Chapter 284: Enemy Attack
Qian Wei, Adika, Jing Chuan, and the others all looked excited at Long Ming's words.
"How do we distribute this second-generation exoskeleton armor?"
Luoxue and the others looked to Qiansha and asked.
"To keep things fair, we'll distribute them based on combat prowess. We need to maximize our strength as much as possible right now," Qiansha said in a low voice.
"Alright!"
Luoxue and the others nodded.
...
「A short while later.」
The entire reserve armory was emptied out.
Long Ming and the others returned to the top of the disc-shaped structure of Famons Base, where soldiers were quickly setting up the new weapons.
Just then, Jiang Huai came running over, shouting.
"Bad news!"
"What is it?"
Qiansha and the others all turned to look at Jiang Huai.
"I just risked sending out a recon drone. It spotted a huge number of Blood Breath Beasts heading for us from the direction of the Royal City," Jiang Huai reported, his expression tense.
"Dammit, they're fast! Alang, what's the repair status from Dr. Xu Rui and his team?"
Qiansha asked, his face grim.
'He knew the Blood Breath Beasts would attack, but this was too fast. It didn't give them any time to regroup.'
"Not ideal. Progress is very slow!" Captain Alang reported to Qiansha.
"Everyone, prepare for battle! We have to hold out until Dr. Xu Rui and his team are done!" Qiansha immediately ordered everyone.
"Yes, sir!"
Long Ming and the others dispersed, heading to their assigned defensive sectors.
The seconds ticked by.
「Five hours later.」
Everyone was on high alert, ready for the fight.
In the southwestern sector, Jing Chuan grumbled quietly to Long Ming.
"You're something else. You found the armory and didn't even call us. Hogging all the good stuff for yourself again."
"I wasn't sure I'd find anything. I was just trying my luck, and what do you know, I got it. But I did grab some extra cryo-grenades. Here, have some."
Long Ming pulled a few cryo-grenades from his backpack and handed them to Jing Chuan.
"Awesome stuff!"
Jing Chuan accepted them with a grin.
"Give me some!"
Seeing this, Jiang Heng and the others also held out their hands to Long Ming.
'They had each been assigned one, but that was hardly enough!'
"There's enough for everyone."
Long Ming stuffed a few grenades into each of their hands.
Watching from the side, a faint smile graced Luoxue's lips.
"You want some?"
Long Ming asked, noticing Luoxue looking his way.
"I don't need any. Just give them a few more."
Luoxue shook her head slightly.
"Okay."
Long Ming nodded.
ROAR!
Just then, a roar echoed from the sky.
Then, a terrifying silhouette flew across the dark, overcast sky.
Long Ming and the others looked up at the sky to see swarms of Blood Breath Bats, Blood Breath Falcons, and Blood Breath Butterflies circling Famons Base.
But they didn't attack right away. Instead, they were waiting for the main horde to arrive to launch a coordinated assault.
"Dammit, these Blood Breath Beasts are getting crafty," Jing Chuan cursed, watching the Blood Breath Birds circling like vultures.
"They are."
Long Ming also felt the immense pressure.
At that moment, Blood Breath Beasts began to appear over the southern mountain peaks, their numbers swelling as they swarmed down into the valley below.
The earth itself began to tremble.
Watching the scene unfold, Qiansha gave the order.
"Fire!"
At the command, Long Ming and the others raised their weapons and took aim, picking off the beasts clambering down the slopes with controlled shots.
BANG! BANG!
A hail of bullets rained down, striking beast after beast.
Many of the creatures fell, only to be knocked from the mountain cliffs by the surging tide of beasts behind them.
SCREECH!
The Blood Breath Birds in the sky dove toward Long Ming and the others like a plague of locusts.
At that moment, the Fanged Fire close-in weapon systems activated.
A dense curtain of fire shot into the sky.
Countless flying creatures, like the Blood Breath Bats, were shredded by the barrage.
A rain of dark red gore fell from the sky.
