Chapter 679: What Did You Do?
"Oh, A fern leaf, Sol?" she asked, her voice dropping into a dry, flat murmur, as she looked at his lower body. "The savior of the Veynar, reduced to dressing like a swamp creature."
Sol grunted, crossing his arms. "Be glad I bothered tying anything on at all. If it was just me, you and the trees, I wouldn’t have wasted the vine."
Behind them, Zephyra let out a dry, rattling cough, her ceremonial robes were torn at the hem, smeared with mud and dirt, but the High Shaman didn’t seem to care. Her milky eyes were fixed on Veylara, taking in the profound, settled stillness of the Fifth Layer.
"Mock his modesty all you like, Warchief," Zephyra said, leaning lightly against her staff. "Had he not jumped into the teeth of that collapse, you wouldn’t be standing here to critique his wardrobe. The decree of this land almost swallowed you whole."
Veylara’s expression tightened, the fleeting amusement vanishing from her face like smoke in the wind.
Her sapphire eyes flicked upward toward the night sky, where the stars now shone cold and untroubled, showing no sign of the crimson-black void that had threatened to erase her existence moments ago.
"The decree," Veylara said slowly. Her hand rose, fingers curling into a fist as she felt the foreign, heavy density humming within her chest. "It was coming down to crush me. I felt the ceiling. It was cold... absolute. Then it broke." She turned her gaze back onto Sol, her eyes narrowing with sharp, calculating intensity. "What did you do?"
"Nothing fancy," Sol lied cleanly, not even blinking. There’s no way he was gonna tell anyone about that mysterious compass, except Isylia. "I grabbed your ankles and dumped every scrap of vitality I had into your core. Whatever was choking you couldn’t take the pressure and gave up. Don’t look at me like that... I don’t know the politics of the clouds. I just know when someone needs a push."
Zephyra’s mouth opened slightly, but she closed it just as quickly. The old mystic knew better than anyone that something far beyond mere vitality had intervened tonight, but she wasn’t foolish enough to pry into the secrets of a man who could slap away the sky’s wrath. Some mysteries kept clans alive; others brought ruin if spoken aloud.
"Whatever pushed it," Zephyra murmured softly, "the northern basin is rewritten. Layer 4 Peak was the absolute wall. Every tribe believed the ancestors had sealed the higher realms away from mortal men. Now... you have crossed the river."
"I know," Veylara replied, though her eyes were still locked at Sol.
Seeing the way the two of them had locked eyes... their bodies getting closer and closer, and the air between them thick with more than residual essence... Zephyra cleared her throat.
"Ahem."
Both Sol and Veylara turned their heads a fraction. The High Shaman stood a few paces away, pale robes already half-turned toward the path that led back to the settlement.
A faint, knowing curve touched her lips, but her white eyes remained carefully neutral.
"You two continue," she said dryly. "I’ll go ahead and see the situation over there in the tribe."
Before either of them could form a reply, she slipped away into the shadows of the trees, footsteps already fading.
The cool night breeze swept through the weeping willows, rustling the long trailing leaves and stirring the calm surface of the pond into soft, silver ripples. Distant insects resumed their quiet chorus.
The earlier roar of the essence tornado felt only a memory now as the air itself felt lighter, washed clean by the massive gathering and release of power.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Sol stood casually, arms crossed, the chill in the air barely registering against his roaring internal heat. Veylara walked over, stopping barely a few inches away from him.
Up close, the sheer physical change in her was even more prominent. Her skin gave off a faint, sweet fragrance like sun-baked cedar and crushed mountain mint, mixed with the unmistakable, lingering musk of their joined sweat.
But behind that was the sheer, terrifying depth of her essence... an abyss so vast that even Sol’s sharp senses couldn’t gauge the bottom of it.
Veylara reached out.
Her fingers, strong and calloused from decades of gripping war spears, gently cupped the side of his jaw. Her touch was warm, surprisingly soft, and completely devoid of hesitation.
"You really didn’t know what would happen, did you?" she murmured, her deep blue eyes searching his neon-crimson gaze.
"Not a clue," Sol admitted bluntly, leaning slightly into her palm. "I thought you were just having a crazy cramp. I was five seconds away from tackling you into the mud to keep you from biting your own tongue off."
A faint smirk touched her lips, her thumb lightly tracing the edge of his cheekbone.
"My mother told me once that power in this world always demands blood," Veylara said, her voice dropping into a quiet, contemplative whisper. "She said that to climb the layers, a warrior must hollow themselves out, must abandon every scrap of warmth until only the weapon remains."
A faint, almost bitter curve touched her mouth. "I lived thirty winters believing that lie. I thought that due to my overwhelming talent, despite the restrictions of this land, I could still do the unthinkable. And when I failed... when the fifth layer stayed forever out of reach... I told myself it was because I wasn’t ruthless enough. Because I spared too many. Because I still carried too much care for my people."
Her thumb slid down to the hollow of his throat, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his pulse.
"I never imagined that the key to breaking the heavens wasn’t isolation or slaughter..."
She lifted her eyes to his, deep blue meeting neon-crimson in the fading moonlight.
"...but total, shameless surrender."
"Don’t get poetic on me, Chief," Sol spoke, his hand coming up to rest naturally over the warm curve of her hip, his fingers tightening against the crimson linen. "It was just a good fuck."
Veylara let out a low, dangerous hum in her chest, as Sol stepped in until the soft, firm breasts were pressed lightly against his chest.
"A ’good fuck’ that tore an entire realm’s laws in half," she corrected smoothly, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of sovereign pride and wicked amusement.
Slowly she felt his hands begin to wander, sliding lower, growing bolder and molding the soft curves of her ass. A faint cough escaped her...half warning, half the first crack in her control... as she fought the sudden, familiar hunger that threatened to rise again... but she did not pull away.
"Do not think this changes the relationship dynamics." she continued, her words straying as his fingers sank deeper into her flesh. "I-i know all about Kira and Zeyra, so in the morning light, I am still the Warchief of the Veynar.
I still command the spears, I still hold the council, and you are free to do whatever you want with them."
"Fine by me," Sol said with a low chuckle, his crimson eyes gleaming right back at her with unyielding intensity. "You can command the spears, Chief. You can sit on the high seat and bark at the elders all day long."
He leaned down, his lips brushing right against the shell of her ear, his breath hot and possessive, while his hands molded her ass, pulling her more firmly against him so there could be no mistaking the hard evidence of his interest.
"Just remember where you’ll be sitting and answering to when the night falls."
