Even if she doesn’t go back, she will always be Tongtong’s mother—the woman who carried her for ten months and painstakingly gave birth to her.
It’s not as if Gu Kai can just replace Tongtong’s mom by saying so.
After Bai Yiyi finished yelling, she raised her hand to harshly wipe away her tears, lifting her stubborn chin. “Fine, I’ll go back. Gu Kai, do you think I’m scared of you?”
Let him hate if he wants to hate.
After all, it’s over between them. From now on, apart from Tongtong, there will be no other connection between them.
Bai Yiyi quickly packed her clothes into the suitcase, checked out of the room, and managed to catch the last bus.

These past days with Tongtong around, the Gu Family’s breakfast table had been filled with newfound joy.
Gu Yan gazed at the quiet and focused Tongtong eating her breakfast, his eyes brimming with a doting smile. “Ah Kai, wipe Tongtong’s mouth.”
Just as Gu Kai reached out, Tongtong lifted her small face. “Tongtong can do it herself.”
“Haha, I forgot, Tongtong is such a capable little darling.” Amid Gu Kai’s cheerful laughter, Tongtong picked up the napkin and elegantly wiped her little mouth.
“In this, Tongtong definitely takes after you.”
Gu Yan watched Tongtong’s gesture of wiping her mouth, his brows carrying a warmth brimming with delight.
Tongtong resembled Gu Kai in many ways. “Dad, Tongtong is my daughter. Isn’t it natural for her to inherit my strengths?”
Gu Kai raised his brows proudly. Except for her face—which resembled Bai Yiyi a little more—everything else about Tongtong was just like Gu Kai.
When Gu Kai and Bai Yiyi had meals together, he’d never observed Bai Yiyi clean her mouth with such elegance and grace as Tongtong did.
Thinking of that woman again, he subconsciously furrowed his brows, his eyes lowering to conceal his emotions.
“Ah Kai, have you been in any contact with Bai Yiyi lately?”
Gu Yan hadn’t asked until now, but it didn’t mean he was unaware. He simply assumed Ah Kai could sort out his own feelings. But hearing Tongtong say every day how much she missed her mom, Gu Yan couldn’t help but think of how Ranran left them when she was little.
He didn’t want Tongtong to grow up with regrets in her childhood, like Ranran did.
Ranran was fortunate; she later met Wen Hongrui, and having her memory erased, she enjoyed more than a decade of happiness.
Tongtong, however, was different. They couldn’t make her forget about her mother.
Gu Kai’s expression slightly changed, and his hardened tone betrayed his inner unrest. “Her phone has been off. I can’t reach her.”
“Ah Kai, I already know about your previous relationship with Bai Yiyi.”
“Dad.” Gu Kai called out, his voice restrained.
Gu Yan’s expression remained gentle. “Ah Kai, when your mother passed away, she told me to let you decide your own marriage in the future. So all these years, I haven’t pressured you to marry any specific girl. Even when you went on blind dates, had a relationship with Fang Zhiwei, and broke up, I let you follow your heart.”
Mentioning his late mother, Gu Kai suddenly fell silent.
“I promised your mother that your marriage would be your decision. No matter what kind of girl you like, no matter her background or family status, as long as you both love each other, I wouldn’t object.”
Gu Yan spoke with the understanding of a father who only wanted his son’s happiness, his voice gentle. “If you still like Bai Yiyi, don’t worry about her parents. I’ve already talked to Ranran, and she’s told me everything. Now, Dad just wants to know—do you still like Bai Yiyi?”
Gu Kai’s face went through a series of changes.
His thin lips pressed together lightly, and doubt flickered in his Mo Yu-like eyes.
“Grandpa.”
Tongtong’s clear voice rang out.
Gu Yan smiled and turned his gaze to Tongtong. “Tongtong, what’s the matter?”
“Daddy likes Mommy.” Tongtong beamed, taking it upon herself to speak for her dad.
Gu Kai stared at her in astonishment. He heard her giggle twice and say, “Tongtong also likes Mommy.”
“Alright, Grandpa understands.” Gu Yan chuckled and patted Tongtong’s head. She lowered her head again, holding her milk cup in her little hands as she drank.
“Ah Kai, you should learn a thing or two from Tongtong. If you like Bai Yiyi, let go of your hatred. If your mom were still alive, she’d definitely want you to be happy. Not just her—both Ranran and I want you to live a happy life as well.”
Having said that, Gu Yan turned to Tongtong in a soft tone. “Tongtong, Grandpa is going to the hospital now. In a while, you’ll go to Auntie’s house and study well, alright?”
“Alright.”
Tongtong replied cheerfully.
Gu Yan stood up, and before leaving, Tongtong waved at him, calling out, “Grandpa, goodbye.”
“Goodbye, Tongtong.” After Gu Yan left, Gu Kai sat there absentmindedly, lost in thought.
After finishing her milk, Tongtong called out to him twice before he snapped out of it.
“Tongtong, Daddy will take you to Auntie’s house.”
Right as he finished speaking, his phone suddenly rang. Gu Kai pulled out his phone and answered, “Hello, Dad.”
“Ah Kai, Yiyi has returned. I told her to come find you and Tongtong. Have a good talk with her.”
Gu Yan’s voice came through clearly over the line, so much so that Gu Kai could hear his own heartbeat pause for a moment. His grip on his phone tightened as he fell silent briefly before replying, “Okay.”
“Don’t start any arguments. Even though Tongtong is little, she already understands a lot.”
Gu Yan reminded him, concerned.
Gu Kai gave another curt “Okay” in response. After Gu Yan hung up, he turned back and glanced toward Bai Yiyi, who had already entered the villa and was being led by the housekeeper toward the living room.
He hesitated for a moment before dialing Wen Ran’s number.
In the dining room, Gu Kai ended the call. Taking a deep breath to calm his emotions, he picked up a napkin again to gently wipe Tongtong’s little mouth before lifting her from her chair. Looking at her quietly, he said in a warm voice, “Tongtong, Daddy has good news to tell you.”
Tongtong blinked her bright, black eyes.
Gu Kai’s lips curved into a tender smile. “Mommy has come back. In a little while, when you’re hugging Mommy, make sure not to let her go, okay?”
“Hug Mommy.” Tongtong’s face lit up with pure joy.
Gu Kai nodded. “Mommy wants to go far, far away. Tongtong, didn’t you say you wanted both Mommy and Daddy to be with you?”
“I do.”
Her answer was instant and unwavering.
“Then remember what Daddy just told you. Later, when Mommy sees you, if she still wants to leave, hug her tight—don’t let her leave.”
“Alright.” Tongtong seemed to understand slightly but not completely. She didn’t know why Mommy wanted to leave, but she did know she didn’t want Mommy to go.
After giving his instructions, Gu Kai led Tongtong out of the dining room. At that moment, the housekeeper was bringing Bai Yiyi into the living room. From the entryway came the sound of footsteps and muffled voices.
“Mommy.”
At the sound of Bai Yiyi’s voice, Tongtong immediately cried out with joy, her little voice carrying excitement.
At the entryway, as Bai Yiyi bent down to change her shoes, her heart clenched. Her delicate body froze instantly at Tongtong’s cry of “Mommy.”
The next second, the sound of tiny footsteps echoed in her ears.
She pressed her lips together and turned her head. Seeing the small figure running toward her from the living room, her nose stung, and tears nearly fell from her eyes.
“Mommy, Mommy.”
Tongtong, like a happy little bird, flew right into her mommy’s arms, spreading her tiny arms wide and clutching Bai Yiyi tightly.
