In the Shaven Empire, Royal Capital Telon, Sin Duke’s Manor study
As a cloud of sorrow perfectly masked the sunlight, a man seemed to awaken from the darkness and slowly opened his eyes. At this moment, he was sitting behind the central long table in the study, maintaining a lazy posture leaning against the chair’s backrest as if feigning sleep when last disconnected, quietly ensconced in the shadows where light from any angle unconsciously avoided, not daring to venture a half-step into the minefield.
The effect of [Sealing Sin] was stable as always, and he didn’t even need to consciously suppress that innate power within seeking to devour outside things, as usual, imprisoning that nauseating strength deep within his soul, if he still had what could be called a soul to suppress.
The noise from the outside world grew more chaotic and annoying, yet he was helpless, those self-righteous preparations and plans surged under the current, unaware that his eyes had already touched their corners, as if watching a seemingly fervent, yet clumsily dull circus from an empty stage.
Outsiders, Onmyoji, Medium... these entities that always lurked beneath the surface finally appeared before ’him’, standing armed like little clowns in salute for review.
They were the greatest threat, yet also the most trivial threat; this world had no place for them, neither past, present, nor future, always remaining forbidden realms those order defenders couldn’t tread.
They were powerful, so powerful that perhaps just a glance, a finger snap, could turn him to dust, returning this nauseating world to peace. Unfortunately, stopping them was precisely that unmatched power.
Mo stood up, walked slowly to the bookshelf, and drew out a book titled "Edon’s Hymn", one of the books Ji Xiaodao used for leisure while staying in the study, a story that felt tedious.
In the story, Adon is a dull genius. Called a genius because this boy from a small village managed, with no guidance and resources, to break through from a common person to the peak of legendary within just ten years. Of course, people knew such feats were merely set by the author; if they wished, easily reducing ten years to ten minutes could be done for the story creator.
And Adon was called dull because his desire to become stronger actually stemmed from a story he heard in childhood, an exceptionally cliché story.
In the story, there was a beautiful princess.
In the story, there was an evil demon king.
Like countless cliché tales, the demon king snatched the princess, the princess longed for the hero, and the hero embarked on a journey.
Like countless cliché tales, the hero was destined to be stronger than the demon king; all dangers and setbacks were merely predetermined steps of trivial processes, sounding grand but easily guessed at the ending by anyone slightly perceptive after knowing the beginning.
But Adon in the first story, just a village boy, wasn’t particularly perceptive, so he didn’t guess the outcome.
And the bard who stayed in Adon’s village intended to tell stories to the children for three days.
On the first day, he would outline the story’s background, introduce the main characters, tell everyone about the beautiful princess, the evil demon king, and the virtuous hero.
On the second day, he would describe the hero’s journey, deliberately creating obstacles for him, granting the hero some ’great wisdom’ that any common person could think of, and bestow him with noble qualities hard to find in reality to help him overcome.[cut]
And on the planned third day, he would tell the children that the righteous, kindhearted warrior defeated the evil, powerful demon king, saved the gentle and beautiful princess, and the two led a blissful life thereafter.
Unfortunately, in the first story, the bard’s purse was stolen by greedy villagers on the second night, and due to mutual concealment by those despicable adults, the bard never got justice in the end.
Helplessly, he packed his remaining belongings, preparing to leave the greedy village for the next town to seek a living.
At this moment, Adon ran up to the bard, asking for the story’s continuation; evidently, he was not a fan of unfinished tales.
But the bard was no longer in the mood to tell stories; to fill his stomach, he had to walk a whole half day to reach the next town, and he was in such a foul mood at the time that he said this to Adon—
’The hero, having endured hardships reaching the demon king’s castle, was defeated. His heart was pierced by the demon king, his head was chopped off by the demon king, his torso was nailed to the castle gate to dry, his eyes stored in a box as a keepsake, and the princess found no redemption; she didn’t even know of the hero’s existence.’
Evidently, this erroneous ending was the bard’s revenge, even though the kind-hearted Adon hadn’t participated in the robbery against him. But since the bard couldn’t contend with those burly villagers, he could only vent his anger at the child before him.
