Chapter 688: Detterent

Veylara turned her head, looking at him with narrowed, sapphire eyes. A slow, tired smirk bloomed on her lips.

"If you have something to say," she murmured, her voice dropping into that private, dangerous tone, "say it closer."

Sol stopped at the base of the hearth platform, looking up at her with an easy, unbothered grin.

"Nothing to say," Sol replied, his crimson eyes gleaming with cold confidence. "Just making sure you remember who laid the bricks for that high seat."

Zephyra handed the steaming bowl of soup to Veylara with a soft, knowing chuckle. "Careful, Sol. She may be your woman in the dark, but in the light of the sun, she has three whole territories to bend to her will."

"And who handed her those territories?" Sol smirked, leaning against an ironwood pillar and crossing his arms, not bothered by her high status in the slightest.

After all, he had dared to take an actual goddess against the cosmic rules; a mortal tribal chief, even one standing at the newly minted Fifth Layer, wasn’t about to make him tremble.

Veylara took a slow sip from the wooden bowl, steam curling around her sharp cheekbones. The rigidness in her posture softened as the warm soup hit her throat, the heat easing the lingering tightness in her newly widened spiritual channels.

She lowered the bowl and looked at him plainly, without the grand rhetoric she had fed the clan outside.

"I called you in here because the easy part is over," Veylara said, lowering the bowl to the stone mantle. Her voice lost its playful edge, hardening into the pragmatic rasp of a general looking across a mapped border.

"The Coalition leaders are dead, their vanguards slaughtered, and we marched our spears straight through their camps over the last few days. We took them by storm, broke their gates, and planted our banners in their dirt. But conquered lands do not stay conquered on fear alone."

She stepped away from the hearth, walking down the two low stone steps to stand directly in front of him.

"The coalition strongholds still hold massive stores of supplies... granaries packed with salted dire-meat, cellars of dry herbs, and armories overflowing with weapons.

Even though we broke their warriors and forced their chiefs to kneel, managing thousands of conquered clansmen is a different beast entirely.

We have to keep a tight fist on those resources to prevent rebellion before it even has the breath to start."

She crossed her arms, the dark crimson leather of her tunic pulling taut across her shoulders.

"Right now, the remnants are terrified because the blood on our boots is still fresh. They saw our spears tear through their palisades, and they know what happened to anyone who drew a bow. But fear is a short-lived leash. Give an empty belly three days of cold gruel and a dark corner to whisper in, and fear turns right back into bloody defiance

Her sapphire eyes locked onto his, burning with fierce, calculating intent.

"We cannot leave those stockpiles in the hands of bitter local captains, nor can we bleed our own front-line fighters by stationing them as guards in every outpost. We need to secure those supply depots, audit their stores, and distribute the resources strictly.

"We have to make it brutally clear: under the Veynar, obedience means full bellies and secure walls, but a single whisper of mutiny means the entire bloodline gets put to the torch," Veylara said, her jaw tight, holding his gaze with uncharacteristic care.

"Sorry if I acted out of the plan, but I need your fear, your name, and that monstrous reputation to keep those conquered bastards in line. That is why I bestowed you with the title of Supreme Spear."

She exhaled softly, the fierce edge in her tone dipping into something surprisingly conciliatory. "And don’t worry, you don’t actually need to run around doing garrison work. We’ll handle the logistics, the marching, and the administration ourselves.

You can just kick back and relax. It’s just a deterrent... a bone seal stamped on their necks. It’s totally up to you if you ever feel like lifting a finger."

Before she could step back or finish her breath, Sol moved.

He didn’t bother offering a verbal reply. Instead, his arms shot out, wrapped around her waist, and yanked her entire body forward, pulling her tight against his broad chest in a sudden, bruising bear hug.

Veylara instantly stiffened.

Her breath hitched in her throat, every corded muscle along her back locking up on pure instinct.

For as long as she had lived, no living soul had dared grab the Warchief of the Veynar so casually, let alone drag her into a tight, possessive hold in the middle of the Great Council Hall with the High Shaman standing not five paces away.

The newly forged Fifth Layer essence beneath her ribs hummed with violent, hair-trigger shock, ready to blow the roof off the lodge.

Sol didn’t give a damn about the hum. His arms gripped her tightly, holding her pinned against his ribs until the initial rigidity in her spine began to soften against his heat.

Slowly, Sol leaned his head down, his crimson eyes staring directly into her wide, startled sapphire gaze.

For a few long, quiet heartbeats, neither of them moved. He looked past the sovereign mask, past the tactical calculations of conquered strongholds and border garrisons, seeing only the woman who had clawed her way out of the dirt and shattered the sky with him beneath the willows.

Then, with an easy, crooked grin, Sol leaned in and planted a firm, blunt peck right on her parted lips.

Smack.

He pulled back just as quickly, releasing his grip on her hips and taking a lazy half-step back, his hands casually dangling around.

"Fine by me," Sol said, shrugging his shoulders as if agreeing to a turn at the campfire spit. "Use the name however you want, Chief. You’re my woman now anyway. If dangling my reputation out there keeps those conquered dogs from barking and saves you a headache, paint my face on every gate in the valley for all I care."
