From Trash to Treasure: The Sinclair Family's Beloved Genius
Chapter 498 - 495: Reporting to the School of Mathematics
The old man’s eyes were a little red, but it was hard to tell if it was from anger or some other emotion.
He had lost all hope for this son of his decades ago.
He had thought marriage would temper him, but instead, he only got worse, even driving his own wife to her death.
From that moment on, the old man had severed all familial ties with Joseph Shaw.
Now that Joseph Shaw was behind bars, he felt nothing but a brief jolt of surprise. There were no other emotions.
"Joseph Shaw broke the law. It’s good for him to stay in there. As for when he gets out, that’s entirely up to him."
But the old man just snorted coldly. "Hah. He thinks he’s getting out?"
"I still haven’t settled the score with him for what happened to your mother!"
Jasper Shaw remained silent.
When he was a child, Joseph Shaw and his mother never got along. His mother was from Solis, and she had a gentle way of speaking. Even when she knew Joseph was seeing other women, she didn’t dare say a word.
Joseph Shaw loved to drink. He would come home drunk and become violent. His mother never dared to fight back. In the end, she couldn’t take it anymore and committed suicide.
But Joseph Shaw told everyone his wife had died in an accident. Even the funeral was a rushed affair.
The old man had watched Jasper’s mother grow up. Her parents died when she was young, and the other elders in her family passed away one by one. By the time she died, she had no family left.
The old man had probably decided from that moment on that he would no longer acknowledge his son.
For a moment, the study fell silent.
Grandfather and grandson were each lost in their own thoughts.
Suddenly, the old man asked, "What’s all this I’m seeing online? Are Chloe Sinclair’s adoptive parents really such scumbags?"
The old man had become quite slick with his phone these days. He had even learned how to vote on fan charts.
The first thing he did every morning was vote for Chloe Sinclair and send her a private message.
Not that Chloe Sinclair had ever replied.
In just a few short months, the old man had somehow become the admin of a fan group with over a thousand members.
He had also heard about the situation with Chloe Sinclair’s adoptive parents.
"Yes. Chloe has already called the police, but by the time the officers got to their rental apartment, they were gone."
Jasper Shaw added, "I’ve also sent people to find them. We should have news in a few days."
Hearing this, the old man’s brow furrowed deeply, and his tone suddenly grew serious.
"Miss Sinclair hasn’t had an easy life. Since you dared to choose her, you must treat her well. If you end up like your father, I swear I’ll claw my way out of my coffin and drag you down with me, even in death."
The corner of Jasper Shaw’s mouth twitched.
"I will."
Just talking about Chloe Sinclair seemed to soften Jasper Shaw’s expression.
The old man looked at his grandson, a little exasperated, but ultimately, he couldn’t help but worry about his only grandson. "Alright, the housekeeper told me Zane Jordan drove you two back today. In that case, just stay at the old residence for the next few days. Don’t go out."
He had only learned of Zane Jordan’s true identity by accident.
He knew that whenever Zane Jordan showed up, something big was about to happen.
Jasper Shaw gave a wry smile. "There’s still so much to do at the company, how can I leave? Besides, Joseph Shaw left behind a huge mess. I have to go take a look in a couple of days."
Although the old man wasn’t managing Joseph Shaw’s affairs, Joseph still held shares in the Shaw Group.
He leased a plot of land himself, intending to develop his own property.
But a few days ago, news came that there had been an accident at the construction site.
Although Joseph Shaw was the one who caused the trouble, many connections were tangled up in it, with the Shaw Group bearing the brunt of the fallout.
"After I finish the work on my plate, I have to go check on the construction site." Jasper Shaw glanced at the old man and couldn’t help but say, "If you really feel for me, why don’t I just give you the chairman position? From what I can see, you’re still eating and drinking just fine."
"Get lost!" the old man refused instantly. "Don’t even think about swindling me."
Then, he added irritably, "Scram. Stop being an eyesore."
Feeling helpless, Jasper Shaw left the study.
As he passed Chloe Sinclair’s room, Jasper Shaw glanced at the closed door, guessing the young woman was already asleep.
He turned and entered his own room.
Just as he had said, he left his door open all night.
But the young woman never came looking for him.
The next morning, Chloe Sinclair woke up early.
Not only did she have an early class, but the School of Mathematics had also notified her yesterday that she needed to complete her enrollment procedures today.
The old man was a little disappointed to hear Chloe Sinclair was leaving so early and asked her about it casually.
Chloe Sinclair answered honestly.
The old man was slightly surprised to learn that Chloe Sinclair was double-majoring in both Mathematics and Physics.
Still, he was very much in favor of it.
"Mathematics and Physics go hand-in-hand. It’s best if you can handle both. I have a friend or two at Emberfall University, so if you run into any problems at school, just look for them."
’The old man’s words were another way of saying, I have connections at Emberfall University. If anything happens, I’ve got your back.’
A warmth spread through Chloe Sinclair’s heart. She nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Grandfather."
Not long after breakfast, Zane Jordan drove over again.
Only today, there was a bluish-purple bruise on his left cheek.
Chloe Sinclair glanced at it briefly but said nothing.
