Chapter 922 - 922: The Finger Pulls On Five Locks

  • Next Chapter

The prison sliver struck the missing third note, and Ty's skull left Jade's hip hard enough to tear her coat.

Her hand caught his jaw above the wash rail, leaving cloth trapped between his teeth while the rest of him pulled in four other directions.

Across Kestra's storehouse, his left hand dragged Tovan's breathing cup toward the east shelves as three ribs tore free of their numbered cord and struck the north wall. His right forearm rolled from shelf six toward the closed service door, wrist first, while the pelvis beneath his folded legs knocked through a crate lid and ground south across the floor.

Five pieces from the opened carrier spindle answered with him.

The blue Oltin arc closed around the recovered West Four hinge. A lock face rose from the flood tooth beneath the wash rail. The black Cross Link joint caught the edge of Dessel's shelf. Tovan's white tube tightened through a square collar, and the red rivet spun inside Kestra's tool tray until its flat side faced Ty.

None of the faces carried a keyhole.

"Pin the white collar before Tovan pays again."

Nessa trapped the tube against her cutter with her left hand. Her numb right arm swung into the rail and stayed there, shoulder unable to pull it clear.

Tovan kept both hands around the gray cup.

"Your hand may leave after this tube remembers which throat hired it, and I get three breaths that belong entirely to me."

Ty spread the four working fingers of his left hand against the rim. The missing middle bone in his index finger bent from inside Jade's fist, but she kept the recovered phalanx against her palm.

The older absence hurt somewhere else.

His right index joint tightened beneath the service door pull. That finger had vanished long before the white observer took a piece from his left hand. Lost Property still carried the old bone as an active absence while Ty carried the ache.

The five locks turned together.

A narrow split opened behind his skull. Through it, Ty saw a laundry cart jammed beneath a heating pipe. The pipe carried five dents and one missing beat. Earth lasted only long enough for Jade to recognize the chipped wheel.

"That cart belongs outside the shelter laundry, and the rear wheel has been broken since Tuesday."

She pulled his skull against her stomach. The split tried to take her coat with him.

The Oltin lock dragged Ty's left hand toward a blue roof where five empty shoulder cages faced an open wall. Nessa caught the same view in the ground face of her recovered hinge.

"West Four stands, so this route shows memory."

Nessa rotated the hinge until its ground face pointed at her chest and blocked the view.

"My soldiers stay home until a scout confirms it."

The black joint pulled Ty's right wrist through the service door. Wood appeared between the frame and wall, followed by half a copper strip with its writing turned away. A shortened staff struck iron beyond it.

Todd was somewhere behind that blow.

Ty flexed the empty right index joint. The black lock pulled harder, taking his forearm between two shelves until bone scraped both edges.

"That direction carries Todd, but the route has already used his laugh once."

Jade braced one boot against the wash trench.

"Leave him as a direction until he answers something the route cannot sell."

The red rivet rolled from Kestra's tray. Two of Ty's loose ribs followed it into a split showing an iron coffin runner and a black cloth wrapped around red metal. A woman's sword guard crossed the view before the split pinched shut.

The fifth lock caught his pelvis.

Its seam showed rain moving sideways across a stone road. Houses hung from cables above the road with their doors facing different versions of down. Ty saw one person cross between them on hands and knees before the seam dragged his lower spine against Kestra's broken crate.

The stranger reached for a rope hanging from the nearest house. When Ty called his pelvis toward Dessel, that entire house dipped and brought its lowest door within inches of the stranger's back. Ty released the call. Kestra's crate split beneath his spine, and the house climbed away from the road again.

No one in the storehouse named that world.

Dessel hooked his good arm over the shelf edge and planted one heel against Ty's pelvis. His left shoulder stayed pressed to the board.

"Your bones can travel when mine stop serving as a shelf decoration, and I would like my good heel returned before the next world pulls."

"Keep your heel there until my pelvis behaves."

Ty called his pelvis half a turn toward Dessel. The fifth lock followed the movement rather than holding its seam. Dirt from the sideways road spilled through and traveled east across Kestra's level floor.

The rescued carrier watched it pass between his burned fingertips. His mouth formed the first Room Four pitch again.

Nessa closed her cutter around the blue lock face before he could hum the second.

"Keep that note inside until we know whether it feeds the pull or only starts it."

The man pressed both palms over his mouth. His nails ended below the quick, leaving no safe place for pressure.

Jade shifted Ty's recovered left phalanx between two fingers.

"Will this left bone close anything useful here?"

Ty felt the old right absence pinch at the question. All five lock faces turned toward Jade's hand, then passed over the phalanx and returned to his empty right index joint.

"That piece belongs to my left hand. The locks passed over it because the older wound begins at my right index joint."

Kestra dragged a numbered chain around Ty's three loose ribs. The red rivet pulled the chain through her fingers until the price tag struck her knuckle.

"Five routes are removing five rented items, and each has crossed three price lines without paying enough to scrape bone from my plaster."

"Bill me after we learn what keeps closing."

"Doors open somewhere. These ugly things keep closing."

Nessa looked from the blue face to the other four. Her cutter could reach only one while her right arm remained dead weight. She knelt, caught its upper cover with the brass tip, and drove her left shoulder under the handle.

The cover lifted.

Curved teeth filled the inside. Their worn edges faced the center of the storehouse rather than the route split behind them. A shallow groove crossed each tooth, polished by something that had been held while it moved.

"These are clamp locks. Their teeth hold several directions around one moving load, and the wear runs inward on every face."

Jade turned Ty's skull enough for him to see the other faces. The Cross Link joint, flood tooth, tube collar, and red rivet had rotated into the same inward angle.

Five locks surrounded an empty patch of floor.

Ty's missing right index finger pulled through his wrist toward that patch. The ache crossed the black lock, entered the white collar, struck the red rivet, passed through the flood tooth, and ended inside Nessa's blue hinge.

Each face closed one tooth, narrowing the route splits until Earth vanished behind Ty's jaw and Todd's copper strip disappeared with the wooden stair. The coffin runner withdrew, Meren's roof folded into the hinge, and the sideways rain left a wet line across Kestra's floor.

No lock opened.

Ty drew his ribs toward the pelvis while Jade pushed his skull down and Tovan held the left hand against the breathing cup. Dessel's heel kept the lower spine from entering the fifth seam. Nessa turned the exposed blue teeth outward with her cutter.

The other four locks followed.

Their pull released one part at a time. Ty's right forearm dropped first. His ribs struck the chain. The pelvis stopped beneath Dessel's boot, and his skull settled into Jade's torn coat.

The five faces remained in a circle around the bare floor.

Nessa slid Kestra's measuring chain between two teeth. Four links entered before the chain stopped against empty space.

"A key turns one lock. Your absence closed five."

Ty opened his right hand. Thumb, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger answered. The index joint pulled toward the center without a bone attached.

"Then my finger completes their grip and gives every lock the same closing hand."

Kestra lifted the chain. Dirt clung to the fourth link and fell sideways again.

The locks stayed shut, holding nothing yet.
