Chapter 692: Comfort Was Part Of Deal
For once, the eternal boredom etched into Teshar’s weathered face had softened into the quiet satisfaction of a man who finally had more raw material than his hearths could smelt.
Leaning against a stack of freshly planed ironwood beams near the yard, Sol stood casually with an unbothered grin, peeling the skin from a sweet mountain pear like fruit with the tip of a small bone paring knife.
He wore a dark, sleeveless leather jerkin over loose linen trousers, the sapphire hilt of the Dreadwing blade resting against his hip in its newly polished sheath.
While the entire camp ran around with ledgers, ropes, and timber, the Supreme Spear was living proof of the arrangement he’d struck with the Chief: he was the unmovable boulder at the center of the yard, soaking in the sun, utterly devoid of chores.
Sol spent his days doing exactly what he had promised: taking it easy, eating the best cuts of the roasted meat, and watching the world bend to Veylara’s will.
He didn’t meddle with the grain ledgers, and he sure as hell didn’t sit in on the endless council sessions where Elder Bran argued with the supply captains about hide shipments.
When Sol strolled through the bustling thoroughfares, his Dreadwing blade resting across his shoulder and his dark hair catching the breeze, the entire compound subtly shifted its rhythm around him.
The Veynar warriors would snap their fists to their chests with fierce, grinning salutes.
The conquered prisoners would instantly drop their tools, crouching to their knees, some extreme one even pressed their forehead against the dirt until the heavy crunch of his boots faded down the gravel path.
His reputation as the reaper who had decapitated their Layer 4 champions with bare hands had grown into something mythical, a dark shield that kept the peace far more effectively than a thousand written decrees.
"You look a bit too comfortable for a man whose name is being used to threaten twelve different clan councils," a crisp, amused voice called out.
Sol glanced sideways to see Zeyra approaching, a thick hide-bound ledger tucked under one arm and a carved ink-reed in hand.
She wore her fitted scout leathers, her dark hair tied back in a neat warrior’s knot, but her sharp features carried none of the tension that used to tighten her jaw during the war.
"Comfort was part of the deal," Sol said, slicing a wedge of pear and tossing it into his mouth. "Veylara gets the ultimate power, the elders get their ledgers, and I get to make sure the fruit doesn’t go bad. Division of labor."
Zeyra stopped beside him, leaning her shoulder lightly against the timber stack, the faint, pleasant scent of dried sage and sun-warmed skin drifting off her. "Well, your division of labor is terrifying the captive delegation. The third son of the Zharun chief passed by here ten minutes ago, saw you chewing fruit, and nearly tripped over his own boots trying to avoid catching your eye."
"Good," Sol chuckled, wiping juice from his chin with the back of his thumb. "Saves me from having to get up."
Across the wide dirt thoroughfare, a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the clamor of a dozen passing heavy steps.
"Tie the lashings twice, not once, you brainless fools! If those timber joints split on the way, I’ll have you carry the granite on your own backs!"
Kira stood atop an overturned supply crate near the main storehouse, her arms crossed firmly over her chest, with a polished bone dagger hanging from her belt.
Her cheeks were flushed with energy, her dark eyes flashing with fierce, youthful authority as she directed a labor crew of conquered Marauder warriors loading a supply line.
Every time one of the burly captives hesitated, she gave them a look sharp enough to skin a deer, and they moved twice as fast.
Sol smiled faintly, watching the girl command the yard with the unmistakable, proud strut of her mother’s bloodline. "Looks like Kira found her calling."
"She’s been at it since the dawn horns blew," Zeyra noted with a soft, affectionate scoff. "She made the Zerith scribes recount the hides count three times before she’d sign off on the convoy. The girl is determined to prove she can run half the basin by herself."
"Runs in the family," Sol murmured, his eyes casually drifting past the bustling square toward the high, imposing timber facade of the Great Lodge at the top of the stone steps.
Even from across the busy plaza, the atmosphere around the lodge was dense, steady, and profound.
A quiet, subterranean warmth pulsed continuously from the high hall, washing over the settlement like the steady heat of a midsummer afternoon.
Veylara’s Fifth Layer aura was a constant, subtle reminder woven into the very air of the valley... a shield of sovereign authority that made every elder walk with his spine straight and kept every conquered heart docile in its chest.
She was up there now, receiving the oaths of border captains, dividing the conquered territories, and laying the stone foundations of something that would outlast the winter.
And at night, when the heavy timber doors closed and the torches burned down to embers, the sovereign would cast aside the mantle of the empress, letting her hair fall wild and her breath hitch beneath his hands, surrendering to the relentless, possessive fire that had dragged her beyond the limits of the world.
Just thinking about the intense pleasure of last night made Sol feel excited again, he stretched his broad arms over his head, hearing his spine pop with a satisfying crack, before taking another slow bite of the sweet fruit.
The camp was bustling, the resources were overflowing, the borders were secured, and the future was completely wide open. For a man who had been running around since he came here, this quiet, sun-drenched vitalization was a luxury he had fully earned... and of course, he intended to savor every single sun that rose over the basin.