Zane Jordan first dropped Chloe Sinclair off at the university, then drove Jasper Shaw to his company.
After Chloe Sinclair got out of the car, she drew a lot of attention.
Chloe Sinclair walked straight into the university.
Chloe Sinclair was quite popular. As she walked toward the School of Physics, many students saw her and greeted her.
After her morning class, Chloe Sinclair went to the School of Mathematics to handle her paperwork.
The professors at the School of Mathematics were all quite happy to hear that Chloe Sinclair was coming over.
When Chloe Sinclair arrived at the office, she was showered with warm greetings. Several professors even wanted to teach her class.
"Chloe, your grandfather just called me. He said you can ask me if you have any questions, so don’t be a stranger! If you have any math problems, we can discuss them together."
"That’s right, your grandfather called me too. He told me to look after you."
Chloe Sinclair didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
She hadn’t expected the old man to act so quickly.
She had only just arrived at the university, yet the old man had already made several rounds of phone calls.
Chloe Sinclair’s heart felt warm. She thanked the professors from the School of Mathematics one by one.
As she was about to leave, the Dean stopped her. "Remember to come to class tomorrow. If you have a lab, remember to request leave. Even though you’ve joined the School of Mathematics, you still need to follow its basic rules."
The girl was still young. He was afraid outside influences would affect her.
Chloe Sinclair heard him, turned back, and mulled over the Dean’s words.
After a moment, she understood what he meant and said, "Don’t worry, sir. I understand."
Only after Chloe Sinclair said this did the Dean feel relieved.
"Alright, you can go on with your business then."
As he spoke, he seemed to remember something and suddenly pulled out his phone. "We have a group chat. You should join."
He explained, "We’ve been working on some math problems recently. You can take a look when you have time."
Most of the professors at the School of Mathematics didn’t treat Chloe Sinclair as just a student.
Having researched mathematics for so many years, they knew that solving that millennium prize problem, as Chloe Sinclair had done, couldn’t be explained away by mere luck.
Chloe Sinclair was added to the group. There were twenty-two professors in total, a few of whom were even from the neighboring university.
As soon as she joined, several professors in the group sent out red envelopes.
The amounts weren’t large, but they weren’t small either.
After claiming the red envelopes, Chloe Sinclair said thank you and sent out a red envelope of her own.
By the time she left the office, it was almost noon.
Many students at the university were already heading to the cafeteria for lunch.
Chloe Sinclair rarely ate at the school, but her student card had a lot of money on it.
Jasper Shaw had secretly topped it up once using her phone.
It was more than she could use up anytime soon.
So Chloe Sinclair simply ordered a few of the most expensive dishes the school offered, but they still added up to less than thirty yuan.
The cafeteria was bustling. After getting her food, Chloe Sinclair found that nearly all the seats were taken, so she found a relatively secluded spot and sat at a table by herself.
Many people couldn’t help but whisper when they saw Chloe Sinclair.
"Holy shit, it’s the prodigy! What’s she doing in the cafeteria today?"
"Damn, people always said Chloe Sinclair from the School of Physics was gorgeous, but I didn’t expect her to be this beautiful. Her skin is so fair. Even the way she eats looks better than other people."
"I’m a girl, and even I’m captivated."
"This just proves that girls appreciate girls more. What kind of ethereal beauty is Chloe Sinclair? I could cry."
"The goddess is eating alone. I want to go eat with her, but I feel so unworthy, sob sob sob."
Many of the guys in the cafeteria could hardly take their eyes off Chloe Sinclair.
I mean, who doesn’t like looking at someone beautiful?
Even if it’s not love at first sight, beautiful people are always a mood-lifter.
Especially a stunner like Chloe Sinclair.
Unlike internet celebrities and stars, Chloe Sinclair had an oval face. Since she had been taking better care of herself, her health had improved, and her face had filled out a little. She had willow-leaf brows and large, round eyes. Her dark eyes always looked so vibrant, and at times, they would appear dewy, like a fawn in the forest.
She was incredibly charming.
Some of the guys were getting restless, but none of them dared to approach her.
As Chloe Sinclair ate, she heard all of the guys’ teasing and chatter.
She glanced up, but before she could even see who was talking, the young men in front of her immediately lowered their heads.
"Holy crap, the goddess looked over!"
"Who is she looking at?"
"I don’t know, man! I was too nervous, I didn’t dare to look."
"Coward!"
"You’re one to talk! If you’re so brave, you lift your head!"
Chloe Sinclair: "..."
’Maybe it’s better if I don’t come to the cafeteria in the future.’
Just as she was thinking this, a shadow fell over her, blocking her line of sight.
Since it didn’t move, Chloe Sinclair raised her eyes to look.
A girl in a white dress was glaring at her resentfully.
"BEEP—"
"Malice value of 99+ detected. System has activated protective mode for the Host."
Chloe Sinclair felt a sense of helplessness.
’I’m just trying to eat a meal, why is there so much drama?’
Most importantly, she didn’t even know the girl in front of her.
"Eight, look this person up."
Eight: "Okey-dokey."
With that, Eight quickly used its big data to look up information on the woman in front of her.
The process only took a second or two.
