Chapter 927 - 927: Palla Breaks Meren's Last Answer

  • Next Chapter

The six empty emergency sockets beneath the brewery floor began striking their ceramic caps.

They gave three slow knocks, one close knock, then three more. The same count moved from the west tunnel to the rear gate and stopped beneath Davi's boots.

He dropped to one knee beside the nearest socket. Its copper receiver carried blue paint from West Four's old roof line, chipped where a civilian had forced the borrowed pulse cage through during the evacuation.

"That pattern belongs to Captain Cord's lost team procedure."

Palla left the broken cellar brace and wiped beer from her damaged palm.

"Patterns become public after the wrong machine hears them once."

Fenn climbed down from the brace with a wrench tucked through her belt. One keg still leaked above the shelter lane. Workers had moved every intact barrel aside, leaving the burst one to drip into three wash buckets.

"Her pattern can wait until somebody stops that socket from hitting my floor apart."

Davi pressed his pulse gauge above the ceramic cap. The needle moved three times, held near the center, then moved three more. A second needle inside the gauge stayed flat.

"The signal carries a living pulse, while the return channel carries nothing."

Commander Vey entered through the tunnel with two unarmored soldiers behind him. He wore no Vale suit. A leather sling held his rifle against the ribs that had taken the west wall's last strike.

"Verify the unit mark before West Four answers anything through stolen metal."

Davi turned the gauge so Vey could see its underside. The double maintenance punch appeared in black residue around the probe, followed by a smear of blue roof paint.

The marks belonged to West Four. So had the hinges shipped through the prison road.

Palla crossed the tram line toward the evidence bay. Meren's fourth desk sat on two keg skids beneath a steel bread rack. Its ten cloudy plates lay flat. The lower cargo tooth she broke was still missing, and the empty space beneath the hand socket showed clean rail through the desk.

The black knuckle rested under salvage mesh beside it.

Nessa's recovery order remained wrapped around the bone. Vey's writing named three reasons for crossing. Nessa's grease thumbprint sat beside them with the gap left by her shortened hand.

The paper moved before Palla touched the mesh.

Its loose corner lifted on each slow knock from the brewery sockets. At the close knock, grease inside Nessa's thumbprint softened from the center of the whorl outward. The black knuckle beneath it stayed inert.

Palla opened the mesh ties with the hooked end of Sorn's ruined drawer rail and slid the order free without disturbing the bone.

"This pulse has reached the same living print she left before crossing. Record her alive, but keep her location unverified."

Vey watched the grease settle back into the paper.

"Can a routed prisoner force another person's pulse through that print?"

"The prison can move a living pulse, which proves less than a body standing here. Her unit hinge, her maintenance punch, and her chosen signal support each other. None of them proves who stands beside her."

Davi's gauge struck his knee from inside its case.

The emergency sockets began answering.

Their ceramic caps drew inward instead of knocking outward. Six copper handles turned toward the evidence bay, dragging loose tunnel wire and one rear gate chain across the floor.

Vey caught the nearest handle beneath his boot.

"West Four has issued no acknowledgment through this network."

Palla reached the fourth desk as the empty keeper cup opened around nothing. One surviving groove inside the cup had escaped the break that removed Meren's cargo tooth. Nessa's safety catch once sat across it. The groove now pulled at the recovery order in Palla's hand.

Fenn arrived with her clipped copper keg tag already wound around two fingers.

"That desk ate one corner before you killed its other teeth. Does the missing piece still count as an invitation?"

Palla laid the tag beside the cup. The long cut above six smaller cuts aligned with a fresh line rising inside the groove.

The route serving the hidden owner had heard Nessa's signal.

It was building an answer with West Four's handles, Nessa's order, and the owner mark. If a local hand completed the pressure, the desk would hold Meren as keeper of whatever road carried Nessa's pulse. The cargo tooth could stay broken. Every West Four cage would become a smaller tooth.

Davi kept his boot on the turning handle.

"Show Commander Vey which movement becomes a city claim."

Palla threaded Fenn's tag wire through the survivor groove. She left the copper face above the cup and wrapped the loose end around Sorn's ruined drawer rail.

"Hold the tag flat without putting your hand above the socket."

Fenn hooked the tag with her wrench and leaned back. Palla pulled the drawer rail toward the west tunnel.

The six emergency handles followed.

One cellar brace rose from its socket. The leaking keg shifted on top of it, spilling beer across the shelter lane while workers moved the wash buckets clear.

Palla turned the drawer rail east.

The handles followed again. Davi's boot slid over the floor. At the rear gate, chain links struck the wall as the old defense line pulled toward the desk.

"The answer is using every cage point as Meren's hand. Once the groove closes, the supply road can pull any part carrying West Four's response."

Vey looked past her toward the west tunnel. Families had crossed those sockets while dead armor wore the wall. Nessa had given up the roof line to get them through, then crossed under his written recovery order.

His left hand closed around the rifle sling.

"If we preserve the groove, can Captain Cord follow this signal home?"

"She may find the socket. The owner of those cuts finds it first because his mark is already inside."

"If we break it, what answer reaches her?"

"Her signal arrived. Meren sends nothing back through this desk."

The close knock struck again.

Nessa's paper jumped from Palla's hand and folded over the keeper cup. Vey's recovery authority faced down. The owner impression rose beneath it, pressing both claims together.

Palla trapped the paper with Sorn's drawer rail before the groove could close.

The iron edge split her old palm wound. She changed grip and put her forearm behind the rail, keeping blood away from the socket.

Vey drew his rifle with his free hand and passed it to Davi.

"Break Meren's response groove. Record that order under my authority and Palla's two local witnesses."

Fenn tightened the wrench around her tag wire.

"My brewery counts as one witness after this desk ate enough of it."

Davi set the rifle muzzle against the exposed groove. He adjusted the pulse until its gauge matched the width of the copper tag.

"My shot ends when Palla removes the drawer rail from its line."

Palla pulled.

Fenn's tag flattened inside the groove, forcing the owner impression away from Nessa's order. Davi fired through the exposed brass. The pulse stopped at the back of the cup and left the other nine plates flat.

The keeper groove opened along its length.

Palla drove Sorn's rail through the split. A brass strip tore free, wrapped around the iron, and cut through the tag wire. Fenn fell against a keg skid with the copper tag still caught in her wrench.

All six emergency handles dropped.

The raised cellar brace struck its socket. The leaking keg rolled once and settled against the wall. Davi's gauge stopped inside the last three knocks of Nessa's signal.

Palla lifted the broken brass from the cup. The strip carried half of the fresh owner line and none of West Four's maintenance punch.

The recovery order lay open beside the inert black knuckle. Nessa's grease print remained whole. Vey's three recorded reasons remained readable.

Fenn checked her tag. The long cut and six short cuts still held their original depth.

"Put Captain Cord on the survivor row before another office invents a cleaner word."

Vey took the casualty board pencil from Davi's belt case. He wrote Nessa's name beneath the last confirmed survivor from the west wall. The entry recorded Captain Nessa Cord alive by matched field pulse, with her location unverified and no return available through Meren.

Palla dropped Meren's broken keeper groove into the bucket catching beer from the damaged keg. Davi's receiver waited beside the dead desk, carrying no way to answer Nessa's final knock.
