First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 3115 - Life and Death Battles, No More Than Childish Games

  • Next Chapter

Heaven and earth were deathly silent after the Monarch of Endless Tribulations’ last remnants vanished into the darkness of the Daoless Domain.

Hong Ling felt calm, or rather, too overcome with disbelief to feel emotional. The Monarch of Endless Tribulations was, after all, an existence who’d broken the shackles of destiny and stepped onto the Far Shore, as well as the legendary ruler of the Realm of Endless Tribulations.

Who could have imagined that the Threelives Buddha would successfully trick him at every turn, leading to his ultimate demise?

Hong Ling couldn’t help but take another look at the Threelives Buddha. The monk’s schemes are completely unfathomable. Was he plotting against the Monarch of Endless Tribulations right from the start, before we even arrived? If so... he’s far too terrifying!

“You lost to yourself, huh? You sure know how to put on airs, Monarch of Endless Tribulations.” The Threelives Buddha shook his head.

Su Yi still stood in the distance, hovering amidst the ancient darkness. “In his shoes, I wouldn’t have admitted that I’d lost to you, either.”

His light of the Grand Dao flowed around him, gradually withdrawing into his body. That dazzling gleam was gone, but he still stood there, unaffected by the darkness or the environment of the Daoless Domain.

Not long after he spoke, Su Yi approached, walking through the blackness.

Hong Ling and the Threelives Buddha’s expression became solemn, not because Su Yi’s presence was overwhelming, but rather because they sensed no trace of the Grand Dao on his person.

It was as if he’d been reduced to an ordinary mortal!

“He’s pulled the Grand Dao into himself. Nothing leaks, and he has no overt presence, yet he’s one with heaven and earth. I’ve never heard of any such Heavenly Fate Realm, let alone seen it,” the Threelives Buddha said with a sigh.

Earlier, when Su Yi broke through, all manner of memories flooded the Threelives Buddha’s mind, flashing by like flowers viewed from the back of a galloping horse.

There was no getting around it: this really was an unprecedented miracle.

Hong Ling was solemn. Prior to his breakthrough, Su Yi’s strength had already been incomparably heaven-defying. What about now? How strong had he become?

“How does my path of cultivation compare to yours?” Su Yi took out a jug of wine and had a sip. His bearing was leisurely, and his movements revealed no vestiges of the Grand Dao. He really seemed like an ordinary mortal.

Had anyone else been here to see this, they’d have undoubtedly believed that the Daoless Domain had erased his cultivation base, reducing him to a helpless cripple.

But the Threelives Buddha and Hong Ling knew that although the Daoless Domain could easily erase the cultivation of even Heavenly Sovereigns, it was useless against Su Yi!

“How do our paths of the Grand Dao compare? It’s hard to say,” the Threelives Buddha pondered out loud. “After all, we seek different Daos, and yours is unprecedented, while I walk a path unique among Buddhists, a path entirely my own.”

He shook his head. “It’s hard to say.”

Su Yi said casually, “How about we fight to test our strength?”

The Threelives Buddha shook his head. “You broke through, while I’ve fused with my master’s foundations in the Grand Dao. I’ve yet to break through, but I now possess the power to become a Dao Ancestor. Besides, you saw what happened to the Monarch of Endless Tribulations earlier, too. There’s no way I’d compete with you under these circumstances.”

Su Yi gazed intently at him. “Those powers aren’t yours. Even if you fuse them into your cultivation base, they still won’t be truly yours.”

The Threelives Buddha smiled. “I don’t understand your Dao, so I cannot comment. You don’t understand my Dao, so I urge you not to make idle comments either. If you do... Well, take care not to make a fool out of yourself.”

Su Yi said, “I’ll prove it to you.”

The Threelives Buddha’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

He got the vague sense that he’d missed some piece of critical information. He racked his brains, but nothing came to him.

Even so, he was instantly far more guarded and alert.

Su Yi took out a jug of wine and swept his gaze over the area. “There’s nowhere left for you to run. If you want to keep chatting, very well. I’ll accompany you to the very end.”

It was a seemingly casual remark, but the Threelives Buddha realized something, and he couldn’t help but laugh. “The Monarch of Endless Tribulations might be dead, but that doesn’t mean you can control the natural order of the Realm of Endless Tribulations.”

Hong Ling couldn’t help but sneer, her lips curling into a cold smile. The Monarch of Endless Tribulations assumed control of this place because he sought a Grand Dao of calamities and tribulations.

Su Yi only just broke into the Heavenly Fate Realm. Even with the Book of Destiny, how could he possibly control the natural order of the source of all calamities?

But against all expectations, Su Yi just said, “Ah, but I can.”

He waved his hand through the air, and countless Laws of Calamity surged forth, condensing into a boundless ocean of tribulations. Most wondrous of all, many of these Laws of Calamity condensed into sword qi, swimming through the sky like a school of fish.

This casual gesture made his opponents’ smiles freeze in place.

“Is it because of the Book of Destiny?” asked the Threelives Buddha. He was still calm. After all, the Monarch of Endless Tribulations had controlled the Laws of this place too, but he’d nonetheless been suppressed in the end.

Su Yi said casually, “Swear on your Buddhist Heart that you’ll tell the truth, then tell me your other two bodies’ whereabouts. If you do, I wouldn’t mind sharing these secrets with you.”

The Threelives Buddha’s eyes narrowed. He now dared say with certainty that Su Yi had known right from the start that this was but one of his three true bodies!

After a brief, considered pause, the Threelives Buddha turned to look at Hong Ling. “Fellow Daoist Hong Ling, Fellow Daoist Su’s conduct is as straightforward as his Dao. He disdains resorting to lies and alarmism. Seems to me that if we want to leave, we’ll have to end things with him once and for all!”

