Chapter 946 - 946: Marn Vesk Spends Nine Shifts At Once

  • Next Chapter

Broken wax came off the pay card under Marn's thumb and exposed the stamped surname Vesk.

The first name had been hidden beneath his oldest shift box. He scraped the wax away with the edge of his wall ring until all four letters returned. The clerk had stamped a landing number across the M and covered the rest when the first shift went unpaid, leaving Marn to carry nine days of wax over his own name.

Ruvan waited across the crossing table with a public tally strip under one hand.

"Give the crossing table the name hidden under that wax."

"Marn Vesk, seventh freight landing, with nine shifts unpaid."

Ruvan wrote the name, work, and damaged claim before the lower current pulled another inch of table toward the west wall.

Beside Marn, Todd loosened Nana's red cord from the returned capsule staff. The brass seven mark stayed beneath the knot. A black cloth fiber had caught below it, pressed into the groove made by the wooden Cross Link stair.

Todd touched the fiber to his cracked fragment.

Red writing moved along one thread and stopped where a wire scrape crossed it.

"Elithira used wire on her sword guard when carrying authority that could spend Ty. This thread crossed the same kind of lock, so her equipment moved through Nana's road. It tells me nothing about her condition or destination."

Ty's skull turned inside Jade's hands.

"She carried the Demon Crown's worst choices without pretending they became harmless."

Todd folded the fiber inside the brass marker and tied Nana's cord around both staff sections.

"Then I keep the evidence closed until Elithira states what she chose."

The groove in the returned staff opened against the crossing table.

Two cuts appeared in the wood, each narrow enough for a packing cord. Ruvan shoved the public tally away before the first red line pushed through.

Marn recognized the knots.

Havel's cord carried a black wrap where Ty's hand had bruised his wrist in Kestra's storehouse. Sima's line had been shortened after Cava cut free from the lamp route.

Both freight cutters drove recovery jaws into Rillhold.

Havel came through the first opening on one knee with his flat mask hanging from his belt. The cut above his brow had dried into the fabric at his temple. Sima entered shoulder first and kept both hands around the cord attached to Cava's seventh account.

Their orders pulled every jaw away from Todd's throat.

"Preserve the blade holder, recover the true fragment, and return the living crown address."

Todd crossed his two staff sections between the jaws. The first set of teeth closed on wood. The second caught Nana's red cord and stopped before it reached his wrist.

"Your order remains thoughtful about my breathing and careless about everyone else's furniture."

Ruvan turned the nearest pale downstake toward the table.

"Clinic Five carries two workers with their directions already damaged, so this fight stays on the empty west brace even if every person at this table hates the angle."

Harven and two crossing workers moved the table along its red groove. Jade carried Ty's skull beside it while his whole chain held the torn prison band under the closing cover. Nessa kept the recovered field finger between herself and Havel's jaw.

Cava sat against the floor stake with her injured ankle wrapped around Todd's boot. Her ring and smallest fingers remained strapped over the capture hook. The severed recovery jaw hung from the hook without touching her crown.

Marn held up the three wax family loops.

"These were promised as homes, and the account shaped them for wrists, chests, and breathing cups."

Marn had stood beside Borren's widow when the freight clerk measured her daughter's wrist with packing string. The clerk asked whether the child slept flat, how often she coughed, and which hand she used to carry water. He called the questions placement needs. Marn had pictured a narrow bunk near the landing office.

The smallest wax loop held the same wrist measure.

Havel looked at the smallest loop.

"That place belonged to Borren's daughter after the ceiling killed him."

"The clerk asked her age and sleeping needs before making this measure."

Sima pulled Cava's cord tighter.

"Closing the account leaves Borren's family with nothing and buries every shift beside them."

Cava kept the capture hook beneath her strapped fingers.

"Opening it puts his daughter inside the place they measured."

Havel loosened his cord by one hand width. His recovery jaw tilted away from Todd's staff.

Sima used the slack to pull both cords through her shoulder ring.

The first jaw turned back toward the Cross Link fragment. The second dragged Cava's severed jaw across the floor stake, trying to complete the address through the tool she had cut away.

Nessa sent the recovered field finger between its teeth.

The jaw closed around two bone joints and stored the grip without reaching Cava. Nessa's numb arm lifted inside its harness as the prison hardware chose the cutter's direction.

"This jaw is taking my cage arm with it, and the field finger cannot hold another pull."

Jade laid Ty's first chain link across Nessa's shoulder strap.

"Ty Hockenson, keep Nessa on the table's down without entering her cage."

"One link takes the strap while every bone stays with Jade."

Ty's chain tightened. Two cracked ribs pressed into the red groove and held.

Marn looked at the nine broken wax boxes on his card. One live stamp through Cava's crown could restore the landing account, his shifts, and both cutter lines. The same stamp would finish measuring Borren's daughter and two other families.

His name occupied a strip on Ruvan's table now. The wages remained elsewhere.

Marn fed the pay card through Havel's loosened cord and under Sima's taut one.

"Both recovery lines still answer the shift boxes, so the card closes them together."

Sima saw where the card entered her cord.

"Break those boxes and your nine shifts become uncollectable freight dust."

"They already made freight from everyone I meant to collect them for."

Marn passed the end of the card into Cava's severed recovery jaw.

She shifted the capture hook with her three working fingers.

"The jaw can stamp the address severed without touching my shoulder again."

Havel released his cord and put both hands around the jaw handles, holding the teeth over the first wax box.

Sima kept pulling.

"My sister fed two children through those shifts while the account stayed closed."

Marn put his thumb on the ninth box.

"Then keep their names after we stop the account from measuring them."

Cava turned the hook.

The jaw bit through the first three shift boxes. Havel drove the handles down across the next four. Sima's cord fought the card, dragging the final two toward the open table cut.

Marn wrapped the red packing line around his forearm and pulled the boxes back.

The card edge cut through his sleeve. The cord crushed muscle against bone, but the last two boxes reached Cava's jaw.

She closed the teeth.

All nine wax boxes broke.

The two recovery lines lost their shared pull. Havel fell onto the west brace with his jaw still around Todd's staff. Sima's cord recoiled through the table cut and took her shoulder after it.

Ruvan caught Marn's torn name strip before the ruined card followed.

"Marn Vesk remains a living freight worker with nine disputed shifts and one destroyed route claim."

"Record Havel and Sima before either cord decides they count as tools."

Ruvan added both names. Harven closed the first table cut around Havel's line.

Sima lost down when the second cut folded. Her body moved past the pale stake beside the west brace and continued toward Ty's chain.

Jade's damaged eye opened beneath the torn patch.

White blood gathered under the lower lid. Her living hand pointed toward the closer wall stake.

"Her fall should end at that stake, but the death road has chosen Ty's chain."

Ty threw one loop without changing the chain's down. It caught Sima below the ribs and stopped her before the black band could take her shoulder.

The white line remained after her boots found the table.

It wrapped around Ty's chain once, then pulled toward the clinic hall.

Another white line came through the west sleeping rooms. Two more rose from Orra's underside where the stolen foundations had vanished.

Every line turned past Rillhold's downstakes and fastened itself to Ty.
