Chapter 670: Felt Genuinely Happy

  • Next Chapter

Before the thought could take root, the sky detonated with silent, merciless fury.

The bruised, crimson-black rift overhead expanded further, yawning open like the maw of an ancient predator.

The majesty of the Heavenly Restrictions bore down in full force. It was not just a simple gust of gravity, but the absolute, crushing weight of heavenly rules. It was the collective will of the land, a rigid law, declaring that no mortal within these lands was permitted to stand above the Fourth Layer.

The pressure spiked to an astronomical degree.

The air seemed to vanish. Lungs almost collapsed. Every molecule of oxygen in the clearing was pulverized by an absolute, divine gravity that turned the atmosphere into solid lead.

The ground around the clearing groaned and sank two full feet in an instant, the remaining spring water blasted out of the pond like steam. As he exerted some pressure, Sol’s feet sank three inches into the shattering bedrock, the bones in his shins groaning under the heavy strain.

For a moment he couldn’t move his body, couldn’t even blink. His lungs also seized up entirely. The air in his throat turned hard as packed sand; he couldn’t drag in a single breath, his ribs creaking under an invisible vice.

Beside him, Zephyra was almost flattened against the ground, her breath forced out in a wet rasp, unable to even lift her chin and look up.

Yet, all of that was just the ambient spillover and the true focal point of that celestial wrath was not them.

It was Veylara.

Suspended at the dead center of the hollow, Veylara took ninety percent of the descending execution. The golden-white luster from before sputtered and warped. Her body seems to crack as fine cracks spread through the body with the dry sound of breaking glass.

Her vision swam in a sea of crimson. Blood poured freely from her nose, her ears, and the corners of her eyes, dripping down her chin and burning to ash before it could hit her breasts.

Slowly her vision blurred, darkening at the edges until the entire clearing began to fade into a cold, hollow fog.

In that suffocating dark, her mind began to detach from her flesh.

Is this the end of the climb?

The thought crept into her mind, heavy with the bitter chill of despair.

Fragments of her past flickered across her fading consciousness like sparks in a hearth.

She saw herself as a bruised girl of seven winters, clutching a wooden spear too heavy for her hands, in the snow as her mother left the world while her father sneered at her tears.

She saw the bloody succession where she had butchered her own kin to claim the Warchief’s mantle and to keep the Veynar from falling to pieces.

She saw moons of starving winters, the bitter taste of wild weeds and herbs, the constant, suffocating anxiety for the survival of her tribe.

She remembered thirty long, freezing winters spent carrying the survival of hundreds on her shoulders, never sleeping with both eyes closed, never leaning on a single soul, denying herself every scrap of warmth love, rest, and peace, turning herself into an unyielding spear just so her people could draw breath without looking at the jungle in terror.

And now, after finally shattering the Coalition, when she had finally broken the chains.... when she had finally reached the peak no one in the history of the northern basin had ever dared dream of ... the world itself was stepping down to crush her like a bug.

A bitter, profound despair clawed at her heart. She was so close. The fifth Layer was right there. To be erased not by an honorable blade on the battlefield, but by an indifferent, faceless decree of the sky felt like a sick, twisted joke.

The unfairness of it tore at her soul. Her spirit began to slip. The pain was too vast; her bones were turning to splinters, her channels tearing open.

Her mind grew numb, the crushing weight whispering that fighting the heavens was madness, that yielding to the ground was the only natural end for a mortal who reached too far. She felt the urge to let go, to close her eyes and let the blackness swallow her whole.

Just let go, the darkness murmured.

Her eyes flickered, the golden fire dimming. But as her chin sank toward her chest, her fading gaze caught the trembling, blood-painted silhouette standing at the edge of the pond.

Sol.

He was locked in the dirt, muscles straining until veins stood out like black phythons, teeth bared, glaring up at the sky with that raw, insolent fury that never bowed to anything.

A strange, unexpected warmth bloomed in Veylara’s chest, cutting clean through the agony and the icy despair in her chest.

She remembered the sheer, reckless audacity of a man who broke every rule, who slaughtered warlords with an offhand shrug, and who had stood against the coalition for them.

She remembered his hands on her skin under the willows... rough, heavy, and undeniably possessive.

The memory burned through the freezing numbness of her failing body with startling, vivid heat.

It had only been moments ago, yet it felt carved into the very marrow of her bones.

She remembered the bruising grip of his fingers on her hips, anchoring her down, making it clear she had nowhere to run.

She remembered his raw power, the terrifying, unyielding stamina that had matched and then overwhelmed her own Layer 4 body, driving into her until her proud, untouched fortress simply fell to pieces.

Yet underneath all that rough, unapologetic hunger, she remembered his unexpected gentleness.

The way his lips had brushed the curve of her jaw when she was trembling.

The low, gravelly rasp of his voice coaxing her through the unfamiliar, terrifying sensations, guiding her by inches until her defenses unraveled.

For the first time in thirty hard, blood-soaked winters, Veylara had felt genuinely happy. Truly relaxed.

It was the very first time she had ever allowed a man to come that close... not just to her flesh, but to the woman beneath the armor.
