over several guests, and stopped on him.
It was brief. It was exact.
The System spoke before Kai could interpret the look on his own.
[New individual registered.]
[Candidate 007 identified.]
[Identity: Crown Prince Evander.]
[Status: Second crown prince of the twin royal line.]
[Affinity: initial threshold detected.] ℯ
Kai’s breath caught under the mask.
Seventh husband.
A crown prince.
Of course the mandatory event had not been arranged for cake and string music.
Caelum noticed the change in him even if he could not hear the System.
"Kai."
"I am listening."
"I need a quieter audience," Caelum said. "Away from this cluster."
Neet moved first.
"No."
Caelum’s eyes cut back to him.
"Let him go."
Neet did not step aside.
"I am afraid I cannot allow that until the master says it is okay. So move, or be moved."
The words were polite in shape and absolute in meaning. Caelum turned fully toward him, and the air between the two men sharpened at once. No blade left a sheath. No public blow was thrown. Even so, the violence under the moment was obvious enough that nearby guests began glancing over without understanding why the space felt suddenly unsafe.
The System struck hard through Kai’s mind.
[Warning.]
[Conflict probability between Candidate 001 and household unit Neet has entered catastrophic range.]
[If Host does not intervene, public combat is likely.]
[Projected consequence: severe structural damage and political exposure.]
Kai’s pulse jumped.
"Hey... guys, stop it."
Neither looked away from the other fast enough.
"Neet," Kai said more firmly. "It is okay."
Neet’s jaw tightened. He remained still for one more second, then withdrew by a half step and released Kai’s arm with visible reluctance.
"As master commands."
Caelum did not thank him. He only turned to Kai and gestured toward a side passage between two columns.
"Come."
Kai followed.
They left the denser crowd and entered a quieter annex off the main hall, a reserved space screened by dark curtains and guarded by enough distance to thin the noise of the ball. The music continued behind them. The formal introductions continued behind them. In the annex, the pressure narrowed to the two of them alone.
Kai stopped near a long table and faced him.
"So," he said. "What do you want to talk about?"
Caelum did not ease into it.
He looked at Kai as if the answer had already been fixed in place for a long time and only now had room to be spoken.
"I want to marry you."
Kai stared at him under the mask.
"Uhmmm..."
