Chapter 1358: 1357 Your happiness is more important than anything else
Gu Kai’s dark eyes flashed a hint of emotion, and after a moment, his voice rang out cold and hard: “There shouldn’t have been any connection between her and me to begin with.”
“Ah Kai, what exactly did Li En say to you?”
Mo Xiuchen’s face darkened, his half-narrowed eyes revealing a sharp glint.
Li En, that despicable man, had freed himself but refused to let Ah Kai and Bai Yiyi be together.
“Xiuchen, I don’t want to talk about those things anymore. Even if you hadn’t come, I was planning to return in a couple of days.”
“The weather forecast says cold air is coming in the next couple of days, with heavy snow in some cities. Perfect timing—I can stay here with you for two days. If you don’t feel like talking now, that’s fine. You can tell me everything gradually over the next day or two.”
After saying this, Mo Xiuchen tipped his head back and finished his drink, then stood up to ask, “Where am I staying tonight?”
“Do as you please.” Gu Kai responded listlessly, placing his glass on the coffee table, tilting his head, and letting his tall figure slump onto the couch.
Mo Xiuchen furrowed his brow but chose not to say anything. He left the master bedroom and went to the guest room to call Wen Ran. He wanted to tell her that he had already tracked down Gu Kai.
After lying on the couch for a few minutes, Gu Kai sat up, walked over to the bed, opened the drawer, and took out his phone, powering it on.
As soon as the phone booted up, it immediately emitted a cacophony of notification sounds.
In the past ten days, he hadn’t turned it on even once, isolating himself completely from the outside world. He stayed in this seaside villa, alone, spending his days sleeping, gazing at the sea, reading, and eating.
The person he thought about the most wasn’t Bai Yiyi, wasn’t Tongtong, wasn’t his father, and wasn’t Ranran…
But his late mother.
This seaside villa had been built by his father for his mother back in the day. Over the past few days, he kept thinking of her.
Every time she came to mind, he felt overwhelmed by his sense of filial failure.
His long fingers scrolled through the notifications—calls, messages.
Among the calls and messages, the person who tried to reach him the most was Ranran, his sister, to whom he felt he owed the most.
“Brother, I already know you’ve met Li En. I don’t know what he said to you, but when you see this message, could you call me back?”
“Brother, I’m really worried about you. Have you seen my messages?”
“Brother, Tongtong misses you. Momo, Xin Xin, and Ziyi miss you too. When will you come back?”
“Brother, your hand injury hasn’t healed yet. Even if you’re upset, don’t drink alcohol. Today I told Yiyi that you’ve met Li En. When you see this message, call her back, okay?”
…
Wen Ran sent one message every day.
She made one call every day too.
She genuinely didn’t want Gu Kai to let his relationship with Bai Yiyi end because of what happened years ago. If they weren’t in love, then fine, but it was clear they cared deeply for each other.
Especially considering there’s Tongtong.
For her brother’s happiness or for Tongtong’s upbringing, Wen Ran wished that Gu Kai could come to terms with things, let go of the past, and be with Bai Yiyi.
After reading Wen Ran’s messages, Gu Kai felt as though his chest was filled with a pile of heavy stones, leaving him unbearably afflicted.
He recalled Li En’s words from that day: “Did you think Bai Yuqin wasn’t involved? Did you think Bai Yiyi was innocent? Hah! Gu Kai, you idiot. Both mother and daughter were involved—in harming your sister…”
Pain flickered in Gu Kai’s eyes, and his grip on the phone tightened abruptly.
Taking a deep breath, he opened Bai Yiyi’s message:
“Gu Kai, I know you met Li En. Whatever he said to you must be related to Ranran’s incident all those years ago, which made you leave Tongtong and me and disappear.”
“You don’t need to struggle anymore. Just come back. Don’t make Ranran worry about you. Let’s go back to the way things were and be strangers to each other. I’ll pretend you never said anything.”
Just two sentences. Bai Yiyi’s tone was calm. There were no accusations, no anger—just a peaceful statement of their parting.
Gu Kai’s lips curled upward into a mocking smile, and his gaze turned icy.
It seems that Li En wasn’t fabricating things—it was true.
That’s why Bai Yiyi didn’t ask any questions but simply chose to break up.
Gu Kai pressed his lips together and deleted her message. The breakup was inevitable—if she hadn’t brought it up, he would have.
Previously, he could convince himself that Bai Yiyi and Fu Jingyi were nothing more than related by blood and had no other ties.
She had been raised by Bai Yuqin since childhood, and Bai Yuqin didn’t know about Fu Jingyi’s misdeeds…
But now, he had been told they weren’t innocent.
They were involved. They were involved.
Gu Kai felt he had been truly foolish to believe Bai Yuqin wasn’t connected. She loved Fu Jingyi so much—over twenty years, the two of them had always been in touch.
He had only been blindly trying to absolve them because he had fallen for Bai Yiyi.

In the guest room, Mo Xiuchen stood by the window, talking to Wen Ran on the phone.
“Xiuchen, can you let my brother take the call? I want to say a few words to him.” Wen Ran’s voice, light yet soft, floated through the night into his ears. As someone who had never refused her requests, Mo Xiuchen naturally agreed. “Sure, hang on. I’ll go find Ah Kai now.”
He grabbed his phone and strode out of the guest room.
When he pushed open the master bedroom door, he saw Gu Kai still slumped on the couch. However, now there was a phone in his hand.
He was staring blankly, not even noticing Mo Xiuchen’s entry.
Mo Xiuchen cleared his throat and walked over to the couch with long strides, handing him the phone. “Ranran wants to talk to you.”
Gu Kai snapped out of his daze, stared at the phone in his hand for a moment, then took the call, silently calming himself before speaking softly: “Hello?”
“Brother, it’s me.”
Wen Ran’s voice came through the phone, gentle as always.
The lingering emotion in Gu Kai’s eyes dissipated; a hint of warmth surfaced in his dark gaze, and his lips curved faintly upward. “Ranran, I’m fine. You don’t have to worry.”
“Brother, you’ve worried me sick. You’ve been gone for so many days—how could you possibly be fine?”
Wen Ran clearly didn’t believe him.
“I really am fine. If you don’t believe me, ask Mo Xiuchen. Your brother is way more handsome than him.” Gu Kai’s lips lifted into a grin, his voice tinged with humor.
“You must have grown a full beard by now.”
“No way. I’ll take a selfie and send it to you later to prove I’m even more handsome than Mo Xiuchen. Ranran, I’ll head back in a couple of days.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.
Mo Xiuchen, standing off to the side, watched Gu Kai’s softened demeanor as he spoke with Ranran. The warmth in his brow made Mo Xiuchen’s heart feel lighter as well.
Gu Kai was a great brother. Over all these years, the two of them had been each other’s support—one searching for his sister, the other searching for his beloved.
Mo Xiuchen understood Gu Kai’s feelings deeply, and he could guess that whatever Li En had said to Gu Kai likely involved Bai Yuqin, Bai Yiyi, and Wen Ran.
A few seconds later, Wen Ran’s voice came through the phone again. Her gentle words stirred Gu Kai’s heart and warmed him. “Brother, to me, your happiness means more than anything else.”