Just then, the main horde of Blood Breath Beasts charged down from the mountains, swarming toward Famons Base.
Soldiers manning machine guns and other heavy weapons laid down continuous fire on the approaching beasts.
The charging beasts fell in droves.
But more kept coming, wave after relentless wave, like a tide.
As far as the eye could see, nearly half the valley was dyed red, the sheer number of creatures enough to make one's skin crawl.
Although no Lord Level beasts had appeared in the horde yet, the sheer scale and number of the attack were already overwhelming.
"Damn, did we really kick the hornet's nest? They sent this many Blood Breath Beasts just to wipe us out? Talk about giving us too much credit," Jing Chuan said to Long Ming while firing.
"Who the hell knows!"
Long Ming looked as if he'd seen a ghost himself; the situation was just that unbelievable.
Fortunately, Famons Base was a natural fortress, easy to defend and difficult to assault. The many beasts that made it through the storm of gunfire couldn't scale the sheer metal walls. They could only claw uselessly at the surface, roaring in fury.
Long Ming and the others pulled out grenades and tossed them down into the horde.
BOOM!
Beast after beast was sent flying by the explosions.
Just then, incredibly fast Blood Breath Falcons dove from the sky, launching kamikaze attacks on the soldiers.
"Watch out for the Falcons!"
Captain Alang roared at the top of his lungs.
The soldiers raised their guns, firing nonstop to shoot down the diving Falcons.
However, some Falcons still broke through the defensive fire, crashing into soldiers and exploding on impact.
"AHH!"
Agonized screams rang out one after another.
Even though the soldiers were all equipped with exoskeleton armor, it wasn't enough to withstand the Falcons' suicide attacks. Some lost limbs, while others were killed instantly.
"Dammit!"
Qiansha was filled with fury as he watched his subordinates fall one by one.
ROAR!
A terrifying roar suddenly echoed from the sky.
Startled, everyone looked up to see the Lord Level Blood Breath Beast, Argoslo, hurtling toward them at high speed.
"Not good! Don't let it get close!"
Long Ming shouted a warning.
'If that thing dives and lets out a puff of its red breath, we'll suffer massive casualties.'
"Re-aim the point-defense cannons and missile launchers now!"
Qian Luobing issued the command, her voice cold and sharp.
Soldiers scrambled to re-aim the point-defense cannons and missile launchers, unleashing a fierce barrage on the incoming Lord Level Blood Breath Beast, Argoslo.
FWOOSH!
Two Darklight Missiles and a dense volley of gunfire streaked toward it.
Argoslo was hit instantly.
BOOOOM!
A massive explosion erupted.
The large-caliber rounds tore bloody holes all over Argoslo's body.
Argoslo let out a pained shriek, but it didn't abandon its attack. Instead, it beat its massive wings to accelerate, spewing a searing red mist toward the point-defense cannons and missile launchers.
"AHH!"
The mechanical armor covering the soldiers glowed red-hot before their bodies were carbonized inside.
The point-defense cannons and missile launchers exploded one after another.
Seeing this, Long Ming decisively rushed forward, drew his Godblast Rifle, and aimed at Argoslo.
He fully activated his Night Owl power-assist system and pulled the trigger.
BANG!
The immense recoil nearly sent him flying; he slid back several meters before coming to a stop.
The explosive round hit Argoslo square in the head, unleashing a massive explosion.
"AWOOO~"
One of Argoslo's eyes was blown out, leaving a gaping, bloody cavity. It let out a shriek of pain.
It desperately beat its wings and flew back into the sky.
"Dammit, I didn't take it down."
Long Ming quickly reloaded, wanting to take a second shot, but the creature had already flown out of range.
"Forget about that thing for now!"
Jing Chuan yelled anxiously.
Long Ming froze for a second, then whipped his head around to look. The ground below had become a sea of red.
'And it only took the blink of an eye!'
"Just keep killing! There are more coming!"
Jing Chuan was at his wits' end.
There had to be millions of these Blood Breath Beasts.
