Chapter 1000: The Roadbacks Choose a New Down
The chain rasped across Jade’s palm. The Angelic collar hauled toward the wheel-cut rib in Dimitri’s custody, pulling Ty’s chest toward the notch. She braced him against her shoulder and guided his right hand to the ridge.
Nessa held the recovered West Four finger in her left fist. Her right arm stayed against her side while the lower fitting dragged at its glove. The shoulder still turned; the wrist kept following the track.
"Tell me where the pull changes before you touch that collar," Nessa said.
Jade answered, "Below the second fitting. This line has taken the weight the others lost."
Nessa marked the pulse cage with her thumb. Three channels had gone slack at different times. A fourth stayed tight around the fitting.
The ridge shifted under Jade’s heel. She widened her stance and moved Ty’s weight higher against her shoulder. His right palm stayed on the stone; the grooved rib sat in the crosscut beneath them, slipping toward the narrow track.
Ty tested the grooved rib with his right palm. "I can push it under the throat. Hold the chain above the ring while I reach."
Jade kept her grip on the chain. "Your hand’s the only one near that collar. It can pull you in with the bone."
"Keep my chest clear. I’ll call the stop," Ty said.
Jade opened her deathward. One path showed her pulling Ty away while the upper field piece stayed buried. The strip tightened; the ledge slid toward the fitting. In another, Nessa’s arm crossed the collar, and the deathward lost her hand beyond the track.
A third path held. Ty braced the throat with his right hand. Nessa turned the collar. Jade set her heel on a narrow seam and took Ty’s weight while the living strip slid off the steel. Nessa’s wrist lost its hold on the wrench.
Jade shut her eye. The route still ended in pain, just in a place she could see.
"One way frees the steel without tearing the band. Your right wrist gives out in it," Jade said.
Nessa looked at the tight channel. "If I leave it, what keeps happening to the others?"
"The load keeps tightening. I can’t see their rooms or tell you who is there," Jade answered.
Nessa rolled her shoulder. The right glove dragged across the stone; her fingers remained curled inside it.
"It’s my arm. Give me the count, Jade. I won’t let you spend it for me," Nessa said.
"Ty can move the load for one pull. The field piece and band will shift together," Jade said.
Ty looked into the fitting. "I’ll set the rib under the throat. My jaw chain holds the outer ring."
"I’ll keep the chain clear. Tell me before your hand crosses the cut," Jade said.
"Keep my chest level. The rest is on my hand," Ty said.
Nessa pointed to a rusted tooth on the lower fitting. "Half a notch back. Then I can get the plate past the fold."
Jade set her heel across the seam and tested the stone before shifting Ty’s weight. The shelf tipped. His knee struck rock; he pushed his foot against the edge and steadied them.
"Keep the marked link in your grip. The rib needs the other side of the throat," Nessa told Jade.
Jade looped Ty’s chain around her forearm. The Angelic collar rested on one link; the Reaper’s call ring sat next to it, cold. Its bargain required a clean road. The white claim still crossed this one.
Nessa set the recovered finger on the shelf and took the wrench in her left hand. She leaned through her shoulder. The fitting resisted, then moved half a notch. Pale channels loosened below the shelf. The iron ring held.
Ty lowered his right palm to the groove. His ribs pressed against Jade’s wrist as he leaned over the crosscut. The loose bone scraped under the throat and caught the lower tooth. The ridge stopped rolling.
Under their feet, one channel slackened as another took the load. Both settled; the pulse cage tapped Nessa’s arm.
"The other routes are unloading. Hold the rib while I lift the band," Nessa said.
"I’ll hold until you call the release. Keep your wrist outside my hand," Ty said.
The living strip folded around one half of the broken upper West Four finger. Steel showed through the tissue; the other half remained buried beyond the fold. A straight pull would drag the strip across the exposed half’s sharp edge.
Nessa leaned in. The right glove slid toward the collar. Jade offered her forearm as support and waited until Nessa looked at her.
"Take my forearm while you lift it. Tell me when to let go," Jade said.
