Chapter 900 - 900: The City Says Its Own Name

Vey found the casualty board beneath a dead suit and three pieces of Meren's west wall.

The suit had folded around the board during the collapse. Its fingers covered the bottom row, where somebody had written two missing brewery workers in blue grease. Vey put his boot through the dead wrist and freed the board without wiping either name.

Across the top, old black paint read Oltin Civil Pulse Corps. A newer strip beneath it read West Four, because districts changed faster than boards.

A burial clerk reached for it. "Command needs every confirmed death before the east gate closes."

"Command gets the board after somebody checks the missing against the east outlet."

The clerk held on. "Survivor payments stop when this board arrives without confirmation."

That made the argument useful. Vey let him keep one side and carried the other toward the brewery stairs.

Two workers were forcing steel kegs beneath the cracked pillar. Each keg flattened enough to take weight before they rolled the next one into place. Under the split feeder tooth, Ty's blue striped rib tapped against stone whenever the pillar shifted.

Ty crouched beside it with both arms attached and his right forearm bent around a sickle. "Your advanced city builds surprisingly good beer supports."

The worker on the keg lever looked up. Flour still covered her coat from the tunnel evacuation. "Meren builds brewery equipment. The Vale keeps assigning it other work."

"Meren is the city, then. What do I call the world?"

"Oltin, unless your bones came from somewhere too advanced for names."

Vey heard Jade laugh once behind her hand. The laugh stopped when the loose rib at Ty's side turned toward the fourth desk.

The last keg settled under the pillar. The baker struck it with her rifle stock, waited through one roll from the tanks above, and waved Ty forward.

"Take your buried piece before the support changes its mind."

Ty reached under the tooth. His fingers found the striped rib and pulled it free with a piece of gray root still around one end. Vey watched the pillar rather than the bone. The kegs held.

The burial clerk tried to turn the casualty board toward himself. A brewery worker coming from the east outlet stopped him with two wet fingers against the second missing name.

"Ressa Ton crossed with the rear gate crew. Move her into survivors before her sister loses the housing share."

The clerk rubbed out the blue mark and rewrote Ressa on the upper row. The second name remained below.

Vey read it. "Who last saw Cale Dorr inside the brewery?"

"He went back for the pressure ledger after the first wall shift."

Vey opened his molar channel. "West Four search team checks the brewery office for Cale Dorr and the pressure ledger. Living person first, paper second."

A city voice cut across the channel before his unit answered. "Meren west evacuation remains active. Oltin orbital shelters will receive overflow from the east gate until the district boards reconcile survivors."

Ty glanced toward the speaker bolted under the brewery sign. "That answers both of my geography questions at once."

"The city has been answering questions without you for six sieges," the baker said.

The rubble beyond the west wall moved.

Six hands the size of Vey's came over the broken curb, each gripping a different piece of abandoned armor. The live Vale body had gathered the plates into a shell around itself. Behind it, the severed feeder body dragged black cords from the collapsed tunnel and tied them into the same shell.

Vey's roof line had five rifles and no shared pulse. Three soldiers held the brewery entrance on bruised shoulders. The civilians carrying cages were beyond the east outlet, exactly where he had ordered them, and too far away to rebuild the wall pattern.

The Vale shell lifted a slab and started toward the brewery.

The burial clerk pulled the casualty board against his chest. "I am taking this to the east gate before that thing adds rows."

"Carry it behind the second keg line and keep checking names."

Vey took the board from him long enough to tear off the blank lower strip. He passed the strip to Jade with the grease pencil. "Mark every bone he chooses. My people fire around your writing again."

Jade looked at the strip, then at Ty. "You have been promoted from keg chalk to official scrap paper."

"I expect the benefits package to remain disappointing."

Vey pointed to the open wall. "Your benefits include one controlled lane and five rifles that will shoot anything you leave unmarked."

Ty fitted the recovered rib into his right side. It seated one space above the chained bone and left blue grease across his sternum. "Then keep the lane narrow while I remove its borrowed shell."

Palla hauled the fourth desk behind him using Sorn's bent drawer rail. Three dead plates still clung to the rail from the earlier pile. She hooked the metal through a gap in the Vale shell and planted both feet against the tram track.

"Pull the living body forward and leave the armor here," she called.

Ty ran along Vey's lane. Jade drew a line for each arm and the recovered rib while he moved. The Vale body threw the wall slab. Ty released his left hand before impact and let the slab carry it over his skull.

"Left hand remains chosen above the shell and clear of fire," Jade called.

Five rifles held. The detached hand landed on the creature's back and pried at the cords tying armor together.

Vey saw the first unmarked gap open under its lowest right hand. "West Four fires through the lower gap and nowhere else."

The volley broke two attachment cords. Palla pulled the drawer rail. Dead plates slid backward while the living body kept moving. Its shell opened down the middle.

Ty's attached hand caught one side. His detached hand held the other. He forced the opening wider until Vey could see the severed feeder knot crawling behind the six hands.

"Rear knot carries no blue mark and no living wearer," Jade said.

Vey sent the second volley through it.

The knot broke apart. Armor fell around the Vale body, trapping four of its hands beneath plates it had carried as protection. The baker drove a keg lever between the remaining wrists. Two brewery workers rolled the last steel keg onto the lever and pinned both arms against the curb.

The creature pulled once. The keg dented and stayed.

Vey put three rounds through the exposed joint under its chest. Movement continued in the trapped hands, so he assigned two soldiers to watch the body and kept the rest facing the open wall.

"Immediate threat contained. West Four keeps rifles on the breach until orbital shelter confirms every transfer."

Nobody cheered. The burial clerk found Cale Dorr's name and left it where it was.

The search team answered through Vey's molar. They had found the pressure ledger under the office stairs. Cale was beneath it with a broken leg and enough breath to complain about rescue order.

Vey moved his name to the survivor row himself.

At the intersection, Palla laid the fourth desk flat. Ten metal positions sat beneath its broken surface. One held brewery dust and Ashaiki's burned hair. Another carried Sorn's torn seal and the restraint wire leading through Room Four. The remaining plates bore dirt, ash, blood, or marks from places Vey had never seen.

"This machine watched Meren before it reached your street," Palla said. "Nine other positions watched nine other human worlds."

Vey touched the plate carrying brewery dust. It answered with the same five beats that had moved the dead armor. "The prison behind this road can reach every position again if the carriage opens."

"Yes, and destroying this end blindly may open the rest."

Vey looked at Ty's chalked bones, Jade's marked casualty strip, and the drawer rail in Palla's hands. None belonged to his command. Each had already changed which people on his board remained alive.

"Controlled cooperation continues under West Four firing authority. Quarantine remains armed, movement requires Jade's ownership call, and Palla handles the desk only with two local witnesses present."

Ty turned the bent sickle in his damaged forearm. "That sounds almost like trust after somebody removed every pleasant word."

"It sounds like a commander keeping Meren alive around three dangerous strangers."

Vey opened a channel to the clinic. Nessa answered over the clatter of safety catches being sorted into a wooden box.

"Captain Cord, the foreign route is now a district contamination road. Sever its prison connection before second watch, or legal contamination hold attaches to you until somebody else completes the work."

Nessa took long enough to make him check the channel. "You waited until I had three useful fingers to hand me a cutting job tied to ten worlds."

"You used five fingers to drag that machine into Meren. Three will have to send its prison road away."

The clinic door opened. Nessa came up the steps with her right hand wrapped and the broken safety catch pinched between her thumb and index finger.

She dropped it into the empty keeper cup beneath the desk.

"Then write recovery on the order and find me a saw that understands worlds."
