Chapter 674: Core Expending

  • Next Chapter

Sol didn’t take his eyes off her for a fraction of a second. "What does that mean for her?" He asked knowingly.

"It means her body is trying to swallow an ocean through a path made for stream," Zephyra spat, wiping a smear of dark blood from her chin with a trembling forearm. "A warrior’s vessels at Layer 4 are forged to hold a certain amount of essence.

To reach Layer 5, the core must expand. If her core cannot endure the pressure of the expansion, or if her spirit beast cannot evolve to anchor the new density... her core will implode from the inside out under its own mass."

Sol’s jaw tightened until his molars ground together, his neon-crimson eyes scanning every twitch of Veylara’s rigid silhouette.

In the center of the clearing, Veylara’s entire body began to shudder.

A pale, silver-red vapor started seeping from her pores, rising into the cool night air like steam off a red-hot iron drawn from the forge.

It wasn’t sweat. It was the volatile overflow of raw essence being forcefully shoved into pathways that were still too narrow to accommodate the sheer volume.

Her spine bowed backward in a terrifying, unnatural arc. Her heels lifted completely off the ground again, hovering four inches above the mud as the gravitational distortion around her intensified.

The air within arm’s reach of her skin began to hum with a heavy, localized drag that pulled loose leaves, splinters of broken willow branches, and specks of dirt into a slow, circular orbit around her suspended body.

Inside her core, the battle was reaching a fever pitch.

Veylara could feel every single grain of her foundation screaming.

The foreign, potent catalyst Sol had flooded into her womb... that dense, untamable origin vitality that had ignited this entire madness... was acting like an unquenchable furnace.

It was relentlessly hammering against the stubborn, calcified boundaries of her Fourth Layer channels, melting away the ancient bottlenecks that had trapped every warlord in the north.

Wider, the power demanded. Denser.

Every pulse felt like molten bronze being poured directly into her veins. Her muscles locked into iron bands, agonizing cramps tearing through her thighs and abdomen as her physical body fought against the unnatural expansion.

The spirit beast dwelling within her core... the White Tiger, the proud beast had carried her through dozens of tribal wars... was roaring in raw, maddening torment.

Its spiritual phantom, usually a sleek, terrifying predator made of condensed golden light, was thrashing violently against the boundaries of her core.

Its form was cracking, the old Layer 4 beast-shell buckling under the tidal wave of essence rushing through the newly opened gates.

It needed more. It needed to break out of its old skin, or it would suffocate within its own master’s chest.

...

The clearing burned with a dry, blinding heat that turned the damp moss around the pond to smoking ash within seconds.

Sol stepped back two paces, lifting a forearm to shield his eyes as the raw, unfiltered deluge of essence funneled straight into Veylara’s chest.

The air was buzzing, humming with that sharp metallic tang that came when too much power crammed itself into a space too small to hold it. It smelled of ozone, scorched cedar, and the deep copper tang of her vaporized blood.

Beside him, He helped Zephyra against a cracked stone slab, leaning heavily on one arm. Her ceremonial robes were torn, stained with black mud and drops of her own spit, but she barely seemed to notice.

Her milky eyes were locked onto the floating silhouette, tracking the terrifying shifts happening within Veylara’s chest cavity.

"She’s devouring the remnant weave," Zephyra whispered, her voice still trembling with residual shock, her breath hitching every time the air pressure jolted. "I don’t know if it was her fortune or misfortune, the sky had left behind shattered fragments of its own authority when it broke away. Look at the color. The red embers drifting into her skin... that is the marrow of the boundary itself!"

Sol squinted through the glare.

She was right. The white-pale torrent of ambient jungle essence wasn’t moving alone anymore.

Mingled inside the swirling vortex were thin, broken threads of crimson... the dying, scattered remnants of the heavenly restrictions that Orphos had shattered like cheap glass.

Normally, a mortal touching even a stray spark of that cosmic executioner’s will would have their soul sea boiled to sludge.

But right now, with the ancient barrier shattered and Veylara’s core acting like an insatiable sinkhole, those red threads were being dragged down, chewed up, and swallowed whole.

Thump.

A single heartbeat tore through the clearing.

It didn’t felt like the sound a flesh could create. It sounded like an iron drum struck inside an iron hall.

Sol felt the impact hit his ribs, jarring his balance even with his heels dug deep into the bedrock. The water remaining in the half-empty pond jumped six inches into the air, splashing outward in uniform, rippling rings.

Thump.

The second beat hit harder.

Veylara’s head jerked back, her long, black hair thrashing through the howling air like living wire. Her bare throat stretched taut, the cords of muscle standing out as her chest expanded to an impossible degree.

Deep beneath her ribs, the core was undergoing a violent, agonizing metamorphosis.

Sol’s spiritual senses, could feel the inner architecture of her body groaning under the strain.

Layers used to measure the strength weren’t just for name, they had true tangible form but until layer 4, they weren’t of much use, so warriors usually ignored them.

But at Layer 4, a warrior possessed four distinct essence layers.... that churned spirit into physical mass and lethal momentum.

Veylara had spent over a decade polishing those four layers until they were harder than diamond, until they had reached the absolute, immutable edge of what mortal flesh in the Great Orrath could sustain.

Now, those four layers were expanding to accommodate a fifth one.

The sheer volume of the incoming essence, supercharged by the primordial vitality Sol had pumped into her womb and the shattered fragments of the sky’s authority, was forcing her foundation into a crucible.