Nessa set the recovered lower finger against the plate notch. Its paired punches aligned with the mark on the exposed upper half. She followed them with her left thumb while Jade supported her injured arm.
"I’ll draw the upper piece sideways with my forearm. Hold the fitting open while I lift," Nessa said.
"The collar is open. Set your shoulder, then take the pull on your count," Jade said.
Nessa pushed along the plate. The field steel shifted one nail’s width. The band turned with it, and she stopped before the next punch reached the lip.
Nessa checked the band. "Another wrap catches the lower corner. I need to lift before I pull."
She rolled her shoulder and raised the steel. The living band slid over its stamped edge. The freed half settled beside Nessa’s arm; the other remained buried in the ridge. She lifted the recovered lower finger from the notch and set it beside the fragment. Their punch marks lined up.
Nessa tried to close her right fingers around the freed steel. The glove dragged them shut; when she raised her forearm, the shoulder rolled and Jade steadied it above her knee. Nessa checked the paired marks first, then looked down at the hand.
"The marks match. Don’t tell me the hand is fine because I can still lift it," Nessa said.
"I won’t. I can keep your shoulder clear while we move, if you choose," Jade said.
"Keep it clear. My wrist won’t take a tool until I test it," Nessa said.
The Angelic collar snapped tight against Ty’s chain. It pulled toward Dimitri’s rib, dragging links through Jade’s palm. Ty’s chest turned away from the ridge. His hand and loose rib held the crosscut.
Jade followed the line with her deathward. The collar carried Ty’s name toward the marked bone, then reached back along the chain for the body that had left it behind.
"The claim is using your name through that rib. Keep your weight on this ridge," Jade said.
Ty kept his palm against the stone. "Dimitri has the rib. I still decide what this body does."
Ty pressed his right palm flat. The chain ran out of slack. The white collar pulled; his jaw stayed beside Jade’s hand.
She saw two routes cross near his chest: the Angelic claim and the load beneath the living band. Beyond them, the deathward showed no ending she could trust.
"That ring stays cold until the road is clear. The Angelic claim still crosses it," Jade said.
Nessa checked the pulse cage. The local fitting had stopped drawing, though the far channels kept moving. Her right hand hung at the wrist while the shoulder still obeyed.
"That road still reaches West Four. I can’t leave it tied to my city," Nessa said.
The iron ring loosened. A seam opened sideways beneath it, revealing a road laid across the one under their feet. The ridge began to tip toward that new line.
Jade lost her foothold. Ty dropped against her shoulder, and Nessa caught the wall with her left hand. The recovered lower finger and freed upper half skated off the shelf and vanished beneath the tipping ridge. The other upper half stayed buried. Her right fingers remained curled inside the glove.
Behind the ridge, migration plates scraped over their pegs. Each groove ended at one of twelve marked universes. The needle crossed the last carved route and stopped between two blank cuts.
"No plate names that direction. We’re between the marked routes," Nessa said.
On the far side, a hand lifted a narrow brass tuning plate from the rim, separate from the twelve migration plates. It turned the plate until its notched edge matched the seam’s new angle, then withdrew before the gap closed.
She reopened the deathward. The kitchen from the earlier vision lay across the ceiling of a moving roadback. A child reached toward the table while the knife rack slid against its leather catch.
The roadback turned beneath them. Tie lines drew tight as the ridge found a new down. Jade kept Ty’s chain looped around her forearm. The Angelic pull pointed toward Dimitri’s wheel-cut rib; the moving road drew the other way.
Ty put his right palm against the new slope. "I need the wheel-cut rib back from Dimitri. This road’s moving, so we take it until I can reach him," he said.
Jade shifted her boot toward the kitchen in the vision. "I saw that child reach for the table. I’m following the bell before the rack drops," she said.
Nessa turned toward the groove leading back to West Four. "I’ll stay until we cut the prison road off my city. After that, neither of you picks my way home," she said.
Ty stepped beside Jade, testing the new slope with his right palm. Nessa kept a pace behind and an eye on the groove leading back to West Four.
The direction bell struck. The new road carried them toward it.
