First Immortal of the Sword
Chapter 2975 - The Earthly Fiend Palaces
The Heavenly Monarchs following Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo saw the man reclining amidst the devastation, too. Su Yi!
All of their expressions shifted. They suddenly got the strange sense that they hadn’t come here to hunt Su Yi down, and that he was hunting them instead. It almost looked as if he were waiting for them to cast themselves into his net!
“Something isn’t quite right here,” someone murmured, his brow furrowed.
There’d been a grand battle here, and the ground was still covered in blood and corpses. It was obvious that quite a few Heavenly Monarchs had died.
Yet now, Su Yi sat alone, leisurely and relaxed. That was unquestionable proof that he’d won the earlier battle!
Many of the Heavenly Monarchs couldn’t help but feel solemn. None of them had forgotten that Su Yi had killed Heavenly Monarchs in the battle in the ruins of the Heart-Tempering Sword House.
And if Su Yi weren’t dangerous, there was no way that Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo would have rallied such a large number of Heavenly Monarchs just to hunt him down.
Combined, the experienced, shrewd old-timers among them were instantly on guard. Something wasn’t right here, and that meant they were in danger.
Besides, Su Yi hadn’t just won his most recent battle; he’d deliberately decided to stick around and wait alone on the battlefield. That was fundamentally unusual!
“Don’t tell me... that he’s waiting here for us?” someone whispered.
Many of the others narrowed their eyes. What kind of confidence must he have to just wait for us to come to him?
No matter what, all of the experts following Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo were instantly on guard. They were prepared to face a powerful foe!
“Su Yi, where is Elder Ren Dongshi?” Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo said coldly. He’d long since realized that something strange was happening here, and that he’d come one step too late. Ren Dongshi was most likely already dead.
Over in his wicker chair, Su Yi opened his eyes. He sloshed the wine in his jug and found that not much was left. He planned to drink the last of it when the battle was over.
Then he'd be in the perfect mood to enjoy this fine brew.
Su Yi rose and put away his wicker chair before finally looking at the group of Heavenly Monarchs standing in the distance.
He disregarded Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo’s question, then asked, “Heavenly Sovereign Wen didn’t come with you?”
Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo couldn’t help but laugh. “Who the hell do you think you are? Are you worthy of our founder coming here in person?”
“Oh,” said Su Yi. He continued, entirely unperturbed, “Back in the God Domain, Heavenly Sovereign Wen sent multiple avatars of will to their death. Then, he sent his true body to the battle in the Literati Continent. In light of all that, why do you think I’m unworthy of being a Heavenly Sovereign’s enemy?”
Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo had nothing to say to that. Everything Su Yi said was true! There was no arguing, either.
“Attack together. I have nothing to discuss with you people,” said Su Yi. He raised his right hand into the air.
Proper Conduct transformed into a sword with a resounding clang, then landed in Su Yi’s palm. Its three-foot blade was like clear waters, and it hummed and clanged in his grip.
Cold murderous intent swept across heaven and earth.
The Heavenly Monarchs were stunned. Su Yi was here all alone. They would never have guessed that he’d be so domineering despite being so outnumbered. It was to the point that he disdained to even talk to them, instead challenging them of his own accord.
Their enemy hadn’t just not surrendered; he was boldly fighting back!
Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Wonderful! So long as you don’t run, I’ll accompany you to the very end!”
Su Yi stepped into the air, sleeves billowing around him, and rose into the sky.
“Go!” Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo bellowed, and seventy-two black stone steles shot into the air, then dispersed.
All seventy-two of them were carved with mysterious Daoist palaces. When they assumed their positions, they each transformed into a palace, sealing the entire stretch of heaven and earth off completely.
The Seventy-Two Earth Fiend Palace Steles!
This was one of Limitless Palace’s core formations. Their founder, Heavenly Sovereign Wen, had developed it himself.
The seventy-two palaces were each blanketed in incomparably terrifying murderous intent. When activated, it was as if seventy-two killing formations took effect at once, their combined power mysterious and unfathomable.
The scenery instantly transformed around Su Yi. He was now trapped within the giant seventy-two palace killing formation.
It was like standing in a vast, boundless expanse separate from the outside world. He could no longer sense anything happening beyond the formation.
Meanwhile, outside the formation, Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo commanded, “All of you, help me run the formation!”
A chorus of voices boomed its assent as each of the Heavenly Monarchs took out a black command token and activated it with all their might.
Each token erupted with monstrous divine radiance and shot into the Seventy-Two Earth Fiend Palace Formation.
The formation rumbled and boomed as if it had come to life. Each palace lit up, and all of them emanated dazzling, resplendent energy fluctuations.
Heavenly Sovereign Ling Huo gripped an apricot-yellow pennant, then tapped the air.
Boom!
Within the formation, a mountainous white tiger shot out of one of the grand, towering palaces. A little boy in green rode on its back, carrying a sword.
“Die!” The little boy riding the tiger shot at Su Yi.
The energy fluctuations of all seventy-two formations gathered in the boy’s sword as he attacked.
Su Yi was now trapped in the formation, but he showed no sign of panic. On the contrary, he looked around calmly as he tried to sense something.
