Chapter 1407: 1406 If you like the beach

Chapter 1407: 1406 If you like the beach

Countryside

Wen Jin and Jing Xiaocha arrived at the small town Lu Zhiyan mentioned. They had just left the home of a military family in town, taken gifts from the car, and were preparing to head to the next house.

“Zhiyan, Miss Fang.”

Wen Jin and Jing Xiaocha called out to them and quickly stepped forward.

Lu Zhiyan exchanged a glance with Wen Jin, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “As expected, you brought your little shadow.”

“What little shadow? Officer Lu, I am not a little shadow.” Jing Xiaocha protested in frustration—she was under Sister Wen’s orders to accompany Brother Wen for the Spring Festival.

“If you’re not a little shadow, what are you? Many years ago, Ranran was just like this, following Ah Jin everywhere. If you don’t want to be Ah Jin’s little shadow, then stick with Fang Zhiwei today.”

“Sister Fang, my name is Jing Xiaocha.”

Jing Xiaocha darted over to Fang Zhiwei, naturally grabbing her hand and smiling brightly as she introduced herself.

Fang Zhiwei smiled warmly, “Hello.”

“Sister Fang, let me help you carry that. You can rest for a bit.”

Jing Xiaocha’s enthusiasm left Fang Zhiwei unable to refuse. Jing Xiaocha took the gifts from Fang Zhiwei’s hands, glanced back at Wen Jin and Lu Zhiyan, and asked, “Officer Lu, where are we heading now?”

“Just up ahead to the third house.”

Lu Zhiyan raised his hand and pointed toward their destination. “There’s only an elderly lady over eighty years old living there. This task is yours. You both handle it, while Ah Jin and I’ll follow from behind.”

“No problem.”

Jing Xiaocha agreed readily, then pulled Fang Zhiwei along, skillfully striking up a conversation as they walked ahead.

Lu Zhiyan and Wen Jin deliberately slowed their pace, trailing several meters behind the two women. “Ah Jin, are you really planning to let Jing Xiaocha tag along for the Spring Festival?”

“Ranran called me earlier and said that Jing Xiaocha is pity-worthy, asking me to take her in.”

“Pity-worthy?”

Lu Zhiyan raised an eyebrow, smiling. Jing Xiaocha, while having a somewhat unfortunate background, was incredibly optimistic, practically indestructible—a cheerful glow perpetually lit up her delicate face, showing no signs of pity.

“A few days ago, Zhang Minghui’s aunt brought him to hassle Jing Xiaocha. Fortunately, I happened to run into them…”

Wen Jin briefly described the situation. After hearing the explanation, anger flickered across Lu Zhiyan’s handsome face. “That Zhang Minghui—so young and yet so malicious. He’s been corrupted by his parents, and now, following his aunt, he’s still mingling with a bad influence and learning nothing good.”

“This kind of behavior will be dangerous if it continues.”

Recalling the situation from that day, Wen Jin couldn’t help but furrow his brows.

“So, are you planning to take Jing Xiaocha in and let her stay at your place?” Lu Zhiyan’s gaze burned into Wen Jin, a playful smile forming. “A single man and a single woman—did Ranran indirectly set you up with her, or do you already have feelings for that little girl?”

“Stop talking nonsense.” Wen Jin’s handsome face darkened.

“What nonsense? Ranran is constantly worrying about her brother’s happiness. Until you get married, she’ll remain uneasy. But with Jing Xiaocha’s background, she’s not suitable for you. I doubt that was Ranran’s intention.”

Lu Zhiyan’s remarks made Wen Jin frown in displeasure. He glared at Lu Zhiyan and remembered Ranran’s words over the phone: “Brother, Jing Xiaocha seems quite pitiful. I really like her. Just take her in and let her spend the holiday with you. This way, you won’t be all alone this Spring Festival in G City…”

“How did you convince Fang Zhiwei to come out?”

After a moment’s silence, Wen Jin shifted the subject.

At this, Lu Zhiyan smugly raised an elegant brow. “The wise have their methods. From my observations over the past two hours, even if Fang Zhiwei does have depression, it’s only mild.”

“You seem to be getting along quite well.”

Wen Jin’s gaze shifted forward. Jing Xiaocha, one hand carrying the gifts and the other arm linked with Fang Zhiwei’s, tilted her face slightly as she chatted with Fang Zhiwei about something.

“Ranran!”

Some city, seaside villa.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window and gazing at the sea, Wen Ran was embraced from behind by Mo Xiuchen. Her slender frame nestled into his firm, warm chest as she tilted her face up, her eyes meeting his deep ones that gleamed with tender amusement.

“Has Ziyi fallen asleep?”

“Mm, he’s asleep. I told you I’d have him drift off in ten minutes, and there’s still a minute to spare.”

Mo Xiuchen chuckled softly, lowered his head, and dropped a kiss on her neck. The heat of his breath caused the delicate figure in his arms to shiver. “How did you put Ziyi to bed? Just moments ago, he was energetic, insisting on going to play at the beach.”

Wen Ran tried to divert his attention.

At his touch, tingling sensations transformed into waves of heat coursing through her body. Her pale cheeks turned slightly pink, mirroring the sunset glow outside.

Mo Xiuchen’s thin lips left her neck, the heat of his voice resonating alluringly in her ear. “I told him to hurry up and sleep—didn’t want him taking up my time with my wife.”

“Ziyi’s still so young; don’t spout nonsense to him.”

Wen Ran cast him a reproachful glance, laughing as she pushed him away.

Mo Xiuchen pulled her onto the nearby leather couch, effortlessly encircling her within his arms. “I’m not spouting nonsense. It’s true—I can’t let him take time away from my wife.”

In fact, he hadn’t waited for Ziyi to fall asleep, instead leaving the nanny in charge so he could come find Wen Ran.

“I called my brother earlier.”

Wen Ran struggled briefly but gave up, her body resting against his chest.

“Ah Jin or Ah Kai?”

“The two of them are together. This morning, my brother took Jing Xiaocha to the countryside, joining Brother Lu for distributing welfare to retired citizens. In the afternoon, they picked up Brother Lu’s cousin. When I called, it seemed Brother Lu’s cousin had just finished her check-up.”

“Lu Zhiyan isn’t entirely foolish. He didn’t directly approach Fang Zhiwei but took her along for therapy on her depression.” Mo Xiuchen chuckled as his large hand slipped beneath Wen Ran’s shirt, moving skillfully to her back. A light stroke of his fingertips promptly evoked a startled sound from her.

“Ah, Xiuchen!”

“Ranran, we’re here to vacation. You shouldn’t be worrying about Ah Jin and Ah Kai. They’re not kids. If they need your help even to date, then they might as well give up on romance.”

Mo Xiuchen’s grip tightened around her waist, pulling her body flush against his. He lowered his head, his lips lightly pressing against her through the thin fabric of her clothes, igniting her sensitive spots…

Nestled against him, Wen Ran’s body trembled once more. Mo Xiuchen let out a low chuckle. “Ranran, would you prefer the bed or here?”

“Neither—I want to go play on the beach.”

Wen Ran’s voice quivered as she spoke. She was acutely aware of Mo Xiuchen’s physical changes, and his lips and hands seemed to stoke flames wherever they landed.

“It’s not fully dark yet, so let’s not go to the beach. I’d rather not let others see my Ranran. If you’re set on the beach, we’ll wait until it’s late, and I’ll bring you there.”
