Chapter 705: Soul-Crushing Choice
"Those small clans have yielded," Veylara stated, her voice quiet enough that it stayed between the four of them. "Salt, herbs, labor, and complete border obedience. They surrendered their independence without hesitation."
Sol slowly opened both eyes, meeting that fathomless sapphire gaze under the dappled shade of the elm.
"Nothing unexpected," he said softly, his crimson eyes gleaming with confident certainty. "No sane one would look at a mountain that just swallowed four armies and think about climbing it. They still have some brain and know who holds the sky now."
Veylara looked down at him for a long, quiet moment.
The dappled sunlight filtering through the sprawling canopy of the ancient elm dancing patterns of gold and shadow across Sol’s relaxed, sun-tanned features.
The more she looked at him, the deeper that quiet, intoxicating heat coiled in her chest.
She loved that look on him... that effortless, brazen confidence that treated the mortal terrors of this world like dirt beneath his feet.
To the elders, to the conquered chieftains, and to the weeping envoys, she was an untouchable, ascended sovereign of the Fifth Layer.
But to this rogue, she was simply his woman, someone he had pinned to the bark of a willow and dragged back from the jaws of heaven itself.
Around them, the bustling symphony of the tribe... the rhythmic, ringing thud-clang of stone-hammers against ironwood, the boisterous barking of squad captains directing haulers, the distant, carefree laughter of children racing through the alleyways all blended together into a distant, peaceful hum.
Standing beneath the golden autumn leaves of the ancient elm, watching the dappled sunlight wash over Sol’s sun-bronzed skin, for the briefest of heartbeats, a rare, tender ache touched Veylara’s heart.
She found herself wishing, with an intensity that almost frightened her, that this warmth, this sun, and this simple peace could simply freeze in place.
She could cast aside the heavy mantle of leadership, and spend an entire lifetime right here... sitting beside this man, watching her daughter laugh, breathing the crisp scent of nature without waiting for the next horn of war to sound, sparing them from the endless grinding wheels of blood and conquest.
Yet beneath that serene exterior, the sharp, calculating mind of an apex ruler remained wide awake.
She knew better than anyone that peace in this savage realm was an illusion snatched only with overwhelming strength.
Beyond the towering ironwood canopies and the mountain ridges of the Great Orrath, the world was unimaginably vast, treacherous, and filled with greater storms waiting to sweep across their quiet basin that would make the Coalition’s war look like a squabble between children.
Her mind drifted back to the sacred oral histories passed down through the bloodline of the Warchief.
She remembered the dying words of their First Ancestor who had been hunted, battered, and forced to flee across mountain ranges to settle in this savage corner of the Great Orrath.
The Veynar had not always been a backwater forest clan scraping for roots and salt.
Long ago, their bloodline had roamed the vast, resource-rich heavenly lands in the far south where the primal essence was so thick it fell as morning dew, where ancient spirit-beasts the size of mountain ranges roamed the plains, and resources so abundant that tribes could cultivate legends under every sunrise.
But after a catastrophic defeat, their ancestors had been forced to run for their lives, shedding oceans of blood just to drag the broken remnants of their people into this isolated, frost-bitten northern peripheral wilderness, hiding behind the natural boundary of the great Orrath to avoid total annihilation.
From their initial world shattering strength to being confined to Layer 4, for hundreds of winters, every generation of Veynar chieftains had bashed their heads against the wall of Layer 5, watching their bloodline wither, their ancestral glory fading into myth, until the dream of ever returning to those heavenly lands became nothing more than a bedtime fairy tale whispered to dying elders.
Veylara had carried that agonizing weight since the day she took the spear.
As the greatest prodigy her bloodline had seen since the First Ancestor... a warrior who had carved a bloody, uncompromising path despite being surrounded by mortal enemies on all sides... she had spent her prime suffocating in silent despair.
Reaching the fifth layer was something she hadn’t dared to dream of accomplishing in this lifetime. The regional laws and the thin essence of the northern basin simply forbade it.
Before Sol appeared, she believed she was doomed to an impossible, soul-crushing choice.
One choice was to remain here in the Orrath region, stuck at Layer 4, growing old and brittle, watching her channels slowly calcify until she rotted into the dirt like every chieftain before her watching her beloved clan being destroyed by surrounding tribes or be swallowed whole when a stronger beast tide rolled over the forest.
To a woman of her pride and unyielding talent, that slow, powerless decay was worse than death.
The other choice had been equally unbearable: to abandon it all. To cast off the chieftain’s mantle, leave the borders behind, and venture into the lethal unknown as a lone wanderer in search of a miracle.
But how could she? Kira was here. Her daughter... her heart and her blood... was here.
Thousands of loyal clansmen who had bled for her, trusted her, had placed their faith, their families, and their lives in her hands.
The moment she turned her back, the Veynar would have been torn to pieces by the surrounding wolves.
She could never abandon them.
So she had remained trapped, starving her soul to keep her people alive, speding moons drowning in the bitter realization of an impossible dilemma.
Until him.
Her sapphire eyes softened, twin pools of liquid light tracking the slow rise and fall of Sol’s chest.
This shameless, infuriating outsider had stepped out of the wilderness, shoved his fists into the jaws of fate, and ripped the sky wide open. He had pulled them from the jaws of almost certain defeat of surrounding tribes, and then forced the heavens to yield and pushed her towards layer 5.
He hadn’t just saved her life beneath the willows; he had reignited the fire that winters of isolation had smothered to ash.
Now, she didn’t have to choose.
