From Dying in the Apocalypse to Being Chased by My S-Class Ex-Fiancé!
Chapter 97: A Pair Of Crimson Eyes!
Immediately they all spoke, as if on cue, the three of them immediately began pleading for their lives.
"We aren’t from any rookie group!"
"Yes, yes! We’re not!"
"We don’t even know those people!" Jake hurriedly added, his words tumbling out as quickly as he could manage. "They just captured us and tied us up! They were about to kill us before you guys showed up and saved our lives!"
"Well.. that’s if you don’t kill us yourselves," Lara muttered under her breath.
Both Ethan and Jake immediately turned to glare at her.
Way to go, Lara.
Seriously, of all the things she could have said right now, she had somehow chosen the one sentence that could get them killed faster.
The second cloaked man finally reached up and removed the covering over his face and head, revealing features almost identical to the man standing beside him. Ethan stared for a moment before realization slowly dawned on him.
They’re twins.
The resemblance was impossible to miss.
Both men had long crimson hair that fell around their faces in a strikingly similar style, while their eyes were an unusual, piercing shade of grey that seemed capable of seeing straight through a person’s thoughts. The only obvious difference between them was that the second twin had several black streaks running through his crimson hair, giving his otherwise identical appearance a slightly more dangerous edge.
They were, without a doubt, strikingly gorgeous twins.
Not that that matters right now!
Ethan immediately forced his attention away from their appearances and back toward the actual problem.
The twin with the mixed-colored hair stepped forward, his expression completely devoid of amusement as he spoke with absolute authority.
"Oh, we will."
Ethan’s heart dropped.
The man continued before any of them could react.
"But we can’t decide your fate ourselves yet. We’ll take you to our leader."
Ethan immediately tensed.
They have a leader?
His mind went into overdrive.
If these two were already this fierce and intimidating, then just how terrifying could the person they called their leader possibly be?
A walking death bomb?
A human-shaped disaster?
And they wanted to take Ethan, Lara, and Jake directly to him?
Absolutely not.
There was no fucking way.
Ethan’s survival instincts kicked into overdrive as he desperately searched for a way out. His gaze briefly shifted toward Lara and Jake, and without making it too obvious, he gave them a subtle signal to go along with whatever he said next.
They both caught it.
Ethan then looked back at the twins and forced himself to appear calm.
"We have no problem with meeting your leader," he said carefully, keeping his voice as steady as possible. "Just untie us, please."
The twin didn’t hesitate.
With nothing more than a casual flick of his hand, the ropes binding Ethan, Lara, and Jake were instantly sliced apart.
The severed ropes dropped to the floor.
Ethan stared at his freed wrists for half a second.
It worked!
Or at least, he thought it had.
What Ethan didn’t realize was that the twin had not been fooled by him in the slightest.
Ryker had seen straight through his little act from the moment Ethan opened his mouth. He knew exactly what Ethan was planning, and instead of stopping him, the crimson-haired twin seemed almost amused by the prospect.
Because Ryker wasn’t someone who would reject a little chase.
Beside him, Ryder rolled his eyes the moment he noticed his brother’s playful expression.
What a child.
Neither of them made any attempt to stop the trio.
And the moment Ethan felt the ropes fall away completely, he barely had enough time to inhale before turning toward his friends.
He mouthed a single word.
"Run."
The three of them immediately took off.
They ran like their lives depended on it.
Because, quite literally, their lives depended on it.
Ethan didn’t bother looking back. Neither did Lara or Jake. They simply sprinted through the facility at full speed, their footsteps echoing loudly against the metallic floors as they desperately searched for somewhere, anywhere, that could put enough distance between them and those terrifying twins.
Ethan really should have suspected something.
They all should have suspected it when the twins simply gave way and allowed them to run out. They had deliberately given them an opportunity to escape.
They hadn’t chased them immediately, nor had they attacked them.
They had simply stood there and watched as the three of them ran straight out of sight.
But none of them thought to question it.
Not when the only thing occupying their minds was survival.
They ran through one corridor after another, taking turns whenever they saw an opening, moving so quickly that Ethan eventually lost sight of Lara and Jake.
He didn’t even know when they had parted ways.
One moment they had all been running together, and the next, Ethan was alone.
He continued forward anyway.
Unfortunately, there was just one small problem.
He had absolutely no idea where he was going.
Ethan slowed down only after his lungs began burning, his chest rising and falling heavily as he finally glanced around.
He was still inside the research facility.
At least, he was almost certain he was.
However, this section looked completely different from the warehouse they had escaped from. The layout was unfamiliar enough that Ethan couldn’t even begin to figure out which direction he had come from.
He turned slowly, scanning his surroundings while trying to catch his breath.
Where the hell am I?
He took another cautious step backward as he continued looking around, hoping to spot a familiar hallway or perhaps one of the signs Jake had used to navigate them earlier.
Nothing.
Ethan swallowed as he took another step backward.
Then another.
Until his back suddenly collided with something unmistakably hard causing him to freeze.
The surface behind him was warm.
And solid.
Very solid.
His breath caught as an uncomfortable realization crept through him.
That wasn’t a wall.
Ethan slowly turned around.
And the moment his eyes lifted, the breath seized from his lungs.
A pair of burning crimson eyes were staring directly into his own.
His gaze instinctively travelled across the man’s face, taking in every sharp feature before dropping lower, scanning his figure.
And Ethan had only one stupid thought at that moment.
This was officially the most dangerously hottest and handsome man he had seen since transmigrating!
