Chapter 623: Chapter 622: Union of Swords (7)
“Someone has already gone to buy the medicine. It’ll be here in a little while…”
Su Li had just started speaking when, for some reason, Alice suddenly began to cry again.
After she started crying, the faint sobs of other children could be heard as well.
Song Shengfu grew agitated again. “Shut up! Cry again and I’ll kill you all!”
The other children seemed to be frightened into silence, but Alice kept crying, her sobs growing louder.
Song Shengfu raised his hand and slapped Alice across the face. Hearing this, an idea sparked in Su Li’s mind, and she spoke up.
“She just doesn’t understand what we’re saying. Why don’t I sing her a song to calm her down?”
“Singing?” Song Shengfu was baffled.
“She might not understand our words, but music is a universal language. If I sing, maybe she’ll calm down and stop annoying you.”
Su Li added, “We have to wait for the medicine anyway, so I’ll just give it a try. If it doesn’t work, I’ll stop immediately.”
Song Shengfu sneered at the idea but said dismissively, “Fine, then sing.”
‘If she sings, maybe Xiao Hong will feel a little better,’ he thought. ‘Maybe she won’t be so scared every time she sees me.’
‘All I want is to be with her, to build a life with her. Why does she have to be so afraid of me?’
While Song Shengfu was lost in thought, Su Li really did begin to sing.
And miraculously, after a couple more sobs, the foreign child slowly stopped crying.
Song Shengfu snorted coldly. ‘Don’t take me for a fool,’ he thought. ‘I know exactly what’s going on. I obviously chose the right targets. That garbled chatter from outside… I couldn’t understand a word. They must be foreigners.’
As Song Shengfu thought this, he stared at Alice with icy eyes, half-listening to Su Li’s song.
He had never heard the song Su Li was singing and couldn’t sing along, but it was pleasant enough.
He found himself thinking this involuntarily, letting his guard down slightly, not paying close attention to what Su Li was actually singing.
Su Li didn’t sing for long, stopping after about three minutes. When she finished, her palms were sweaty.
She didn’t particularly like singing. In her past life, she had only been to karaoke once and had never sung in front of anyone. Still, she could manage a couple of popular classics from later years.
Su Li sang, and she bravely altered some of the lyrics.
Seeing that Song Shengfu hadn’t noticed, she mixed spoken words in a foreign language into the normal lyrics, calling out to Alice.
The reason Alice had calmed down so quickly was because she had finally heard a familiar language.
Even though it was delivered through song, she quickly fell silent to listen intently. She was even smart enough to use the sound of her own sobs to pass along the most critical information.
Su Li’s negotiation, her singing—every moment was being clearly recorded by the cameras. Ling Zhen gazed at Su Li’s back, their eyes filled with admiration.
The people who had come with Curry, who had initially been displeased about Cook being knocked unconscious, finally shut their mouths after hearing Su Li’s song, a look of astonishment on their faces.
And the expert negotiator who was finally brought in—an old senior of Captain Zhang’s team—also nodded repeatedly after hearing Su Li’s last couple of sentences and her singing. He decided to let Su Li stay and not switch negotiators.
Su Li was unaware of what was happening outside. After she finished her song, she took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself and started talking to Song Shengfu again.
The conversation was intermittent, with pauses on her end or breaks from Song Shengfu’s side, but the situation never spiraled out of control.
Because they were all waiting for the medicine, waiting for the delivery that had been agreed upon.
The medicine was actually ready, but because the timing wasn’t right yet, they were still stalling.
During Su Li’s fragmented conversation, the people Wu Sheng had brought coordinated with Mr. Zhang, slowly closing in on Song Shengfu’s house.
Once everything was in place, Wu Sheng nodded at Su Li, and only then was the medicine delivered.
“The medicine’s here! It’s been delivered! Song Shengfu, how should I get it to you?” Su Li asked.
“Just toss it in,” Song Shengfu replied immediately.
“But the wall around your house is too high, and the medicine is light. I’m too far away, I can’t throw it that far. Can I get a little closer?” Su Li asked.
“You can, but only you,” Song Shengfu answered.
Su Li agreed. “Of course. I’ll walk a bit closer and toss the medicine in through the gate, okay?”
“Fine. But I’m warning you, don’t try any tricks. I’ve got a kitchen knife right at someone’s neck.”
Song Shengfu warned Su Li viciously as he slowly moved to a position where he could see the gate.
“I know. I won’t do anything rash. I’m coming over now. I’m moving slowly.”
Su Li took a deep breath, raised her hand holding the medicine, and deliberately made noise as she approached step by step.
Following the sound of Su Li’s footsteps, Wu Sheng hugged the wall, inching closer to the gate.
Su Li could see Wu Sheng’s movements in her peripheral vision. She struggled to keep her expression neutral as she walked into Song Shengfu’s line of sight.
Su Li could see the flicker of a lighter from inside the house, marking Song Shengfu’s position.
Song Shengfu stood in the dark, watching as Su Li, illuminated by a flashlight, appeared before him.
“Alright. Take two steps forward and toss the medicine in.”
Su Li was truly alone. Song Shengfu breathed a sigh of relief.
Su Li nodded, took two steps forward, and threw the medicine.
The medicine went in, but she didn’t throw it far enough. It landed just a step inside the gate.
“Ah, I’m sorry, that was a bad throw,” Su Li apologized hastily. “Would you mind coming out to get it?”
Song Shengfu’s expression soured, but seeing that the medicine was inside, he thought he could grab it and shut the gate at the same time, so he decided to retrieve it himself.
“I’ll get it myself. You turn around and walk away. No funny business.”
“Okay.” Su Li obediently turned around.
Song Shengfu cautiously extinguished the lighter and crouched slightly, moving forward. He took one step, observed, took another. Detecting nothing unusual, he soon neared the gate.
He cast one last wary glance around, and seeing nothing amiss, immediately went to pick up the medicine.
There was still nothing out of the ordinary when he reached the medicine. Song Shengfu let out another breath of relief, hastily stuffed the medicine away, and was about to shut the gate.
That’s when everything changed.
Alice, who had been quiet all this time, suddenly let out a short scream, then ducked her head and bit down hard on Song Shengfu’s arm.
“AH!” His scream of pain followed.
Suddenly, a bright light flooded his vision.
Song Shengfu instinctively flicked his lighter open. But in the blink of an eye, with a whoosh of air and a flash of light, a sharp pain shot through his wrist.
A dagger had been thrown, striking him squarely on the wrist.
“ARGH!” Song Shengfu shrieked. The lit lighter he used as a threat and his last resort fell from his grasp toward the ground.
The moment the lighter hit the ground, the kerosene below would ignite. It was mixed with methamidophos, and the consequences would be unthinkable.
A crazed look filled Song Shengfu’s face, ready to take everyone down with him. But before the twisted smile could fully form, something flashed before his eyes.
The next second, he saw the lighter, which was about to hit the ground, get caught by someone who had lunged forward.
CLICK. The lighter’s flame vanished. The world spun before Song Shengfu’s eyes.