Hong Ling said calmly, “I’ll do my best to coordinate with you, Fellow Daoist.”

“Then I’ll just have to ask you to test Fellow Daoist Su and see how strong he’s become after his breakthrough. I’ll support you from the sidelines!” said the Threelives Buddha.

“???” Hong Ling’s eyes widened.

Su Yi couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s amazing how you manage to say such despicable things with such an air of righteousness.”

Hong Ling’s expression shifted erratically, but in the end, much to Su Yi’s surprise, she simply agreed without argument.

The Threelives Buddha was a bit stunned, too. He’d been prepared to convince her. He would never have guessed that she’d agree without any kind of argument.

Hong Ling explained her decision unprompted. “I just know that if Fellow Daoist Su is as honest as you say, neither of us will be able to leave until he’s dead. I’m willing to work with you, Threelives Buddha. I just hope you won’t give Fellow Daoist Su any further reasons to look down on you. If you do, I’ll turn my nose up at you, too.”

The Threelives Buddha said calmly, “Please rest assured, Fellow Daoist.”

Boom!

Hong Ling took out the Mirror of Mysteries and attacked directly, the power of a Heavenly Sovereign instantly spreading around her.

She’d worked with the Threelives Buddha to kill the Monarch of Endless Tribulations’ last remnant. Naturally, she was no ordinary Heavenly Sovereign.

When she attacked, countless dazzling arcs of divine radiance shot out of the Mirror of Mysteries like churning starlight surging through the sky.

The Threelives Buddha could tell that Hong Ling wasn’t holding back in the slightest.

Meanwhile, Su Yi attacked, too. He raised his hand and tapped the air.

Boom!

Laws of Calamity came crashing down, like a fierce downpour of sword qi.

The Threelives Buddha bellowed, took out his black alms bowl, and manifested all-encompassing, taboo Buddhist light to block the onslaught.

Hong Ling unleashed countless arcs of divine radiance, forcing Su Yi back and leaving the sky riddled with countless holes.

Su Yi stood there, unmoving, as if intimidated. He didn’t even fight back, let alone dodge. All was still save for the Book of Destiny silently floating into the air.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A series of deafening impacts rang out, one after another. Countless arcs of light exploded in front of Su Yi, erupting into stinging divine radiance.

But in the end, all of them collapsed before Su Yi, unable to shake him in the slightest.

Even now, there was no trace of the Grand Dao on his tall, upright figure. He was like a mortal of the world of red dust!

The Threelives Buddha’s eyes narrowed.

Hong Ling couldn’t help but gasp in disbelief. She’d attacked with all her might. Even other Heavenly Sovereigns would have had to dodge. Who could have anticipated that her attacks wouldn’t even budge Su Yi?

“If you use your own powers of the Grand Dao to fight me, I guarantee I won’t use my treasures to bully you,” Su Yi said casually.

He stood there, still holding a jug of wine, looking incomparably leisurely and at ease.

“Are you saying the Book of Destiny helped you block that attack, too?” the Threelives Buddha said gravely.

Su Yi ignored him and looked at Hong Ling.

She frowned. “This is a battle to the death, not some childish game.”

Before her voice had even finished echoing through the air, she attacked once more, unleashing a supreme divine ability through the Mirror of Mysteries.

Heaven and earth shook, and flaming starlight swept forth.

The Threelives Buddha held his black alms bowl aloft, obscuring the Laws of Calamity overhead as he watched Su Yi intently.

He was in no rush to attack for the simple reason that there was far too much about Su Yi he still didn’t understand. That was also why he’d insisted that Hong Ling test Su Yi first.

So long as she forced Su Yi to reveal his true strength, the Threelives Buddha had means of slipping in to deal a lethal blow!

It was then that Su Yi finally took action. His blue robes billowed around him as he pressed his fingers into a sword and slashed the air.

A streak of sword qi whooshed forth. It was as simple as could be, with no force or momentum to speak of. It seemed airy and ethereal, like it wouldn’t be able to withstand even a single blow.

Yet the Threelives Buddha’s expression shifted when he saw it.

That sword qi wasn’t lacking in force or momentum. Rather, its force was completely self-contained, withdrawn to the extreme. None of it leaked into the outside world.

It was every bit as plain and unassuming as Su Yi and his powers of the Grand Dao!

The Threelives Buddha couldn’t tell just how much sword force that sword qi contained, but he’d honed his instincts over the course of countless years of battle. Now, they practically screamed, “That strike is dangerous!”

This thought had only just occurred to him when... Boom!

The starlight filling heaven and earth exploded, then withered. Su Yi’s slash advanced with unstoppable force, cleaving through the sky and crushing everything in its path as it hurtled toward Hong Ling.

The look on her beautiful face shifted.

Clang!!!

The Mirror of Mysteries took to the air and shielded her.

In the end, it saved her life, but the sword qi shook it with such force that its wails shook the heavens. It trembled, and it narrowly avoided being sent flying.

Hong Ling suffered a backlash. She coughed up blood and staggered on her feet, almost falling. Her face was deathly pale, her eyes wide with disbelief. He injured me in just one slash? He only just stepped into the Heavenly Fate Realm, but he’s already this unbelievably strong?

The Threelives Buddha’s eyes narrowed as he gazed intently at the Book of Destiny. He could tell that the Book of Destiny had completely suppressed the Mirror of Mysteries!

Suddenly, Su Yi put away his jug of wine. “In my eyes, compared to a true clash of the Grand Dao, your so-called ‘life and death battles’ are indeed no more than childish games.”
