Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Morals and Ethics

Finishing his breakfast, Rowan cleared his tray and made his way across the morning-lit campus toward the Central Academic Block.

The first lecture of the term was not track-specific; it was a mandatory Combined Foundations Lecture for the entire freshman class, bringing both the combat and non-combat tracks together in the grand amphitheater.

Rowan entered the main lecture hall just before 7:00 AM. The vast auditorium was quickly filling up. True to the unspoken boundary, the combat students took up the left tier of seats, their armor pieces and crest pins glinting, while the auxiliary and support students occupied the right. Rowan found a seat midway up the right side, pulling out his notebook as the main stage lights brightened.

PART I: INTRODUCTION TO BEING AN AWAKENER (7:00 AM – 8:00 AM)

A senior administrator stepped up to the podium—a stern woman wearing the formal charcoal-and-gold robes of the Imperial Awakener Bureau.

"Silence," her voice echoed throughout the hall, instantly quelling the room’s chatter. "Welcome to Introduction to Awakener Status. Today, you leave behind the legal framework of ordinary civilians. You hold power—power that can easily destabilize society if left unchecked."

She projected a massive floating ledger of statutory laws and imperial decrees behind her, launching into an intensive breakdown of the Do’s and Don’ts governing Awakeners in civil society:

AWAKENER CIVIL CODE DIRECTIVES

[MANDATORY COMPLIANCE (DO’S)]

[STRICT PROHIBITIONS (DON’TS)]

* Register all class mutations & domain shifts.

* Unsanctioned use of mana or skills in public zones.

* Report wild rift openings within 15 minutes.

* Private sales of uncertified high-grade toxins/drugs.

* Yield to emergency vanguard requisitions.

* Coercive skill usage against unawakened citizens.

"Awakener status is a privilege granted by the realm to defend humanity," the professor emphasized sharply. "It is not a license for thuggery, extortion, or public displays of force. Any unauthorized skill usage outside of designated dungeons, arenas, or licensed cultivation grounds carries immediate expulsion and mana-seal imprisonment."

She spent the remaining minutes outlining the severe legal repercussions of unregistered trade, black-market dungeon raiding, and unauthorized duel challenges, ending her segment with a firm warning:

"Physical strength without legal restraint makes you nothing more than a monster with a human face. In fifteen minutes, Professor Cole will begin your session on Morals and Ethics. Reflect on what kind of Awakener you intend to become."

INTERMISSION (15 MINUTES)

As the first professor stepped down, the hall hummed with quiet conversation. Combat students stretched and debated the limits of self-defense laws, while the non-combat students took notes on trade compliance and permit requirements.

During the break, a grey-haired professor with deep, weathered lines across his face walked onto the stage. Carrying a heavy brass-bound projector crystal and several leather cases of archival slides, he quietly set up his materials for the next hour, adjusting the runic focus on the podium.

PART II: MORALS & ETHICS — THE TWO PATHS OF POWER

When the bell chimed to end the intermission, the grey-haired instructor—Professor Cole—looked up from his podium. He didn’t raise his voice, but his solemn presence commanded immediate attention.

"Power does not corrupt," Professor Cole began, his voice low and resonant. "Power reveals. Today, we discuss the moral obligation of the Awakened."

He tapped his conduit crystal, and a brilliant, glowing hologram filled the center of the amphitheater.

1. The Pillars of Humanity

The projection displayed historic records of legendary Awakeners who had dedicated their lives to society:

Defense & Foundation: Vanguard knights holding abyssal rifts to allow civilian evacuations; architects using earth and structural mana to erect city walls in hours.

Science & Progress: Alchemists and botanical scholars who synthesized mass cures for rift plagues, eliminating deadly diseases and boosting crop yields by three hundred percent to eliminate famine.

"These men and women did not just fight monsters," Cole said softly. "They built the very walls that keep you warm at night. They turned raw mana into medicine, energy, and peace."

THE TWO PATHS OF AWAKENING

[THE GUARDIANS OF SOCIETY]

[THE FALLEN / ROUGE FACTIONS]

* Scientific advancement & rift defense

* Black-market organ & core harvesting

* Agricultural stabilization & disease cure

* Cultivation of dark arts via ritual sacrifice

* Protection of unawakened populations

* Synthesis of untraceable biological poisons

2. The Dark Side of Awakening

With a flick of his wrist, the brilliant light dimmed into an ominous, crimson-tinged projection. Images of ruined settlements, dark ritual circles, and black-market dossier files flashed across the screen.

A heavy chill settled over the amphitheater.

"Then... there are those who fall," Cole continued, his tone turning grim. "Awakeners who view their power as superiority, and society as prey. Driven by greed, pride, and the pursuit of shortcut breakthroughs, they abandon their humanity."

He displayed documented cases of rogue factions:

The Alchemical Syndicate: Rogue potion-crafters who developed untraceable, nerve-destroying toxins and addictive mana-siphoning drugs to control underground crime networks.

Dark Cultivators: Rogue practitioners who turned away from natural mana harmony, utilizing forbidden ritualistic sacrifices—harvesting the living mana cores of monsters, civilians, and fellow Awakeners to force corrupt class evolutions.

"Notice the common thread," Cole said, pointing a steady finger at the dark projections. "Every single rogue Awakener began by believing they were above the rules. That their talent exempted them from basic ethics."

He turned his gaze across both sides of the hall, letting the silence heavy with meaning soak into every student.

"Whether you hold a blade or a trowel, the temptation to misuse your growth will come. Remember this lesson: the moment you sacrifice your ethics for rapid power, you cease to be a defender of humanity—you become the very threat we are sworn to eradicate."

Rowan sat quietly in his seat, absorbing every word. With his 17 Wisdom, he understood the deep truth behind the professor’s lecture. True strength wasn’t just about accumulating raw attributes or higher-tier produce—it was about building an unshakeable foundation that could withstand any corruption.

As the lecture concluded, the entire hall remained still for a long moment before the professor dismissed them for their afternoon specialized tracks.

As the students began gathering their notebooks and filing out of the amphitheater, a short, chubby boy in a dark leather work apron waddled briskly down the steps toward Rowan’s row. His round face was flushed red from hurrying, and a heavy brass tool pouch clinked against his hip with every step.

He stopped in front of Rowan, wiping a sheen of sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve, and offered a wide, friendly grin.

"Phew, that Professor Cole sure knows how to make a room quiet, huh?" the boy puffed, extending a thick, calloused hand toward Rowan. "Hey there! Name’s Barnaby Forge—well, everyone just calls me Barney. Fourth-generation apprentice of the Ironforge Workshop downtown!"

Rowan shook his hand, noting the firm grip and furnace-warm temperature of Barney’s palm—unmistakable traits of an active blacksmithing class.

"Rowan Vance," he replied smoothly. "Nice to meet you, Barney."

Barney’s eyes lit up as he adjusted the heavy leather strap across his shoulder. "I saw your practical assessment score on the board outside Table Four yesterday! An S-Tier practical score from a common Gardener? That had the whole crafting wing talking. My granddad always says that the best smiths and the best growers are two sides of the same coin—we both need a feel for raw elemental balance."

He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice with a jovial chuckle. "Besides, watching those arrogant nobles across the aisle get humbled by Dean Sterling was the best part of my morning. Mind if I walk with you to the auxiliary courtyard?"

Rowan smiled faintly, slinging his bag over his shoulder as they walked together toward the exit. Having a well-connected blacksmith apprentice as a friendly contact would certainly prove useful for his future.