But when the boy in green attacked, Su Yi instantly sensed an impending crisis. The boy wasn’t any weaker than the Heavenly Sovereign imprint on the thirteenth floor of the Sword-Testing Tower!
Su Yi was stunned, but he attacked with all his might and clashed with the boy head-on.
This was just a killing formation, yet it was comparable to a Heavenly Sovereign’s imprint. It was immediately obvious how terrifying this was.
In Su Yi’s shoes, most Heavenly Monarchs would have been doomed beyond a doubt.
Booommmm!
The power of the formation clashed with Su Yi’s strike, producing a heaven-shaking impact. Su Yi was forced back, looking utterly wretched.
But when Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo saw this from beyond the formation, he gasped.
As an expert of Limitless Palace, he was naturally keenly aware of the formation’s power. He had no memory of any Heavenly Monarch ever managing to block it.
Yet now, Su Yi had done just that! Was such power really possible for a Silent Realm cultivator?
Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo glowered. That little bastard has got to be using some unknown external power!
As he pondered, his hands formed seals, and he swung the apricot-yellow pennant, working with the thirty-six Heavenly Monarchs to run the formation at maximum strength.
Kaboom!
The formation rumbled and boomed. Firelight interwove, its power increasingly terrifying.
The green-robed boy riding on the white tiger was like the spirit of the formation. He repeatedly swung his sword at Su Yi, stirring up dense, overlapping waves of the formation’s power.
Su Yi no longer tried to block them head-on. Instead, he dodged.
His situation had changed. In the Sword-Testing Tower, he couldn’t use any sort of external power, not even a weapon.
However, here, he had his bamboo sword, Proper Conduct. He could naturally fight back!
That aside, killing formations were ultimately just killing formations. No matter how shifting and adaptable they were, they couldn’t compete with the true imprints of Heavenly Sovereigns.
That was what made it possible for Su Yi to dodge. When, for whatever reason, that wasn’t feasible, he could just swing his sword and cut through it all.
When some of the Heavenly Monarchs saw Su Yi darting about, they couldn’t help but relax. He looked wretched. The way they saw it, so long as they managed to trap Su Yi, they’d be in no danger. They could just fritter away his strength!
However, Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo, the one truly controlling the formation, had an increasingly grim look on his face. There was even a hint of frantic panic in his eyes.
Because he was already circulating the killing formation to its limit, but he still couldn’t take Su Yi down!
That was simply unbelievable.
But at the same time, Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo noticed that Su Yi was already injured. His blue robes were stained red, and his situation was only getting worse.
He couldn’t help but sigh in relief. I just hope we can wear Su Yi down and kill him this way.
Meanwhile, within the killing formation, Su Yi really was in a tough spot. The Seventy-Two Earth Fiend Palace Steles’ power covered every last inch of the area covered by the formation. With the green-robed boy overseeing things, he had little opportunity to dodge.
But none of that shook Su Yi’s heart. He’d been injured, yes, but they were all superficial flesh wounds, not cause for concern.
He was using the Ashes of Spirit Edict to sense the mysteries behind the shifting of the formation. Once he succeeded, he’d be able to break free with ease.
Time slipped by. The Heavenly Monarchs watching from outside the formation were starting to get frantic and impatient. None of them had anticipated that Su Yi would be so stubborn, or this durable.
“Everyone, we cannot wait any longer! Wait for my signal, then activate the formation with all of your might!” bellowed Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo.
He took a deep breath, his silver hair billowing around him. Shocking energy fluctuations rippled off him, all of them flowing into the apricot-yellow formation flag in his grip.
Strange images appeared on its surface, glowing with radiant light.
“Get him!” bellowed Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo.
The thirty-six Heavenly Monarchs were ready and waiting. Now, all of them acted at once, pouring their strength into their medallions.
Heavenly Monarch Ling Huo swung the apricot pennant, then bellowed in a voice like spring thunder, “The Heavenly Seclusion of the Earth Fiends, Absolute Emptiness at the Limits of Divinity!”
Boom—!
The killing formation rumbled and boomed. Seventy-two divine palaces lit up, each erupting with a streak of terrifying, baleful energy.
The boy in green shot off the white tiger’s back and raised his sword. The entire formation practically boiled over as the countless streaks of baleful energy gathered around his sword.
Then, he swung at Su Yi!
This strike was at least twice as powerful as the last one!
Suddenly, Su Yi chuckled, stretched out his finger, and flicked his Dao Sword before shooting higher into the air.
Whoosh!
Countless streaks of sword light surged around his tall, upright frame, condensing into a mystical, unfathomable sword formation over one of the divine palaces.
He then disregarded the green-robed boy’s attack completely, raised his bamboo sword, and thrust at the dome of heaven.
Boom—!
As his sword pierced the dome of heaven, it was like the spark that ignited an explosion, then another, and another. All seventy-two palaces exploded at once.
The resulting destructive power crushed what remained.
It was as if seventy-two volcanoes had gone off in unison, their combined power instantly crushing and collapsing the entire killing formation.
The boy in green and the white tiger couldn’t react in time. Both were instantly crushed, their bodies dissipating into a rain of light.
As for the slash hurtling toward Su Yi? Just as it was about to reach him, it dimmed, then dissipated harmlessly.
