Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Special mission

Rowan looked around at his squad members. Barney nodded with a tight, determined grimace; Seraphina adjusted her satchel with a sharp flick of her wrist; and Caelen and Mirei stood shoulder-to-shoulder, their stances immovable.

Turning back to the desk, Rowan met Head Dean Sterling’s gaze directly. "Squad 07 accepts the confidential directive, Dean Sterling. We won’t let them compromise the Tower’s infrastructure—or our deployment."

"Good," Sterling said, her eyes flashing with approval. She tapped her console, transferring classified tactical authorization to Rowan’s Sol-Aethel pass. "You have full clearance to investigate and engage suspect elements on Layer 1. What is your plan of action?"

"We split our forces to cover both ends of the trail," Rowan outlined, his voice calm and tactical. "Seraphina and I will take the purified dirt sample and trace its synthetic chemical signature through the trade hubs in the Layer 1 city. If the Order of Humanity is brewing or smuggling this compound locally, the raw reagents will lead us straight to their hideout."

"And the rest of us?" Barney asked.

"You, Caelen, and Mirei will return to Sector 1-E," Rowan instructed. "Saboteurs usually return to verify if their work held or to re-contaminate nodes if they see them purified. Set up a stakeout in the canopy surrounding the outpost. If anyone comes back to finish the job or inspect the site, apprehend them."

"Understood," Caelen said, tapping his chest plate. "We’ll blend into the high branches around the perimeter. If a cultist steps foot into that clearing, they won’t leave it."

"Keep your comms linked," Sterling ordered, handing over three long-range encrypted mana-flares. "If you locate an active cell inside the urban district or catch an operative at Sector 1-E, do not hesitate to call for garrison backup if the threat escalates. Dismissed."

An hour later, the plan was set in motion.

In the thick forest canopy overlooking the newly restored Sector 1-E outpost, Barney, Caelen, and Mirei lay prone across a wide, obsidian-bark branch forty feet above the ground. Wrapped in camouflage cloaks that dampened their heat and mana signatures, they watched the quiet clearing below. Mirei had an arrow resting lightly against her bowstring, her eyes tracking every rustle in the dark brush.

Meanwhile, back in the sprawling city grid of Layer 1, Rowan and Seraphina navigated the crowded alleys of the Lower Reagents District.

Seraphina held a small, bronze-ringed tracking compass in her palm, inside of which floated a tiny droplet of the extracted toxic pollutant. Activating a specialized alchemical tracking pulse, a faint purple aura extended from the needle, pointing steadily through the maze of stone warehouses toward a dimly lit, unmarked basement entryway near the outer canal.

"The resonance is getting stronger," Seraphina whispered, her voice barely audible over the market noise. "The same chemical base is being stored in high volumes right beneath that building."

Rowan touched the hilt of his weapon, keeping his eyes on the heavy iron door at the bottom of the basement stairs. "We found them. Let’s signal the squad and prepare to move."

Keeping their postures natural and relaxed, Rowan and Seraphina strolled past the heavy iron basement door, slipping seamlessly into the bustling foot traffic of the canal marketplace. To any onlookers, they appeared to be nothing more than two academy students browsing the local street stalls between classes.

Seraphina casually picked up a dried bundle of silver-thistle from a vendor’s display, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows of the alley out of her peripheral vision. "There are two guards posted near the cellar steps," she murmured softly, pretending to inspect the herbs. "Dressed in plain courier tunics, but their stances are rigid. Combatants."

"Don’t look directly at them," Rowan replied in a quiet tone, sifting through a wooden crate of unappraised wild roots at a neighboring merchant’s table. "We need to verify if there’s an exit in the rear before we call in Caelen’s team or the garrison."

As Rowan absentmindedly sorted through the tangled pile of dirt-caked plants, a faint, crystalline chime resonated directly in his mind.

A sharp blue interface window expanded across his vision, highlighting a small, neglected sprig tucked beneath a pile of common dandelion roots:

[SYSTEM ALERT: Rare Flora Detected]

Item: Quintessential Five-Leaf Clover (Unique Herb)

Rarity: Unique (E-Rank Layer Spawn)

Effect: Permanent +5 Luck Attribute upon consumption/absorption.

Status: Raw, Unrefined.

Rowan’s breath hitched slightly, though his face remained completely expressionless. In a world governed by stats, basic attributes like Strength, Agility, and Intelligence could be trained or buffed through specialized gear. Luck, however, was a hidden, unalterable stat that influenced item drop rates, critical hits, and field survival. Finding a permanent +5 boost sitting casually on a Layer 1 bargain table was almost absurd.

He glanced at the handwritten slate tag stuck into the crate: 120 Gold.

Rowan checked his Sol-Aethel pass balance. He had precisely 120 gold left from his recent allowance and stall earnings—spending every last coin on an unappraised plant in the middle of a covert investigation felt reckless, but the system alert left no room for doubt.

"Looking for wild herbs, young master?" the old merchant asked, leaning over the wooden counter with a yellowed smile. "Freshly dug from the outer rim this morning. One hundred and twenty gold for the five-leaf sprig."

"It’s bruised at the stem," Rowan said smoothly, picking up the clover by its base and holding it up to the light with a practiced, critical eye. "The mana vein inside is faint, and the outer leaf is starting to wilt. It won’t hold its potency past tonight without a proper stasis box, which I’ll have to buy separately."

The merchant squinted at the clover, hesitating. "It’s a five-leaf mutation! Very rare for Layer 1!"

"Rare, but unstable," Rowan countered calmly, pulling out his coin pouch. "Ninety gold, cash right now. Otherwise, it’ll rot on your table before dusk."

The merchant grumbled, looking between the decaying stall inventory and the gleaming gold coins in Rowan’s hand. "Tough negotiator... Fine, fine. Take it for ninety."

Rowan handed over the gold, leaving himself with a measly 30 gold in his pouch. Without hesitation, he crushed the delicate five-leaf clover between his fingers, channeling a pulse of Breath of Eden to instantly absorb its raw essence into his mana circuit.

A warm, golden light washed over his chest, followed by a system confirmation:

[Item Absorbed!]

Permanent Attribute Increase: +5 Luck

Current Luck Stat: 0+5 (+5)

"A quick impulse buy in the middle of a cult investigation?" Seraphina whispered, stepping closer as Rowan brushed the remaining plant dust off his hands.

"A necessary investment," Rowan replied with a faint smirk, feeling a subtle, invisible shift in his perception. "And now... let’s deal with the Order of Humanity."
